Here is some BC guidance on notching joists https://www.dacorum.gov.uk/docs/default-source/planning-development/22---guidance-note---technical---notching-of-joists-may2011.pdf?Status=Master&sfvrsn=0

I also tried to deal with Styrene.biz. Lots of bounced emails and not much action. What a waste of time. Why have a web site advertising your wares when you don't actually sell the stuff.
-
Just a quick update. Having offfered the firewood on four different web sites, (buy, sell, swop, freecycle, Facebook and the village web site) I've not had a single taker. I've had a home made sign nailed to the gate for a few days and again no takers. So I've started burning it !!

Copper or Aluminium nails for slate?
Triassic replied to Construction Channel's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Our roofer, with 40 years experience, insisted on copper nails for the slates on our cabin roof. They were expensive, but so were the slates. -
Our new cabin is so well insulated it's a lot warmer than we are used to, as a result the root vegetables are going off very quickly. The whole place is the same temperature, so there is nowhere cool, so we were wondering. Where do you keep your?
-
I'd give it a go. My self build neighbour's wife and mother in law sized all the slates and fitted their roof. It took them around three weeks, but saved them thousands.

After a bit of shopping around I've found a local firm who will supply an 8 cubic yard skip for £230 inc vat.
-
I was wondering how much are you paying for skip hire, I've just been quoted £465 for a 16 cubic yard skip ( a builders skip with high sides), sounds a lot to pay for a skip?

The problem I have s we're surrounded by trees. The aerial points down a gap in the trees but there are trees on both sides of the gap. I was thinking about putting it up s very large tree which may get me about the rest. Other than that its chain saw time, fell a couple and trim the rest.

I've moved into the cabin in the garden and at the same time fitted the recommended TV aerial. We are 46 miles from the transmitter, so in rain and snow the picture quality is poor or non existent. On another post someone suggested a mast head booster, but are they any good? I could move the aerial up a very tall tree next to the house, would being heigher up help with reception?

I'm also at the stage of looking for Ali Claud windows and no wanting to pay the Brexit premium was looking for UK manufacturers and came across AJ & D Chapelhow Ltd, http://www.ajdchapelhow.co.uk/. Has anyone used them and if so, got any feedback. According The the blurb on their web site the guy who set the company up was also a cofounder of NorDan.
-
I've sent them the insulation plan a few weeks ago, hopefully I'll get a quote soon.
-
@RichS I used Hilliard Tanner.
-
Not any more, they are £3k higher than the next nearest quote. So having tried the 'insulated foundation system' suppliers and been shocked at the prices £9 to £12k I'm now going to try the more general Insulation suppliers, any suggestions?
-
Thanks for the clarification, clearly ours is a private potable water supply, so no NRV required.
-
I've just replaced a 3/4 inch steel supply main with 32mm plastic. At no point did the water company mention the need for a NRV!

I'm in the middle of demolishing our bungalow, as a result I've asked by a colleague of my wife about the total cost of demolition of a bungalow they've just bought for its plot. Clearly I've no idea as I'm doing mine myself at zero cost, so can anyone give me a clue?

Why the double check non- return valves?

Is Self- Building a viable option for First Time Buyers in London
Triassic replied to MattBetts's topic in Research Resources
I'm not from London so have not filled the questionnaire, however I have a number of friends who live in London and Two of those have contemplated self build, both are millionaires. Id suggest the only option for a first ltime self builder would be to moving far out of London.- 16 replies

Your way will cost you more and be more challenging. Mind you, it'll be an interesting project. You could use polystyrene beads and glue them in place, might be easier and cheaper.

Ok, the cheap option, over stock SIPs panels from here https://www.secondsandco.co.uk/s-i-p-pannels SIP PANEL 142 MM THICK 1.220 wide x between 7.3 and 7.5 m long ---- £175 each

£1700+vat ouch! That's a lot to pay for some hot water. What's wrong with a 9.5kw shower and an under the sink water heater, both for £250 max!

I used this company a few years ago, the Scouts wanted a well insulated bunk room on one of their camp sites. The company provided the panels and volunteers put the kit together. http://www.thesipcompany.com/self-build
