Yup. I hate doors that stick because they are too tight in the frames, 2mm is what I use, plenty of Space for paint .
-
Frankly I prefer plant on door stops, if the door is slightly warped or the frame not perfect, you can plant the door stops to match the door and i always glue them as well.

Frankly after two and a half years of building I am tired of 7 days a week plodding on with the same thing day after day (but overall I am very pleased). Went to a neighbours party tonight and was introduced as “the chap that built that wonderful brick house “ which was really nice to hear. I am looking forward to doing work in my workshop on my classic car and tractor, mechanics rather than building. Spring will see me landscaping and gardening which I look forward too.

With my Kingspan (carrier) ASHP if the pump (external) is set less than 3 out of a max 6 I get a flow error but luckily mine restarts after a bit. Others on this forum have said a good flow rate is essential for an ASHP.

Information overload Ian, hope you enjoy it?. I am just finishing the porch floor ready for Christmas but then again we are in and comfy, just don’t look out the window.

Cement is 3 times more polluting than aviation fuel

Are they similar to GRP wall ties as these are expensive? -

David Attenborough is of the opinion that over population is the greatest threat to this planet. Going back to cement/concrete I have heard the argument that because it can last so long (Romans’ invented it and some of their stuff is still standing). The pollution is relevant to its lifetime so as long as we use it to build stuff that is allowed to remain usable for decades it’s not so bad. I suppose that if a concrete structure is demolished if it is crushed and used as hardcore is saves digging out stone, so still being used? -
My wife is 5ft nothing and she specified no wall cupboards in our new build, the larder top shelf is for little used stuff that she can get me to fetch for her. Frankly it looks nice and uncluttered. We have one corner cupboard that is used for storing little used stuff.

I rang our local council regarding the large amount of plastic, expanded polystyrene etc that we had from our site and explained it was a self build so no trade people involved and asked if I could take it to their recycling/waste transfer station and they informed me “NO” I would have to order a skip and pay for its removal that way. They don’t help you help yourself, no wonder people fly tip. In the end my builder shifted it fir me and was charged trade waste (but it weighed nothing so very little charge, just a pint for my builder)

worst area for building control /planning in UK

Risk assessment = not a cat In hells chance.... simples ? -
Welcome, this forum has given me sooo much quality information from people that have actually done their build, much better than theory. I am a retired builder but have learnt so much in the last few years, ask away and looking forward to hearing your plans.

worst area for building control /planning in UK
joe90 replied to scottishjohn's topic in Building Regulations
A friend had a similar position, he wanted to turn a derelict building into a house, planners wanted a flood risk assessment as it was within two miles of docks. The area had never flooded in living memory. -
Not if the vertical elevation was diagonally braced.

Yes, when bats are not rare and plenty of roosting locally. I agree with @Ferdinand as above. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO BATS ON SITE!
-
We have neighbours who have a flood light at either end of a two story garage that come on with PIRs but because of trees blowing in the wind they come on and off all night which is annoying. Especially when we have no light pollution here.

Very early on when I considered a ground array I planned to use scaffold then the clamps could be loosened, panels jacked up for winter then tightened in place. You could even move it more than twice a year if you wanted to.

Stacking may lead to the sides bulging if they are that heavy (ask @JSHarris how heavy they are ?)
-
I have never found lead easy to cut, many scores will eventually do it, but In situ even harder. My ideal DIY tool would be another pair of hands!.

I looked in our loft (timber and asbestos bungalow to be demolished ready for our build) and could not find anything but they were under the corrugated roofing above the sarking. Trust me you don’t want any bats found on your site!! .

Removing hardstanding up against a 3rd party wall

Nah, lots of slack in my knackered old JCB and a rookie driver (me ??). -
MVHR running properly???
joe90 replied to joe90's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I like the look of the individual room post heaters, frankly with my MVHR off the bedrooms are 2’ warmer and acceptable, so o need to balance my system properly, as cable is fairly cheap, wire for them In case you decide to instal them, if you don’t need them the pin all is good. -
Trouble is, as @recoveringacademic already knows, a lot of this wildlife is not endangered but still treated like they are, developers and builders in the know rid themselves of any nesting areas or actual wildlife before applying for planning. I had to build three bat roosts in my garage roof but we are surrounded my woodland with loads of bats in anyway!!!!
-
@canalsiderenovation have you seen any bats on site? Are you aware of bats in the area?
-
As per @PeterW above, the initial survey has to be done may to sept and no work can start till it’s done AND if bats are found conditions will be imposed which may not be complied with till the following year (if your unlucky like us).

Ask me how I know, I knocked the corner of my brand new garage with my jcb ?
