Air Source Heat Pumps Do Not Work
ToughButterCup replied to SteamyTea's topic in Other Heating Systems
Some people might call such a resource a book, @SteamyTea. Written slightly tongue in cheek, but I agree with you. Static resources : not the thing of the moment are they? Since I am now - at last - the proud of owner of a SunAmp UniQ, your comments about phase change piqued my interest : In the context of SunAmp equipment (Sorry to mention the trade name, I'm not sure whether there are other producers) how do the terms power, temperature and energy relate to phase change materials? And you slip another (for me white noise term) '... specific...' in there. '... Specific energy capacity ...' What might specific energy capacity mean in SunAmp terms? Do we know what the phase change material is in a SunAmp? -

Thank you very much indeed @SteamyTea -

If we wanted to follow your advice, could you please recommend an online resource that would help us read up for ourselves? Thanks . Or maybe a brief explanation from you...? -

There's a conflict of interest that will prevent that. And a powerful one at that. The designer is often the installer. Many threads on BH attest to that. It's the elephant that stalks this discussion board. In plain sight. Absolutely bloody right Dave. -
Radon membrane: I don't think I need one …
ToughButterCup replied to Dreadnaught's topic in Foundations
There's a map of the Radon areas of the UK here. It's self-explanatory : you're either in a Radon area or not. If not - guess what - ya don't need a radon barrier, unless as @Dave Jones says you have a condition specifying you need it. If you do, and if you need a sump ( as we did) nobody came to inspect it, nobody checked that we have an external vent, nobody could give a stuff. Except if you get irradiated by enough Radon, you die early. -
Excellent. There is another new member from Oxford today. You might want to drop him (her) a PM? Actually meeting another self builder is always a real boost. Good luck

In relation to the neighbours issue: 4 years after open hostility from all our neighbours, the issue, such as it was, has gone away . It's not all smiles, but normal civility has broken out. Things will settle down.

Hello from a Oxford based first time self-builder
ToughButterCup replied to BogBeast's topic in Introduce Yourself
Welcome. Used to work in Oxford, which neck of the woods are you hoping to build ? Fings ain't cheap round your way eh? Used ICF for our build. Your approach seems eminentIy sensible. -
Hi, you planning to build in Oxon?

I'm with @joe90 on this one. A simple drip channel (under the top of the upper external lintel) might solve your problem. But the system shouldn't fail just because there isn't a drip channel.....?

Wall plate straps (101)
ToughButterCup replied to MortarThePoint's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Yes, you are right, for us 7.5 concrete screws are perfect. @PeterW reminded me that they should be drilled over-length (10 mm or so) to take account of the dust that you simply cant extract. So for us ( straight into the ICF concrete ) that means a 6mm or maybe 6.5mm SDS hole , bored 110mm ( for a 100mm screw) thats rated 7.5. The grip is fantastic -
Surprised by hip roof trigonometry.

Here's a link to the sections of the Skillbuilder YooChube site which might just help you. I am afraid I didn't understand your problem statement. https://www.youtube.com/c/SkillBuilder/search?query=hip Discussion of hips in our family usually centres on the amounts of Paracetamol and Anti Inflamatory pills taken. -
MDF primer
ToughButterCup replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Another vote from personal experience for Zinser. But, I'm thinking about changing: why....? Here's an expert on the subject - he does much of his work in MDF. And here's the playlist which will give you a really good insight into the hiccups that can occur with things like raised grain and so on. (water-based paint sometimes raises the grain on MDF - just needs a bit of sanding to rectify, that's all.). For another perspective, Alistair Johnson takes you through the paints he uses on built-in furniture (often MDF) and why. Very detailed (order numbers and so on) Ian -
Any good build-related books?

And, in the context of planning, what does ' sustainability ' mean now ? COVID means less trips to the bus stop: no need to walk to some of the shops. Many fewer car journeys. That term - in this context - is in the process of being re-defined.

No. Here's why.... https://youtube.com/c/PeterMillard https://youtube.com/c/FreebirdInteriors Hours and hours of video support not to mention interesting informed opinion.

Hidden cistern toilet frame, thingy
ToughButterCup replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Plumbing
Geberit do loads of floor-fastened pans. They don't make it easy to order them or to sort out what fits with what. So ring them (in the UK) : the tech / help people are very good indeed. Order from reuter.de, much cheaper (or were when we ordered two) Need help with the German - PM me. Ian -
Wall plate straps (101)
ToughButterCup replied to MortarThePoint's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I wouldn't bother but, apart from laziness, can't tell you why I think that. Oh, I know, our chippie says if you don't need to cut something, don't. Very nice man, very very nice man. -
Tell us please what's immediately above stair No. 1. I ask because if it's a corridor maybe that can be nudged : if its a room, then maybe a cuboid shape can be built into the room to accomodate the stairway height clearance. We put a bed on top of such a 'bodge'. Kids loved it. If on the other hand it's a load of plumbing or a window, then ..... ? PS reading Dave's reply, I think I may have misunderstood .... apologies if I have. I cant see why stair 3 is an issue ... it seems like there's plenty of clearance. Cheap glasses?

When I tried to find some online, I couldn't at a sensible price - Lancashire BMs simply don't sell them ( "No call for em mate" : " So my request doesn't count then?" ) Ended up with the Tupperware versions and wish I'd spent the money on the metal ones, even tho' they're stoopid prices.
-
No. I get a discount on some items with two local BMs. As I have come to understand it, there is a commonly held misconception among self builders that they should be able to negociate lower prices because of the volume of money they spend. Mostly ( with the exception of a few serial masochists) self builders are not repeat customers. @BotusBuild : were you to regularly order £1000 of drainage stuf, I'm sure you'd get a discount.

If the data (not programs) on the iPad is iportant to you, then transfer that first - I suggest to a cloud-based account so you can download it later. Then deep (sometimes called Hard, or Factory) reset.
-
Sounds like the problem is on the iPad. Restart, or Soft Reset or Reset (in that order) it to factory settings. Here are the detailed instructions Uninstall as many programs as you can before doing the deep (factory) level Reset.
