Introducing ourselfs - extending updating bungalow
ToughButterCup replied to Bernd's topic in Introduce Yourself
Seeeeexy; cladding porn eh? Either that or fireman's nightmare. .... Get the flame gun out, get it videoed. Ere' 'ow d'ya fireproof the end result then? Oh, welcome.... Ian -
Be careful about waiting. Reading the following remarks, bear in mind that I have no legal qualifications at all. LBAs (Letters Before Action) have to be acted upon within 30 days of submission. Use the correct protocol (not the outdated one) This details the required content, I think the protocol is the one issued in Spring 2015, but Amendments may have been made since I last looked. In general everyone should show that they have tried to keep the issue out of court and have at least tried to use Alternative Dispute Resoulution

Architect Invoice Much Higher than Expected - Options?
ToughButterCup replied to greido's topic in Surveyors & Architects
Look at your Terms of Engagement (might be in an Engagement Letter). As @the_r_sole was hinting above, if the architect is registered and is indeed an architect, then the company will have to follow the sector professional guidelines. Your options should (might) be explained in the Terms of Engagement. -
Ooooooooh ah could crush a grape at the minnit. If there are any Electriq employees reading this, look away now. God I'm cross. Ever had a dishwasher whose door slams shut on your hand? Ever had a dishwasher that has a door tensioner spring that doesn't do anything? Yes, I know that the door facing needs to be fitted to the dishwasher door to balance: but the balance spring adjuster does absolutely nothing. Fully released, the tension is exasctly the same as the factory pre-tensioned setting. The damn door is close to a ballista in performance. And I only have eight fingers left as it is .FFS. Ever had a dishwasher where the after sales service is close to insultingly bad? Ever had a dishwasher manufacturer who can't, won't or just doesn't provide a door-facing kit (to fasten the facing to the appliance front) ? The guy on the phone told me to go a visit a hardware store. Well the Electriq 14 place dishwasher ticks all the boxes. £400 badly spent. Is there such a thing as a generic door-facing attachment kit - dunno what the proper name is - a kit that attaches the kitchen door panel to the front of the dishwasher door thinggy ....

The lack of suspense is killing me (well, nearly)
ToughButterCup replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Lighting
Thanks all for the advice. Very helpful. @PeterW, that's exactly what I was looking for but didn't know what to call it. I do now. Cheers! Ian -
We've been given an early Christmas present of a light for our atrium (well, hallway). There's a 3 meter drop from ceiling apex to where we want the light to be placed. But the light has a solid tube connecting the ceiling fitting to the top of the light - it's about 500mm long. We need to replace that solid fitting with some sort of suspension system. Looking online there's masses of stuff that might do the job: too much to filter through. So I thought I'd ask you all - what have you used to suspend lights below a high ceiling level? Ideally, we'd like to hide the 1.5mm supply cable in the suspension system - and of course it would be brilliant if that system were as invisible as possible. Typical - I want the impossible.

Window fitting starts on Wednesday: Damp steels
ToughButterCup replied to Jilly's topic in Windows & Glazing
@Jilly, consider Zinsser paint for your steels. I suggest it because of the (advertised) 15 year maintenance cycle. Yes, it's very expensive: but over (say) a ten year maintenance period, it's probably worth it. -
Just to clarify: the vent isn't a vent, it's just a wall ornament.... is that what you are saying?

But the ducks move with you: and at 5am they nibble the greenery along the waterline. Soooooooo annoying when your ear is 100mm away.

installing sewage treatment plant with discharge to stream
ToughButterCup replied to Tom's topic in Waste & Sewerage
Yes: one guess, and only one needed ...... -
They did - mostly - prevent it. It was my job in the 1980s Berlin to try to find a way of threading trade through a needle called COCOM. I almost always failed unless we (the company) broke the law. But that apart, the points you make are a perfect example of the need to qualify a sound bite. Its possible to interpret @joe90's quote in several ways - and so to contest it in as many. It can be seen as fallacious - and so unhelpful - or as ' the man in the street ' might interpret it. Arguably , the way the quote was intended. My point is that many people stop thinking when they can latch on to what appears to be an easy dopamine hit. Think Boris. He deals out dopamine in buckets, gets swallowed, and hey presto, the removal van calls.

At last .... Excellent. How is the word business to be understood: process or object? And does the distinction matter in the context of JHJ being quoted - or misquoted ? Arguably, it's the quotation or misquotation of the sound bite / key phrase that is the most important, Rephrasing the quotation to illustrate the sense referred to in your post @Ferdinand; The processes of business (trade) will succeed despite what politicians do. Can that be true? We were prevented from trading with the Eastern Bloc before the Wall came down in 1989. (COCOM) There have been many such interruptions to business processes since. I think that both business processes and business entities (objects) cannot always succeed [despite what politician do] . Because there is ample evidence of both business processes ( 'class' in programming terms) and entites failing regulalry.

Another beautifully simple fallacy promulgated by some who should have known better. Careless, sloppy thinking. Business has to succeed, otherwise it fails. And , failed, is not a business any more. For those of you who are interested in which fallacy it is ( affirmative conclusion from a negative premis) , it's here. With sincere apologies to you @joe90. It's just wrong. Not nasty wrong - just lazy thinking.

Ermmmmmmm, if his house is underground, why does he want walk-on glazing? -
In praise of three companies I love to hate.

Pleased rather than depressed, despite your traumatic experience at the hands of a plumber - you seem to have suffered a similar fate - that you have taken sensible precautions .......... Is this where I depress you in return? My cash was not locked up in a wall anchor until a few minutes ago. -
Google, Geberit and Amazon. Our plumber walked off site with the wall anchors for our DuoFix Sigma frame. Easy thing to do at the end of a hard day's asking me how this that and the other should be fitted - when, learning form last time - I'd put together in a single folder all the Geberit product instructions and diagrams - laminated and easy to access. And references to the key YT vidoes that they produce for the Sigma. I'd even loaded the important video onto my tablet and shown it to him, left it in the bathroom. All he had to do was tap the screen once to open the screen and once again to start the video. Ringing to get him back to give me the part (if he could even find it) would have taken longer than this ..... Geberituk website > services > spare parts > product catalogues > installation and flushing > duofix > frames > accessories > wall anchors > part number Copy, paste the part number into google : available in France, Germany, Netherlands and Amazon. Next day delivery (Saturday). As it happens, the plumber says he will be here on Monday of next week (really?) . Won't be an issue then because I will have fitted it. I don't want it lost again. Just for the Hell of it, I'll ask him where the wall anchor is ...........

This is our architect's site: the clarity about pricing was one reason we decided to use them ....

Lets hope your lad is a medical student then - or has worked his way up from frogs to rabbits, to foxes and sheep .... The job is not easy.
