nod replied to connick159's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating

Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: Lifecycle Cost Comparison (UK)

As with E cars PV A lot of the claims are wildly optimistic You seem to think that HPs will run without serving Most boilers are simply gas checked for the first few years I pay £50 per year It would be a great surprise if when we complete our home we find that the running costs of the HP is less than a gas boiler But the installers I’ve spoken to say it’s unlikely and comparisons are usually made with old inefficient gas boilers We live in a large five bed house and the gas usage figures quoted are miles off ASHPs Are they greener than gas NO Not at the moment Because most of the electricity generated to run them are relying on gas Predicted power cuts due to gas shortages this winter I do wonder if further down the line we will see a similar situation to PV with lots of mis selling court cases Lots of wild claims out there As I’ve already stated If you can get most of the initial cost on a grant Definitely a good thing for you -
Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler: Lifecycle Cost Comparison (UK)
nod replied to Green Power's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
13 years is quite a short period Our last two where in over 20 HPs are more expensive to run than a gas boiler and also can breakdown and will need servicing each year Getting seven k off the price of your HP makes it a no brainer for you We installed a gas boiler in our first build 165m2 on the ground floor and very cheap to run Theres no gas at our next build so a HP is the only option We have been told expect running cost to be about a third higher and initial outlay to be at least treble -
Most roofers don’t get involved with solar You will have to coordinate two separate companies I certainly wouldn’t employ a PV company to do the slating

I use cem-Rock tm Mainly because it comes with an A1 fire cert Not all do Most of our jobs require a fire rating cert At about £25 per sheet Not to pricey

First ever question -- Blocking out of steels???
nod replied to Goody69's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
This is all I did Staggered bolted every 600 Finish the timber flush by either planing or add a piece of ply -
No and No Nothing to pay All included Just keep your eyes open for anything else that they can do while they are there
-
I use 100s of m2 of Marazzi per year and they are very good BUT as a contractor I have very little say in the type or brand The tile is normally in the spec But nearly all Italian tiles are laser cut Some Spanish also Many of the Turkish brands are made at the same factory I normally use Rocia and Al Murad Both are Asian run businesses and pretty typical in that they want to do a deal But showroom prices are high Trade should be about 60% of that CPD have a good range But have a different style to the above and can be like dealing with Howdens Avoid the sheds as they tend to get end of lines in

and Topps 😂

Yes we do But never go metal to metal One reason is strength But the main reason is sound Even the ceiling and wall track should be cut short at the corners 20 mil for single board 40 for double
-
The detail on the internal corner is wrong The board should fly to the end of the stud and the next stud is fastens over it We normally leaves the internal studs loose when first siding Then fixed them on second siding When the plumbers and electricians have finished

What's the consensus on legionella and dhw storage temps
nod replied to SimonD's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
I think there is more chance of a loose brick dropping on your head and killing you than catching Legionnaires -
Italian 1 Spanish 2 Portuguese & Turkish 3 Chinese are rubbish

It doesn’t need mesh and scratch coat It’s worth adding mesh above and below the windows But that can go on with the beads We tend to only use mesh on high suction blocks or roughcast Or if we want to bump the price up Just kidding 😁 So there’s a saving there Probably about a third
-
There’s a bit of sheeting up But far from awkward If it’s concrete block I wouldn’t bother with a scratch coat Looks about a weeks work for a gang
-
It is Put a drawing up of your house and Hopefully your not in London as the price would probably be cheap
-
Most of my site work is around £55 m2 We obviously don’t get involved in scaffolding 150 m2 Should be a week Tops
-
Ask him for a quote without scaffolding Sounds high

Strip footings or insulated raft?
nod replied to Selfbuildnewbie's topic in Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF)
I wouldn’t go for raft unless ground conditions dictated it I’m not sure what the percentages are Probably at least double Most SE seam to spec B&B now -
Definitely Super John Good to have you back Great news that your making a full recovery I was going to say Take it easy But you probably won’t 😁

Most of the housing associations insist on a length of 600 dpc under the Fibre glass Lead is more expensive but far better than fiberglass You can walk up lead also -
