The bin test for tradesman Provide a metal bin in their work area and give them a day's work, telling them they're is a bin for their rubbish etc.. If the bin is empty at the end of the day, they don't get to come back. I will not tolerate people who leave half full cans of Monster everywhere. Zero respect for the client will haunt you.

Why would someone build this here?

Heavens forbid London ever has to change direction.. Same thing will happen. -
Why would someone build this here?
FuerteStu replied to Adsibob's topic in New House & Self Build Design
"why would someone build this here?" Because there is profit in every stage. It doesn't matter if its needed, wanted or objected to.. If someone ticks a box, someone profits. That city is now a busted ol C-max everyone is afraid to turn the key fully off on. Must... Keep... Turning over.. Or we'll never get going again. -
That being said.. He might not have been wrong about the best setup for your house. Just had his own reasons for it. Get more quotes. Be sure of the advice.. Not everyone's right, including me

Things that stood out. His reluctance to believe a house was 3 phase. It shows his tendency to only be installing in 'standard' installs rather than modern or commercial. It shouldn't be something he would be surprised about. He gave you a price, and then a deadline. That's a salesman's technique of wanting you to not think and just handover money. The 'excess straight to immersion' option doesn't factor in the complex variables in modern builds. He's probably used to pushing the add ons for retrofitting older houses. Birds don't worry me. Their nests are seasonal. Rats are a bigger problem and chicken wire does not stop them. Chicken wire is ugly, lazy and cheap

Several things there are alarm bells rather than reassurance. And that comes from someone who was an installer who left the market because of the heavy insistence in sales and profit rather than actual green energy. Get several quotes, get several opinions, then trust your gut.

SHMBO approved..but i'd still like your feedback

To me there looks like a serious lack of storage space. Where will the Xmas Dec's go? Linen closet? I prefer my kitchens to be south facing. Much better to enjoy the sunrise and sunset there than have them glaring through bedroom windows If it were me I'd consider having the living area in a top heavy T shape with the sleeping areas split in two on the north facing sides -
I was the main contractor on mine (garage and loft conversion). I did everything but the scaffolding and gas. I wouldn't recommend it if you can afford to hire someone to do it. The stress and extraordinarily exhausting work is not healthy.

Needed more duck tape. And less beer as a primer

I had a dip about the same size that I think developed from a small void where a doorway used to be. Evidently is soaked through where I'd sealed. What I did was mark out the low area, 'dink' a rim with a cold chisel so there wouldn't be a seam line, then top up with small amount of self leveling making sure it was smooth into the rim I'd formed with a sponge as it began to set.

Before now I did a jedi mind trick of reducing the width of the panels each one by 10mm to gain the 70mm shortage. Wasn't noticeable from either end 😂

California’s Exploding Rooftop Solar Cost Shift
FuerteStu replied to Alan Ambrose's topic in Environmental Building Politics
Rather than relatively expensive microgeneration, wouldn't decentralised storage be a better option? With cheaper alternatives to lithium? https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/03/10/sand-batteries-could-be-key-breakthrough-in-storing-solar-and-wind-energy-year-round#:~:text=The hot air is then, container through a heat exchanger.&text=The sand can store heat,in the district heating network. -
Should we put a sink in the island or against the wall?
FuerteStu replied to CalvinHobbes's topic in General Plumbing
I think it falls more under the category of 'why would you not?' in terms of regulations. The letter of the law is inconsequential if the risk is unnecessarily ignored. Other laws could be used to prosecute if your actions went against guidelines and caused harm. Admittedly, the regulations are bizarre at times. Ceiling pendants being one of those areas. Class 2 but metal lampshade fitted to the bayonet, step down to 0.5 flex but no protection other than the 10A mcb.. On a device that is head height that typically an untrained person sticks you their hand up towards in the dark to change the lamp not knowing if its on or off. But that's besides the point. A socket in the bathroom will be used by every teenage girl for hairdryers and the likes. It's an unnecessary risk. -
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but there is a alarmingly high number of 'needless estimations' and 'accidental prepay metres installed'.. Its almost as if they are benefiting from the additional cashflow

Should we put a sink in the island or against the wall?
FuerteStu replied to CalvinHobbes's topic in General Plumbing
I've seen three island hobs with extraction reliant upon sucking it back into a filter on the island.. All of them end up with a sticky patch on the ceiling where residue condenses. Nice in your designer pad that is hardly ever cooked in, but I've got a family of 5 and we cook six nights a week. Just not realistic to expect it to be practical. -

I've seen people build 'modular' storage from pallets that look pleasing to the eye. 4 boxes that stack on top of each other, self supporting, they distribute the weight as they act like shelving

I prefer my sinks to be window facing so I can gaze regretfully at all the years going by.... -
What's the time?..... 30 seconds later. Oh I prefer these https://amzn.eu/d/hvrXIKF Although I really think we need to be bringing back "two thirds past" Instead of 40 minutes past.. I like confusing Americans

They were small soffet boards and a door from an old boiler. Not big really, but I think there was a minimum charge for collection. I'd imagine your roof would be more than 50kg, but less than 100.. Just a guess though.
-
I would recommend doing it yourself. Very low risk, I did a section of cement board in my house, totalled 22kg and the local authority attached for Biffa to pick it up for £90 so long as it was credible and double wrapped in thick plastic bags.
-
Just finished my stairs and had a similar issue. I ran an 12mm quadrant of trim on top to cover the gap and distract from the square top to Skirting end. Not entirely happy with it, but it looks better than it did and I'm probably the only person that would ever notice

Help designing our home network
FuerteStu replied to MechanicalBuilder's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Under my consumer unit (in a cupboard in the hallway) is a 24 port switch. I've routed twin cat6 cables from there to all TV points, to each corner on the house and several other strategic places. This network has its own WiFi. My ISP plugs into this switch and livens up the outgoing connections, I change my isp, I just change their router and there's zero changes to my home network, no swapping WiFi passwords etc. The only thing I've done different to others is my so called 'turn it off and on again' Radial 240 circuit. Next to my switch. It's a spur that supplies the tactical sockets in places that supply. CCTV, router, switch, doorbell, alarm and WiFi. This way, one switch can reboot the entire house. Which makes it soooo much easier if there are any glitches or issues. -
In this scenario, I'd question if you actually need it to be done on one ring? What's wrong with doing this in a couple of radials? You could commission them as you go, extend them if needed. Much more flexibility and easier for testing. Rings are a hangup from the days when we only had 4 fuses in the board.
