Deflection of 25mm from SE, problem for sliding doors
MikeSharp01 replied to Heather85uk's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
I think the expected deflection is 22.233mm but is still daft across this span. Were they trying to get the depth of the beam the same as the floor if not then cannot see why it can't be deeper? Also although pre cambering will help with the dead load portion it won't deal with the live / imposed load portion. IE it can be straight under the dead load but will then deflect, as calculated, under the worst case imposed load. The imposed load here is, simplistically, 2/3rd of the deflection so I am wondering how it is derived. The imposed point loading @ 22Kn seems quite high, its like having two ton bags of ballast on a point along them beam, we cannot see the rest of the design but so it could be something like another beam, supporting a floor possibly, coming in from the side, but it feels high. Also remember, but perhaps don't try and work with it - IE by saying we are never going to do it, that the imposed load could be based on / derived from you having a crowded dance party in the room above / adjacent to the beam. -
OK will go that way!

I have the tray dead level and most of it works, its just that edge which is wrong. Anyway we are going to ask the tiler to fit this: https://www.showersealsdirect.co.uk/seals/trimlux-pro-23-sealing-trims-23mm-wide-trims.html and go from there.
-
@NickfromwalesOK, can you suggest what to use to tank the tray to the wall, I can coat the wall in hydro ban and tape the joints. Any ideas?

Thanks Nick - trying the gaffer tape test now.

I have been struggling to level our daughters shower tray all day and get tge water to flow away. I have it level both ways but the rim at the end foe about 150mm in the middle is sloping the wrong way - as you can see from the picture, the tray side with the short level is level over the whole distance but a bit up at the end which should help the rim issue. The tiler will be tanking it, I guess to the tray and there is 9mm tiles + 1mm adhesive to go on will that be an effective seal against water pooling against it or do we need to get a new tray?

The longest we had were 7m 300x96 I Joists and we slid them up. I also lifted our ridge beam 8m x 240x320 Kerto assembly with headboard by building a scaffold above it and lifting it on a chain hoist, just got the hoist at the balance point which worked well - managed it all by myself! The picture is the smaller front beam lift but used the same approach on the main beam on the left.

That looks like slate slab it is standing on! How old is the property?

Not sure if the mods don't need to round up the usual suspects, plus some not so usual, and bring this to an / the / your / their end?. Have we none of us got anything better to do with our Saturday evening - nope?

Really disappointed with our worktops...
MikeSharp01 replied to MJNewton's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
Is the island from the same piece of stone as the main runs? If so they may not be able to replace it and get a colour match for the main runs. This may help you argue for a full replacement. When you put the sample piece on the worktop can you see the colour difference? Finally is there anything in the supplier T&Cs that warns of natural materials having colour irregularities? -
Egger Protect - Self Levelling Compound etc
MikeSharp01 replied to DanielShepherd's topic in General Flooring
I supposed they could be glued down - plenty of glues will stick to Egger or screwed down, you will then make up the level with the self leveling above the pipes makes more sense, not sure of the additional weight. You need to check that floor will take it either way you are either putting it above or below the pipe system so might as well put it above. Also watch out for what happens to things if you do level up by the amount you are playing with EG socket heights and etc. -

The difference in thickness will slow the response in the thicker areas but only on the up and down slopes. Once you are running at a constant temp there won't be any noticeable effect and how often do you watch the response on your radiators. -
Is / are his post(s) out there somewhere I was sure he dumped the buffer because of the heat loss. 200 litres of water is a load of buffer when you think the slab must many tons although the water in the UFH will not be many litres. Ours is about 40 litres IIRC.

Its a very odd in that looks to have been 'designed' at the extreme end of possible straight forward operation. I feel that the compromise of having both zones running is going too far. The header thinking from @markocosic is worth a working through on paper but I would have thought - not sure why, that the ufh and / or the radiators would be enough of a buffer. I feel sure @Jeremy Harris designed his system without a header or a buffer tank or perhaps this wine is befuddling me!

Permission refused - not in keeping with the area
MikeSharp01 replied to RichyC's topic in Planning Permission
Is it a scale thing - how does it sit in the street scene, its repose? I think that is what Architects call it. -
Dare we ask what caused it? I expect it was the colour of your eyes.

Looks like poor workpersonship to me.

No - they were not the best on price / service.

We recently ordered our FACRO quad glazed rooflights, made to order, and they arrived in about a month.

Code RED - the end maybe nigh!
MikeSharp01 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Environmental Building Politics
Great food for though here how might we all get out total energy consumption (including supply chains) per head down to that of India while also removing coal, gas and oil from the mix I wonder. -

MikeSharp01 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Environmental Building Politics
Great chart - if you look at it though it gives you some idea just what is developed world and what is not EG energy use in homes must largely be charged against the developed world and could be controlled there. Also the road transport aspect needs a bit more detail as we need to understand it. -

MikeSharp01 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Environmental Building Politics
Warming up nicely - pardon the pun! It seems we have so many different views, very few of which are socially or economically acceptable as things stand so no cohesive leadership on the problem. India has already said it will do nothing about the amount of coal it burns, the clean energy growth will just about keep up with economic growth. The Chinese have broadly said the same thing. However @Carrerahilltake a look at your Bosch kettle and see where it was made - perhaps it is this one: https://www.productfrom.com/product/669843-bosch-twk6004n-electric-kettle but to save looking it up it is Hong Kong! We searched high and low for a UK made kettle last year and did not find one then a European one and failed again, there are a few made in the USA and very many designed in the UK! Perhaps we have to live, for now, with being good at design and awful at manufacturing shipping a few digits in the form of drawings does have an environmental impact but nothing like as much as bringing the putative kettle back from the other side of the world in a big ship burning very nasty oil - nobody is thinking full cost. Either way we miss the point it is all about waste in the end - we needed a new kettle cos the old one failed - irreparable. @Marvin you are correct its all about human factors and the way we choose is all about how we are led, whatever the tinge of the regime. Root cause - poor leadership perhaps. -
Heat Pumps & Hydrogen Powered Boilers Book

Welcome to THE forum for people like us! Once you have the answer perhaps you could tell HMG. PS Will members who submit quotes get credited, if they wish to be, in the book. -
Today has been a depressing day and so I thought I would express my frustration and see how we feel. The 'CODE RED' report from the IPCC (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/downloads/report/IPCC_AR6_WGI_Full_Report.pdf) is not the reason for my depression but rather it brings into sharp (no pun intended) focus the challenges we just are not facing up to and our principal politicians (not leaders because leaders are able to make, explain and garner a following around difficult decisions) seem incapable of facing the facts , developing the options, choosing the path, getting us all aboard and making the changes we clearly need before we incinerate ourselves. Even if you subscribe to the ideas circulated by Nick Bostrum (and many others before and since) that we are living in a simulation - created by a super intelligence to simulate the actions of their forbears, perhaps prior to a subsequent extinction event as one could see it - IE there is nothing watching this simulation any more, it seems that we have found a way of breaking the simulator! Also hoping the super intelligence will offer a simple reboot is perhaps far fetched given that we are just expendable avatars of their forbears and they are watching how the simulation plays out or they are just not watching any more and the simulation just keeps on running in the supercomputer they invented - although a few seconds later they invented a better / faster computer but are / were using it for more important things. So we need to get this fixed or perhaps we don't - discuss!
