Get some insulation on the outside of the beam, as PeterW says, even a thin layer of PU will break the cold bridge relatively effectively.

Interesting, the whole choice of DHW has got no simpler since the advent of buildhub or its predecessor!

But not quite fit and forget as you also need to factor in the cost of the annual safety check and, for a highly insulated home, the heat losses - particularly in the summer!

So what is hard after that? OR is it hard before that?

Welcome to THE forum! Don't think about clauses in contracts as any contractor who does domestic type work won't accept them - it's a scale thing. -
Where is the kWh price heading in 2022?

No not Joking just pointing up a possibility; That we are actually a function of our socialisation and as such we will naturally do a lot of things that we are programmed - by our socialisation, to do. Its called the ideological state apparatus it works to get things done so coercion using the repressive state apparatus does not have to work so hard. So what we, none of us really and including those who proport to 'make the rules', can be certain that the way we are is not already the way 'they' want us to be and have therefore read the books (etc) 'they' (Perhaps better styled 'it') wanted us to. This in turn implies that any individual's stance on any matter is a function of the emotional and intellectual baggage they (we) have accumulated and that baggage forms the foundation for our world view. Leaving it in left luggage is no easy matter but it is possible to work knowing it is there, perhaps by asking 'what is it about the way I got here that is limiting (controlling if you will) my ability to see what is really going on around me'. Luckily, at least from my perspective - all others are available, individuality (diversity might be a better gestalt) is a good thing and in any discourse one needs to increase the strength of one's argument rather than increase the volume with which it is dispersed. Things like the 'death of nuance', 'cancel culture', increased tribalism all, in my view, are contributing to reduced individuality and this may, I feel - I have no evidence, be changing us in ways we might come to regret. Just a thought. PS Sorry, for GESTALT read: "something such as a structure or experience that, when considered as a whole, has qualities that are more than the total of all its parts:" (Cambridge English Dictionary - https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/gestalt 12.03.2022) -

Yes and no - how are you able to confirm that you have not already read the book (or other forms of words / adopted the principles of / etc) they wanted you to read? QED -

Hmmm I admire your general approach - I am always ready to be persuaded of new / alternative directions of thought and am an advocate of holding two opposing ideas in my head and continuing to function. I am forced back on the idea that this may be a faulty definition of power however. Raven and French defined 5 bases of power only one of which is authority. ( @SteamyTea I am fully aware of the term power in reference to any of (P = E/t; P = F·v; P = V·I; P = τ·ω ) As 'these people' are highly visible they often, in my view, make frequent use of the other bases - informational, expert, referent and cohersive. So although they may be limited by the law - where its remit holds, and that not even always then, they have a wide range of tools to achieve their ends which are not so well encompassed by the laws tentacles. -
Makes you wonder what the truth is - is the 2nd law of thermodynamics, well the one about everything tending to chaos, a fraud as well - no this is chaos so it must be true - bugger!

Combi microwave oven? gimmick?
MikeSharp01 replied to Trillip's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
Some manage the microwaves so you don't need a TT.. Our combi (Neff) does everything pretty much, it is slow to heat as an oven, but you can put spoons into the reheat requiring coffee and no sparks and it matches the Neff oven beneath it perfectly. -
Is that a thing? (says he lighting blue touch paper and standing well back.)

They don't want a free for all they want control, they have learned nothing from our recent history around how disruptive TECH can be so the revert to type and its associated defender mentality. -

MikeSharp01 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Yes I assumed you would use all of it so no export, the payback goes up when you export as you won't get 30p for it going out onto the grid even though the same people will charge you 30p to take it from the grid, the whole export model is a busted flush - we need to either move to internal use or dynamic export where your system trades your output in real time but then we will see the eCommerce intermediaries moving into the market ie whole groups of PV owners will be banded together to strengthen their collective hand, if you control a few gW of output you should get a much bigger price - no export without appropriate compensation. In the mean time work to use all of it. -

Assume we get to 30p kWh. A 6kW array should generate say 6300kWh per year (calc based on data HERE) assuming you can use all of it, = £1800 saving per year. 6kW worth of solar panels = £3K (Midsummer wholesale Solar Edge today 08.03.2022) + Inverter (£835 - same source) + bits and self install £1k = £5K / £1800 = 2.7 years - not bad. -

Small 4x4 with trailer as your main mover sound possible? PS looks like a great plot... -
Plus one to that - although our supplier here 'BULB' is one of the failures, perhaps rightly given the problems we have had with our smart meter, cannot be read remotely can't display our dual tariff and they seem not to be bothered (They are prorating our bill based on our 2019 split - which is outrageous given we might have an EV charging over night now and not then) AND worse of all we cannot switch!

Any vapour between the Intello and the PIR can come back into the building as Intello is designed to be humidity variable so if its its damper on the PIR side than in the room the vapour comes back seasonally. Good info and video here: https://proclima.com/products/internal-sealing/intello/how-it-works#sub_navigation

Simple setup with willis heater & 2 zones
MikeSharp01 replied to Buzz11's topic in Underfloor Heating
Welcome to THE forum for people like us! What a deliciously simple setup you have installed and it sounds like the house overall works well. The amount of pipe in slab is quite low, some may say too low but the proof may be in some of the other things you tell us, but again that seems to be working if you can get the temperature up as you describe so all you need now is to get control of it. 1. It does not sound like you need a manifold but, see 4 below, you probably need to check the floor temperatures across the two zones to check they are even. 2. One stat will be fine, NEST is a good system but naturally it comes with the Big TECH downsides of privacy etc. You may need to control the water temperature at the Willis so you don't end up with the water temperature running away. This will control the air temperature - however you may also want / need to control the water temperature / slab temperature. 3. Cannot see a massive need for run on, what would that do or not do once the heat is off nothing will get any warmer. 4. Several things. A. The slab is at the water temperature (I think JS Harris had his at about 23) if that is even then all is well, sort of, you have the Willis water temp stat controlling the slab. B. The water is all flowing round the shortest loop and as it is so short it does not have the contact time to give up its heat to the slab - hence check the slab temps but you may improve things by playing with the pump speed. C. This may then lead to the need for a manifold to balance the two loops. All need you to find out how close the actual slab temperature is to the water temperature you are putting in and how the two zones are balanced (Some balancing might be achieved using the ball valves you have although this would be relatively crude.
