  2. This just shows what I have always thought, there is little point going above 4kW of panels with a 3.68kW inverter unless you have battery storage. Up to 3.68kW it is easy to self use almost all you generate as long as you have a hot water tank and a PV diverter. Beyond that it becomes very hard to self use it all. You then have to do serious sums, the cost of batteries vs the extra that will allow you to self use.

  3. Ah that makes sense. Thanks for explaining @craig

  4. This is a timber frame, but no timber frame specialist involved, I did the sketch myself. I am on a very low budget and have been and will continue to watch as many youtube videos and read as much as possible to learn. Would you say I really should get specialists involved? I wont be having an external masonry skin, just some sort of cladding. The sketch does show a stud wall and OSB sheathing, there is also a lintel/door header which is above the door, but details of the lintel i have yet to finalise (was planning on more in depth research before this part).

  5. Sure! We all know the game, we entered it and I'm not being all sour grapes. I like my system. It's just an interesting phenomenon: us Solar PV producers do our local grids a favour by magically dumping energy into it. No-one contracts us to do it (we're not contracted suppliers) and no-one bothers to pay us... much. So, seeing as there is about a million of us, isn't it rational to try to see if we can get a better deal. That's all. It's not Peterloo or anything.

  6. We must both have been scribbling away and posted almost at the same time! My guestimate aligns quite well with yours, so given the additional installs since 2020 (they've been at an all time high since the spring of this year) I'm confident that there's a good million sources of gratis units winging their way through peoples meters. And being charged for at retail, not wholesale prices.

  7. Just watched the Canterbury episode. I like the suspense of the last few years of GD. You know that COVID lockdown is coming, but they don’t. The timelines with this build did not disappoint. Things went wrong on my build from day 1. You have to embrace all the compromises, perfection is a folly. When the build is finished no one but you knows about all the faults and mistakes.

  8. Add an extra 200mm of mineral wool insulation. Make sure you don’t block the eaves ventilation. Fit an insect mesh along the eaves - if not already fitted. If converting to a warm roof insulate along and below the rafter line and the new ceiling plane but make sure the eaves ventilation is not blocked and that ventilation can travel from eaves to eaves.

  9. Firstly - if the window is at first floor level only and the height of the opening is less than 800mm above the floor level then the glass needs to be safety glass to act as guarding. Secondly - if the window can also open more than 100mm then then window needs guarding so that someone cannot fall out. The solution is simple - fit a non-lockable restrictor stay. Not one with a lock as shown by a previous poster. These do not comply. Fit something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Window-Restrictor-Hook-Safety-Handed/dp/B00D9190BM/ref=asc_df_B00D9190BM/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=214440742293&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10205647162280157693&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007277&hvtargid=pla-421872985378&psc=1

  11. Absolutely, but you will probably end up with cold bridges around a house anyway, door handles is the most common as the handles are metal and the turn bar is one piece of steel. Very few door handle sets are thermally broken

  12. How much are you willing to pay to use the DNOs infrastructure? How much time are you willing to spend administering the flows to your neighbour/s? How much are you willing to pay to enforce non payment of bills? How would you feel if you set up all the above, then your neighbour/s decided to not use your power? Are you willing to pay your taxes on the income? £40/MWh is a pretty good price in my opinion considering you are doing it for next to nothing (read an export meter every now and again and submit readings). If you really want to sell power to customers, via the NG, then become a proper energy supplier and run it as a business. They seem easy enough to set up. 13. Yes the drainage run from the hut to the septic tank will need to be inspected and verified by building control. It will need to meet current regulations and they might insist on a pressure test of the drain run. As part of our build, the spur of drain to the static caravan was tested and inspected by building control.

  14. (expletive deleted)ing autocorrect evens (expletive deleted)s it up when manually changing words. Maillard, 140 to 165°C. Your lucky to have birds, most have died down here, as much as I dislike seagulls, not having them feels odd, shall soon get used to it though.

  15. I have this one and it’s brilliant, Acti fry (with rotating paddle) is a pain. Most used thing in my kitchen. I live on my own and fiancée visits. Just so much quicker and easier for small portions than using the oven

  16. I know nothing about them, are they just a small, hot oven? How do they cope with the Mallard reaction? Do they just become extra kitchen clutter.

  17. we used some armatherm to sit a vertical steel on. Ridiculously expensive for what it is really and will probably make no difference to anything other than my wallet

  18. The trouble is lack of availability. Where can you easily buy this? Is there an actual stockist in the UK? Also, to get this to work it would need to be fitted at the same time as the steels or slipped underneath. Normally I just see the base plates shimmed with steel and filled under with structural grout.

  20. So is that related to HP size? Mine is a small one, only 5kW so is that why it has low coolant charge and does not have a sump heater?

  21. Quite normal, as it that is how they are made. You need ventilation in a 'cold roof' or condensation becomes a problem. You don't seem to have hardly any insulation up there, when was the place built? You can easily increase the amount of insulation, just don't block up the ventilation and make sure any wiring is safe to be covered or relocated.

  22. @CalvinHobbes are you putting in a temporary service as well? Get that done as the same quote as it'll save you fees and another three month wait. That's the way we did it, then they came out, did the disconnection and then I just phoned them a few weeks later once I had th kiosk ready and they came out again.

  26. We're using gypline brackets for a 40mm ceiling. The guys had this room done before I'd finished my morning cup of tea and buildhub browsing.

  27. Why don't you use metal suspended ceilings? I don't see how you could get a flat and straight ceiling with timber. Stick all your services in, then get the metal brackets and edge channels installed at the height required. It's very fast.

  29. Just been to a funeral. Guy whose wife had just died had already buried two other wives. Asked what happened to the first two, "food poisoning" he said. "What happened to this one" I asked. "Broken neck" was his reply. "How did that happen" I asked. "She would not eat her lunch"

  30. No need for marigolds, it’s not poo, get in there it will only be leaves and a bit of crud from the roof, if it has the kitchen sink in it there could be the odd pea or a bit of rice ( don’t eat these)
