How much space for storage & welfare on site? Minimum?
Alexphd1 replied to Dreadnaught's topic in Project & Site Management
For our build secure storage wether on site or off site was biggest priority. We have bought a lot of big ticket stuff off the internet, saved a fortune but take up a lot of space! For the rest of the stuff plastic Slates, wood, velux, garage door etc we have bought from TP and used them as a store. If a velux gets damaged it's better to be damaged in a build merchants than lying 3 months on site!- 21 replies

What do you actually need? We dont have anything on site but we have done 90% of the build ourselves and live less than 10 minutes walk away. any trades we have on site either sit in their vans for tea or go home for lunch.- 21 replies

How to avoid boxy fascia/soffit
Alexphd1 replied to Tin Soldier's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
We are a bit different I like overhangs! But kytun will make any aluminum profile you want in any powder coated RAL colour, not the cheapest but good quick service. -
Another 2p opinon from a tight (£) scotsman. my vote goes for the dewalt (new style), does everything my mates paslode does and more in the cold. Hold value V well. I picked up a new naked (no batttery) for approx £ 185 plus vat. We have used a lot of nails, from sarking to putting together the roof on site and saving £9 for each box adds up! just bought another 5 boxes of firmahold from TCO.

I have attached a drawings of house. I think that looks like painted. Our garage is sandstone from a quarry in montrose, i think that could be a option but would be pretty bulky below the render would need to find a suitable coping material. plot 1 final drawing.pdf

Had the 1st spray render guy out today for a quote. Our house is ICF on a 450mm high passive slab with the DPM coming out between the raft and ICF. I was originaly hoping to have the render all the way down to the ground level, but the render guy told me I needed a bead with DPM coming out. With a stop bead and render both sides it doesnt look good which i agree. He suggested brick slip or painted for the DPM down. Has anybody used anything else for ideas?

"Must Sees" at the NEC Show?
Alexphd1 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Sounds bad but most companies who can afford to exhibit at shows like this are high profit companies. I remember lots of archietects, ufh companies and glazing/window companies. The 4 or 5 questions you asked above are all discussed here already. -

Sorry to say this, I have been to home building & renovation and grand designs show.... I wasted my time. -
I don't want to divert your thread to far away from original post but never really looked at Rockwool, not very practical with thickness for u value. It's a lot less than kingspan like for like u-value. This is a pretty good thread for more info.

Den Home Automation Launching Soon
Alexphd1 replied to Cambs's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
A bit of thinking when wiring goes a long way. When we stuck the tv on wall (years ago) we wired everthing (tv, sound bar, DVD player & sat box) back to one switch beside the door. Go into the room to watch tv, switch everything on and last person leaving switches off when off to bed. Easy. -
@recoveringacademicThis makes life v easy! Much appreciated for the offer but I think I owe more folk on here than deserve. Keep her and crack her open when the beams are in!

I am with steamyT on this. I fail to see the benefit on this for me. Expensive product that will probably create more problems than solutions over the next 30 plus years which I expect my sockets switches etc to last. -
Hello & welcome. Nice looking project. Just throwing in another option... why not a sunamp heated by a gas system boiler? Can size it big enough for the highest demand but only use what you need when just two of you are in with v little heat loss. best of both worlds! lot of options for zones internet controls etc but you need something simple enough for joe public to use... most people i know still dont understand how a TRV operates and even more are not interested. Can i ask why you plan to use the jaga low water radiators, i have not came across them before.

tricky one with the vat hopefully you can tick the boxes to claim both. Your budget is certainly do able, we are doing similar type of figures. Don't underestimate your job, we are researching everything shopping around and doing all the build ourselves..... very time consuming! Think out the box.... we are in the process of buying a graco spray insulation machine to cut cost!

Hi & welcome. Very impressive looking project. I am a big fan of ICF esp nudara and I am planning to use it again on build 2. Budget looks a bight tight remembering I don't think you will be zero vat (maybe wrong). I am sure there will be a few more folk along shortly to say hello.

Yes 32mm string. That would make life v easy, which was the original plan. But a friend/joiner mentioned most likely to crack between the string and plaster.

Prefab. Would have have to dropped from above which is pretty easy but prob damage plaster board somewhere. Would be nice to get stair in and board/tape later.
