  1. Hi Oz, sorry I’m completely lost now? Extension is single storey. 5m out from existing house, 9m wide. Dual pitch roof as mono pitch would be too steep up back of house. Trouble I’m having is keeping it below the bedroom windows above. Been told raised tie truss or steel/glulam beam with rafters are the only options? Thanks
  2. I don’t think a big vaulted ceiling will be possible Oz due to the bedroom windows above. Being a dual pitch is making it difficult to get a nice height internally but still keep it lower than the bedroom windows externally
  3. Thanks, just to clarify if there are ceiling Joists (flat area) then the rafters CAN be joined to the face of the steel rather than on top of the steel?
  4. The architect has only drawn a raised tie truss, but the SE suggested a steel beam cut roof as an alternative. I don’t know what the pros & cons of each are. what I gather it will be slightly vaulted where the rafters go up & then a flat section in the ceiling where the ceiling rafters are
  5. Thanks Russell that’s how i imagined. I see that the rafters can attach inside the face (?) of the beam - is this ok structural wise? If it is okay to fix that way then that would save me a few inches at least where the timber would usually go on top of the beam. I have also been quoted for a glulam beam but it is 200mm deeper than the steel so oz07 are you saying hangers inside the face of the steel that the timber is attached to then rafters? Or just hangers then rafters to the hangers? Sorry not getting what u say about ceiling Joists as ties? Obvuously im not doing any of this! Just trying to guesstimate dimensions without paying ££ every time I have a question for the architect!! How does a steal beam compare to raised tie truss?

  7. Hi all, please excuse my ignorance if this sounds stupid. I’m looking at options for a single storey dual pitch roof (dual as 5m out from house) When constructing a traditional cut roof with a steel beam, is it possible to fix the rafters to the steel itself rather than having a timber on the top? If so, how can the ridge tile be sat then - more timber? Or is there an actual structural reason as to why the rafters are attached to the timber above? Reason for question, I am really really tight on the bedroom windows so every mm counts! But I can’t lower the pitch less due to tiles. also, what is the advantage/disadvantage of using raised tie trusses over a cut roof? Thanks!
  8. Hi, sorry for the very long reply! Still not sorted garage doors. Yeah something traditional timber looking, ideally that can be used electronically as a roller shutter? Thanks
  9. Sorry, did forget to mention edging! Planned to use a decorative edging or possibly timber. Yes i I have digger dumper & whacker on site will do all that myself Quoted £9m2 for the gravel grid system which has a membrane attached to it £55-£70 per tonne for loose tip of gravel from local quarry, most expensive being the Warwick gold, Cotswold cheaper at £55pt sand £20pt which I planned to use just to stable the grid system also recommended by the suppliers type 1 price tbc depending on how many loads I need once dug out thnks in advance
  10. Hi all. About to start the driveway. Going for gravel with the plastic grid system. It's 150m2 so came down to cost as per! Not familiar with the gravel grid but plan to have this build up; Thin top layer of gravel Gravel grid system filled with 14 or 20mm gravel 20mm sharp sand 150-200mm type 1 compacted depending on soil when I dig out membrane - is this necessary & what type? Subgrade anything I've missed? 14 or 20mm gravel? Keen on the Warwick Gold & Cotswold limestone if anyone has used? Cheers
  11. Hi all, after a roller shutter type door but it must look traditional - e.g timber, panelled & ideally with what looks like small glazed windows. any recs? Best match I've found so far is a cedar bake well with glazing but very ££££ that I can't justify!
  12. Hi, newbie here, have trawled this forum for a while (used to be over on ebuild). We are 20 months into our mini grand designs. Little more complicated as we had to build around some of the existing house which was a bland 3 bed 50s box. New extension on side, knocked back half of the house out to just leave 2 up 2 down rooms, & extended that. Took roof off & had complete new roof. Worst part so far has to be living on site in a tourer, the ridiculous amount of steel beams we've had to have (along with crane hire) and it's not technically a new build so liable for all the VAT! best part - seeing the new roof go on & the apex glass window with vaulted ceiling. Fantastic bricky its a true self build. Only get trades in where absolutely necessary cheers
