Out of interest @lizzie what does the Internorm warranty cover ..?? I’ve never seen one that covers glazing units for 25 years - they normally only get 10 - so would be nice to know that some suppliers are putting trust into their glazing systems ..!
-
Is that the installed price..?? Unit is just shy of £2300 plus Vat so thats a lot of fitting cost
-
£650 is about the price for an emergent bat survey. Be warned though - if your planning says desk survey followed by emergent survey, you will need it done between May and September only !

Questions about Waste Transfer, Licenses etc
PeterW replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I was in our local place last week about 7:45pm and there were 3 vans in there - one was a plasterer offloading plaster and board into the skip and sweeping his van out. No-one stopped him at all, which suggests he is known and may have some sort of “arrangement”...... the other was a tipper transit and he definitely knew the people on site and it all looked very “trade” waste ...! The third was a sparky and they were helping him unload the cable offcuts - wonder where that is being weighed in... ? A classic case of playing the rules ..! -

MBC slab pour in north Dorset
PeterW replied to vivienz's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Poker won’t level a slab - it needs to be tamped and probably power floated to get it flat. Self compacting concrete levels itself to a point but you can still make it have an overall “slope” as it’s nowhere near fluid enough to truly level. -
So by my reckoning it’s only taken you 23 weeks to tank the bathroom ..... grouted by Christmas ..??

Having the ability - and tools - to do the job in the first place gives you skills some people don’t have, and then to be able to do the install yourself is again, something many people don’t find themselves capable of doing. There are many people - me included - that sometimes make assumptions about capabilities in others and it’s something we need to be aware of. Not every self builder builds them self...

I get all the questions - and the comments - but given there is a PM involved and they should have PI insurance, that’s the starting point. I also get the point around someone having assets to pursue and I’ve been on both ends of this so understand why it’s a decision point you need to make. Self building is stressful as it is - adding in legal action on top is equally so and sometimes you let it go but other times there is a place for a pointy legal stick...

The contract should be the point where responsibility is assigned and I would have (and have done) no hesitation in going after a PM and ultimately a PMs PI insurer. You have contracted with them to provide a service to you -that is where responsibilities lie. Handing over the cash isn’t the end of the transaction and it’s why retention’s on large value contracts are key. However I would caution that in most (not all) contracts you are not in a position to challenge unless payment has been made in line with the contact due to title and enacting the full contract under English law.

Thanks @lizzie - appreciate that update on what sounds like was a difficult time. Glad you are enjoying the new house though !

And that all came pre-wired, out of the box and plug and play ..? If not, it’s a professional job to install.
-
So you would be better with a WiFi video doorbell.
-
Lizzie had a PM. First port of call would be the PM followed by his PI insurer as he should have picked this up not the client. Irrespective of whether the contractor did his job, buck stops with the P - that’s what you pay them to do. Whilst I also would expect a minimum standard too, it’s about how the situation is resolved by the supplier and from what I understand this was fixed later in the build. As as with anything, research is paramount and I agree that you need to do as much as possible to arm yourself with the facts. As I always say, the only stupid questions are the ones that don’t get asked.
-
TBH unless you are very savvy, I would use WiFi cctv for one or two cameras on a small property as wiring for a true cctv system is a professional job. In any case you need to get power to it - that is what needs planning first ..!

As someone who has been around the industry a while, I don’t think that is the case. Spotting errors in block work can be more difficult as mortar joints can hide all sorts of issues - whilst the human body can sense a 2 degree slope, the human eye cannot identify a 2 degree line out of true. What a number of these posts are illustrating is the importance of project management, and using a PM who has plenty of relevant experience. Trust is great, but it needs to be based on experience and a common understanding.

Do you mean that ..??? Brick and block is much more forgiving as the module dimension is a magnitude smaller than a tf panel.

A run to the tv. A run to where a pc may live A run to where the printer may be A run to where an bedroom tv may be All run from the location of the router / telephone point. This is is a standard house, not a data centre... The bigger issue is most people forget the plug socket next to the telephone entry point and routers need power ... I have a spare reel of cable - when does the sparky need it ..?

WundaTrade is what a lot of us use. Yes, you can get pipe on eBay for 5-10p/m cheaper but with everything from Wunda it all fits as a kit and it’s pretty good stuff. @Nickfromwales prefers a different pump set but have a look at the design of the blending set and see if it suits your needs.

Mine has a huge diamond cup disk and you get very few sparks but lots of dust......

Reservoir Levels rapid Changes
PeterW replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Probably not .... it’s too cheap !! If I used 500 litres a day for a month that is £40 of water to water say £1000 of plants then it’s not costing much at all - and that’s metered water. We have no concept of not opening a tap and water coming out in the UK and tbh I read something last week about the pipe losses accounting for some ridiculous percentage of “usage” in the UK. We haven’t invested in the core reservoir and filtration infrastructure for decades and usage is on the rise and the system can’t cope. We need to stop paying £bn dividends to shareholders and start investing that in the infrastructure ..!- 45 replies

Be very careful with storing pellets - even in bags - in a closed environment such as a garage. There is a carbon monoxide risk from stored pellets and good ventilation is a must.
