That was true @JSHarris when I was doing the specs - the difference only came in when I started to add the laminated or toughened glass and the other factor was the weight of the units affecting what the maximum openers were.

Is Mastercrete too posh for below ground blockwork?
PeterW replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Brick & Block
Factor in losing 15% of the sand to waste as a big unbounded heap ends up everywhere. Does your BM not do it by the bag ..? £5/ton difference is nowt in the big scheme of things and you can keep it covered too -
uPVC 2G vs 3G was a difference of about £450 all in - thats 4/12/4/12/4 from memory but 2 layers of lowE glass

I usually go tubs as the waste - and noise and mess - is much less. From memory its £52 per tub (1/3 cube) delivered -
Welcome..! what were the previous grounds for refusal ..?

Been there... This is one I know intimately, and basically HMRC required sworn affidavits from previous owners that there had never been a vehicle stored "even for 24 hours" in the garage in the past 10 years, and they "may accept" that as evidence... So it was just easier to use non-vat registered suppliers and swallow the VAT hit on materials..!

Help with kitchen renovation/ 1st house.

Be careful with a horizontal as you will have wires coming down the wall. Are you not removing the cabinets first..? -

Hanson MultiCem also comes in plastic bags and isn't Mastercrete prices Use this calculator as a rough guide but 12 bags cement to 1 bag sand and 450 blocks isn't far off. So 25 bags would give need 2 tonnes sand and 900 blocks laid there or thereabouts. -

Whatever you order you want to get it in plastic bags. Cement is cement tbh 5 tonnes is a fair bit - how many blocks are you laying and what mix is specified..?? Admix too..? -
What is the function of a cavity tray at ground DPC?
PeterW replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Foundations
I don't disagree - what I was referring to was taking a cavity batt below ground to infil the cavity instead of using lean mix infil. I think we are discussing the same point ! -
What is the function of a cavity tray at ground DPC?
PeterW replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Foundations
Rockwool state starting 150mm below DPC and the BBA shows a clear air gap below the lower insulation layer before any infil. 150mm would also be just above ground level, anything below that would make it borderline for use anywhere below ground i.e. where weak mortar is normally used. -

Cavity Batts aren’t certified under the BBA cert for below ground use -
Ordering POSIs: how accurately do they need to be measured
PeterW replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Floor Structures
That’s ok as long as the walls are consistent ... or one is flat and the other wavers from this one. I think @recoveringacademic has variation in both walls- 16 replies

Ordering POSIs: how accurately do they need to be measured
PeterW replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Floor Structures
Sorry guys but I disagree about trimming these on site... let me explain why...!! The structural strength in the floor is made up of three components, the joists, the deck and the strongbacks. The strongbacks are either one or two large section timbers that run down the centre of the joists or at pre-determined points through the webs. They attach to blocks that are fitted between the upper and lower chords so they have to be in line or the strongback will not fit...! It must be nailed to the blocks as it stops the twisting moment in the floor joists and creates a "strong back" through the middle of the webs. You also need to work a method of adding the strongback into the joists as 6x2 doesn't tend to bend round corners nicely...- 16 replies

Is there a typo in there and should it say 200mm not 20mm..? Can you send me his drawing / calc as the RSJ should be in line with the brick skin so not sure what he’s drawn

I’ve used 3G uPVC and the noise difference is fantastic. Also the solar gain is less which is important with 2 set of French doors facing south east and the rest of the windows facing south. That sounds a huge amount of glazing though - is it worth a design change to reduce it ..?

PeterW replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Floor Structures
The supplier measures ... they are non-standard units if they are metal web so the supplier should come out and do a site survey and then design to that - they then come with a numbered fitting schedule and a design.- 16 replies

I need to order some footing blocks, what types?
PeterW replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Foundations
Never seen that done ..! I’d want to see the confirmation from Simpson that their tie is designed to be installed in such a way and their BBA certificate supports the installation method.
