Hi all, was watching a 'Building the Dream' and saw this internal door on one episode. was just wondering if anyone knew what the style was and where it could be gotten. I really like the colour and the panel look will reflect the black cladding we're having on the outside of the house.

it's what we're doing as well. ?

New build with basement Essex/London boarder
Thorfun replied to Hyside's topic in Introduce Yourself
our architects referred us to an approved waterproofing specialist who will install the type C waterproofing and guarantee it for 10 years and quite a reasonable cost as far as I'm concerned. for me that warranty is worth it's weight in gold. I could do it myself but I'd be cacking my pants every time it rained. -

Utility connections and road closures advice
Thorfun replied to tomfc's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I am also interested in this and am at the stage of just paying UKPN/Openreach/Water utilities for the new connections. my road closure for UKPN is nearly £2.5k as it's a single track road. Openreach also charge for road closure and I'm waiting on costs from the water company. I am going to do my best to try and get them to all come during the same road closure period so I will hopefully only have to pay for it once! I guess I will then go back to the companies and ask for the refund. but I am fully expecting it to be a major ball ache. I guess it'll be just one of many trials and tribulations of our self-build. -

Does anyone have any experience of Smart aluminium windows?
Thorfun replied to J_Green's topic in Windows & Glazing
I can give you one that I know of...Idealcombi (https://idealcombi.com) are one that we looked at and that some on here have used (use the search function to look for posts on them). the quote we had was very competitive but in the end we decided we wanted alu-clad timber.- 4 replies

looks like a lovely property! the only issue I can see is that you're only getting double glazing whole window U-values for triple glazed windows. that is most likely due to the poor thermal resistance of the aluminium frames and will be a cold bridge if there's no insulation within the frame, which I assume is the case due to the 1.4W/m2K whole window U-value. if you want aluminium frames inside and out then there are other companies that do them that offer insulated frames which will give much better U-values. might be worth shopping around and getting them quoted for supply only and ask your guys to fit them.- 4 replies

good luck! it's great that there will be experiences from members here of multiple different timber frame companies. it will definitely give a broader range of options for future readers. keep us updated with your progress.

Critique my home automation cabinet wiring

@joth I see from the Loxone group that you picked up a couple of those WhiteWing DMX dimmers. I look forward to reading your thoughts on them. -
I'm interested in the responses to this too, so following with interest. ?

welcome. just a word of caution when planning timelines.....we had our planning application approved at the end of May and we've only just finished the building regulations drawings for submission! we have quite a complicated proposed build so that didn't help us but if you're redrawing the plans substantially and need to go through planning approval again and then need the BR drawings done I'm not sure you'll hit your Mar 2021 start date. sorry to sound like a doom-monger but when we started this process a year ago I thought we'd be breaking ground June/July this year. now it looks like it won't be until Feb 21 and the one thing that I've learnt so far is that everything takes a lot longer than you think. best of luck though and I hope you prove me wrong. it sounds an excellent project and I look forward to reading all about it. ?

then I'd better choose compriband then. ?
-
damn. I was thinking of ticking the multiple choice option before posting and now I can't seem to edit it. maybe a friendly admin could do that?

Hi all, interested in hearing peoples opinions on this and thought a poll would be a good way to view the results (although I've not started a poll on here before so I hope it works!). I'm asking as I've been told by our window company that we can choose compriband, silicone or foam with no difference in price so I thought I'd throw it out the to hub to see what you'd choose and maybe you could add a why you'd choose it to fill out the details. all our windows will be taped internally with airtight tape as well so it's just the decision on the seal of the window to the timber frame. thanks, Tom.

welcome! sorry but I can't comment on your plans to offer the advice you seek but it looks like a great build. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to reading about it on here.

good luck with Flight. let us know how you get on.

we found window/door pricing a bit strange tbh, and some companies that some found cheap we found really expensive and vice-versa. for example, for us Rationel were one of the most expensive quotes compared to others but many on here have found Rationel inexpensive. I think with windows and doors it's just a question of getting quotes from many different manufacturers and do your best to compare like for like. which, in itself, is easier said than done! best of luck.

I had a quote from Solo Timber and they made it to my final three shortlist. the other two that made the shortlist were Flight Timber and Timber Frame IT. in the end it came down to a choice between Solo and Flight and Flight won. From looking back at my notes it looks like Solo only supply the VCL if going for their fitted insulation package but their quote did include fitting of roof felt and battens. so the initial quote looked reasonable but when I asked to increase the GF ceiling height to 2.6m, upgrade to attic trusses and add an air tight membrane between the GF and FF those extra costs made them a bit more than Flight. And then we were a lot more impressed with the site visit for Flight Timber and so they got our business. and since we put the deposit down they have been very good with the TF design and communications with the architect and have been generally very impressive for me. we're hoping to break ground in a couple of months so the TF should be erected in April/May (?). But in saying that it was a close call between Solo and Flight. I also think that people are being a bit harsh on MBC. yes, they are more expensive than others but they do what they do very well. they will also guarantee an air tightness value which no other TF company I've spoken to will do. so if you want a turnkey timber frame with insulation already fitted and a guaranteed ACH then the extra MBC pay could well be worth it. if, like me, you want to do the insulation yourselves to save money then MBC will never be able to compete. Plus MBC offer the passive foundations so getting the one company to do both foundations and TF makes sense. if we have more money (or built a smaller house) we'd have chosen MBC without question. but for us it was a choice of bigger house and do more ourselves or smaller house and get someone to do it all. the bigger house won!

fair point. out of interest (although you may not know as you're not in yet) but does the Powerwall cut in quickly enough on a power cut to not cause the electronics to turn off? I've read some say it does and some say it doesn't! what is your experience?
-
Can’t your power wall take over to power this critical stuff?
