I have a foul drain coming up in the corner of my insulated slab. Doing my final checks ready for concreting next week I realised that the pipe coming up out of the floor was too short and once the concrete was laid it did not leave enough room to slide the next coupling onto it. So I found a longer peice of pipe, pulled the short one out of the hole and slid the longer peice into place. Then doubt set in! As the coupling was hidden below the insulation how could I be sure it has stated properly? I shon a tourch down the pipe, but couldn’t see the joint, do what next? I decided the tie a peice of string to my phone and turn the video on and lower it down the pipe, after a bit of trial and error and with the aid of a small tourch tied a few inches about the phone, I had confirmation, the joint was OK. If only I could share the video, it’s a sight to behold.

Some good points made about the need to concrete the tank in place. So to recap...... Concrete the tank in place if you have high groundwater. If you have low or no groundwater then you can simply backfill around the tank with selected backfill material. its good practice to fill the new tank with water as you start to backfill, it helps weight the tank down, even when using concrete as the backfill material. I’ve worked on s couple of jobs where the lads have been rushing at the end of a day, placed the concrete late in the afternoon, not added the water and left site, only to come back in the morning to find that heavy rain overnight has flooded the excavation and the tanks is sat there floating above the concrete

You don't necessarily need to concrete the tank into the hole, you can fill the tank with water as you backfill around it with selected backfill. The weight of the water in the tank keeps it down!

I remember going into my local with a load of mates, the landlord asked what’s the occasion? It was my 18th, I’d already been a regular there for about four years!- 192 replies

What affects the value of a static caravan?
Triassic replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I’d be tempted to build a double garage first and live in that rather than a caravan. -
I thought grout was used to hide any size imperfections? why not simply buy actual mosaic tiles stuck to a flexible backing sheet? Save all that expensive water cutting?

That’s where Sunamp win, it’s available now, is simple to install and relatively cheap.

Ditto. My debbie retires in November. So we like you will be spending more time at home, so it’s probably worth the effort. The other thing I need to consider is the price of slates versus the price of panels, it might be cheaper to fit panels!

Having looked on line I realise there is a bewildering array of options. Is there a checklist of things I should be looking for and what I should steer clear of. The system will be in roof, is there in roof kits to look out for? One last thing, the project designer and all round style guru hates those panels with a silver edge around the panel. If I find panels at a good price with silver edges could I hand paint the silver edge using black paint? PS. Is it worth the effort, or should I save my money?

I’m planning to install a 4kw array of solar panels split between two roofs, one south facing and one west facing. As the FIT is so low I’m planning to install it myself. So the questions are..... Which all black panels are best for the price? As it’s a split system, what sort of inverters do I need? Is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks for all the replies, as I said earlier the quote isn’t broken down yet, I have a site meeting next week with the TF company, I now have a list of questions to ask and some ball park figures against to judge their price. Next question, how much for scaffolding and what Questions to ask of them?

I’m just reviewing the timber frame costs and noted that errection will cost £13,500. There is currently no breakdown of this total. I was wondering is this a competitive prices? How much did others pay for errection.

The hump in the pipe on the right of the photo may be your problem. If there is a h7mp for n the pipe it will hold air and Hannover airlock. As said previously, the pipe should rise all the way back to the tank. If it falls at any point it will airlock.

You also need a paper trail for each load, the last thing you need is for the Local Aurhority or the Environment Agency come knocking at your door because the waste was not disposed of in accordance with the regulations..- 192 replies

The one lesson I’ve learnt is to be very wary of anyone who does not come recommended. Everyone I’ve used recently has been recommended by other self builders and renovators. I also ask tradesmen I’m happy to work with (not had any tradewomen on site yet) who they’d recommend. Most trades have a network of other trades they work with. Round here that network is known as the Lindale crew.- 192 replies

Triassic replied to laurenco's topic in Demolition
+1 @laurenco I like you would have expect the house to be removed completely off site. Not for the cowboy to knock it down, pick out the scrap (at least hundreds, if not over a thousand Pound in value) then ride off into the sunset.- 192 replies

Triassic replied to laurenco's topic in Demolition
Unfortunately we’ve all made this type of mistake, me included, the important thing is to learn the lessons. Not everyone out there is an angel, some are cowboys! Probably the one thing I’ve kearnt over the years is to ask questions of everyone and if you require validation of the answers, come here and ask.- 192 replies

I know you all like photos. So here you are...... We now have internal walls in our basement. its all getting very real, the timber frame comes in seven weeks and I’ve not even ordered the windows, or a scaffold, or roof tiles, or rendering, or ASHP, or ventilation kit, or first fix anything! Time to get my finger out!

Can I get a grant for loft conversion insulation?
Triassic replied to john k's topic in Lofts, Dormers & Loft Conversions
Grants in our area are only available to those on a limited list of benefits and low income. They only cover the flat bit of the ceiling, so room in the roof walls won’t be insulated. I have a friend who is on benefits and low income and even she does not qualify for a grant. -
Wow, I hadn’t realised things were so busy, I’ve just finished my foundations and emailed my selected TF company to get a production date off them. It’ll be interesting to hear what their lead times are?
