  1. The whole smart meter thing has been a complete waste of money. I had an electricity and gas smart meter, they never worked properly, so the meter reader still came every six months. This is well worth a read http://euanmearns.com/uk-smart-meters-a-ghastly-mess-created-by-decc/ Interestingly I've just had the electricity meter replaced and the brand new meter isn’t smart! That’s fine by me! I’d just assumed that if you were an electricity company and you replaced an old meter with a new one, it would be a smart to replace it with a smart meter.
  2. Wow, up here the nests are small, usually golf ball sized at most.
  3. You need to look at the layout for the floor below.
  4. Unfortunately I don’t have a tree free aspect for a ground mount array. I’d got into my head that the roof would be above the tree, but having spent the day observing shadows, I’m not so sure. Maybe I’ll have to wait until the house is up and make further observations of shadows then.
  5. Having made the above bold statement it got me thinking and looking. I’d been thinking along the lines of shadow from the house, chimneys and dormers and such like. Having been in the garden all day I’ve checked and there will shadows from a number of trees, not my trees I hasten to add! So what affect will shadows have on output? Is it even worth fitting panels knowing they will be in dappled sunlight for part of the day?
  6. If it’s hole, low expansion foam.
  7. Just seal the hole, nature will do the rest!
  8. Is this limited to grand children? I mentioned starting a family to the wife but she tells me she’s past it ! However we have god children, some of whom I’d invest in !
  9. Just out of interest, what affect does the ending of the FiT have on the micro generation scheme and ASHP installations?
  10. A few thousand and it’s better in my bank and not some mate of the planners.
  11. I'm having two sets of panels, one set south facing and the other east facing, so probably two inverters. The cable length from the panels to the inverters is around 15 metres. Luckily the panels will be in full sun, no shadows!
  12. The condition tells me where to source the materials from, a monopolistic supply situation. No mention of alternatives.
  13. Quoting EU competition law was my backstop.
  14. Would they even notice if I used the cheaper alternative?
  15. We have a planning condition which stipulated a particular local and very expensive material we should use. I’d like to use a cheaper alternative. How do I go about getting the planning condition changed?
  16. We’ve now sold the old house and have far too much money sat in a bank account, it’s not earning its keep and it’s over the Government guarantee if the bank went bust. So the question is what to do with it? We need some short term and longer term investments. Any low to medium risk suggestions?
  17. Welcome to the fourum. Your neighbour at the end f the lane as done a very nice job on his dry stone wall.
  18. I don’t have a loft space under the panels as it’s a cathedral ceilings. I’m thinking that the best place for the inverters is next to the main electrical fuse board, however this is in the basement and a long way from the panels. Is there any limit on the length of cables from the panels to the inverters?
  19. I rang two local installers yesterday, one didn’t answer the phone but a recorded message said they were fully booked until March next year, the second also said he wasn’t doing quotes or taking on installation work at the moment.
  20. My frame comes in eight weeks and I’m now playing catch up! Could someone explain what is single panel optimisation?
  21. I’m going to insulate a plaster board tent for a good friend of mine, it’s a bedroom in a roof space and is as cold as hell on winter. Ive got a load of second hand fibreglass insulation that was removed from a similar property just prior to demolition. I was going to place this between the studs in the walls and use garden twine to hold it in place. I was wondering if there is any benefit to applying a breathable membrane over the insulation once I have it all in place? I need to keep costs to a minimum as she is as poor as a church mouse, so suggestions for low or no cost options welcome. The room in the room cross section is as follows... roof tiles roofing felt ceiling void space The insulation I’m adding plasterboard. The flat portions of the ceiling are insulated.
  22. I’d pull each duct length into place through the walls and ceiling before cutting. Otherwise cutting them to length first could result in them being too short or too long! Knowing my luck too short!!!
  23. I stopped using B&Q about 18 months ago. I can get cheaper stuff elsewhere. So far today we’ve had 9 internet deliveries !
  24. Maybe they’ll host a Buildhub works trip, I’d come just for the hell of it! Plus I’m actually like to see a Sunamp unit up close and all that.
