I’d be using proper plastic gas pipe, not some rubber hose that could degrade and leak! maybe this will help https://copperplumbing.org.uk/sites/default/files/content_attachments/domestic-gas-installation-testing_0.pdf

Maybe the cheapest and safest option would be to install a gas proof membrane.

I’ve got a situation where the calculations for beams over three 2.4m wide openings have not been done, The architect stated on the drawings these would be designed by the metal web flooring people, they’ve said this is not part of their normal service and the SE says it wasn’t within his original remit, so not covered and would be extras, costing around £200. Im sure I read recently that you can get beam calcs done online at a more reasonable cost? Can someone recommend someone suitable? Also what information is required?

Resolving untraceable, uncapped water supply pipe
Triassic replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Plumbing
If the valve was closed and the end crimped, why bother any further. If it’s stuck out oic the ground and in the way you could dig down and crimp it off lower. -
That was my initial thought when I saw your drawings, where’s the steel reinforcing in the ring beam?

The Build - Stone work commences
Triassic commented on Redoctober's blog entry in Our Journey North of the Border
My wife loves your stonework, around 1/3 of our new build will be stone, so a few questions, who supplied the stone and the corner quoits, how thick I’d the stone ? What you doing above the windows? Does your mason travel? -
I’ve just noticed that there are no door sizes on the architects or building control drawings? Our current cabin accommodation has 30inch wide doors. What size door should i be going for given we are getting older and this is our forever home?

Lintels in a wide cavity situation
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in RSJs, Lintels & Steelwork
@PeterW There will be one block above the lintel and then the timber frame single storey house sits on top of that. Is this what you mean by properly loaded? Ive just found a cross section of the lintel showing the sizes. -
In a situation where you have a wide cavity would you use two separate linters or are there specially designed wide lintels, if so, what am I looking for and where can I order them. Our BM only has concrete lintels or “standard” steel lintels. (His words). The window openings are 2400mm wide and the cavity is around 150 wide. The outer lintel has to have a lip to support a small section of decorative stonework, the TF then sits above this.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the other discussions, very interesting. the one thing my wife highlighted was that the bioethanol fire she looked at had flames of differing heights, giving a more realistic effect?

So my other half has wanted a focal point in our family room since we started this self Build lark, maybe a wood burning stoves of some kind, something good looking and expensive! Me all I want is to get rid of such a daft idea. Anyway, whilst looking on Houzz or some such, she’s come across bioethsnol stoves, a quick search reveals they don’t need a chimney, which is good, but she’s suggesting the one she’s interested in is a couple of grand. Can’t I build my own using a £130 steainkess steel bioethonol container and a nice peice of stone etc? Has as anyone got such a burner and what do they think of them?

The nearest aluminium window company I can find is down south, our plot is in the Lake District, it’s on the Wirral peninsular..

Why are all the window company showrooms down south!?

I need to order some footing blocks, what types?
Triassic replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Foundations
Cheapest I can find is 81p per block -
Shock Horror! we've just been watching one of those building programmes and when it came to plastering they didn't! They used the taper edge boards and just filled along the edges and the screw hole. I'm thinking if I took this approach It would save a wet trade, loads of time and mess. To plaster or not to plaster - Thoughts?

We’ve been looking at windows for the new house, initially we looked at timber with Ali clad exteriors, but the company she chose don’t do a full measure and installation service, so they got binned off. However the she was out and about on Saturday and saw some Aluminium Windows, I’m assuming these will be thermally broken, which she liked a lot. Unfortunately there was no name on the windows I’ve no idea who manufactured them. Has anyone got aluminium windows installed, what do you think of them, who are the manufacturers, do they offer a full measure and nstallation service, would you recommend them, are there any drawbacks in all Ali windows?

Guaranteed to cause a row....
Triassic replied to Jeremy Harris's topic in Electrics - Kitchen & Bathroom
I’m of the fill the cupboard with towels and other stuff brigade, if a surveyor goes into so much detail as to find it give him or her a medal, when we sold our last house the surveyor was with us for all of twenty minutes and most of that was him walking round not looking at anything in particular and asking about comparable. i think you’re worrying too much, when we bought the previous house our surveyor failed to notice that the washing line in the back garden was actually the neighbour’s power supply to his garage. The garages were in pairs, so he’d simply hung the power cable diagonally across one corner of our garden. -

Rest easy In the knowledge you’re not on your own, I’m also half way through digging and laying our foundations and I’ve also made the odd mistake, ours took a day of extra work to sort out. -
CRL underwriter declared bankrupt
Triassic replied to divorcingjack's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
Just found this statement from Alpha - The firm said it has ceased all underwriting of new business, including renewals. A day after the decision, Alpha Insurance general assembly also placed the company into solvent liquidation. “This means that Alpha Insurance from this date will be in run-off,” it said. “The company is solvent, and we, therefore, expect that all present and future obligations will be honoured.” -

I’d also lodge a formal complaint with the loan company? -

Shouldn’t CRL just transfer your policy to another underwriter at no cost to you, what is the FSAs position on this?
