Not sure that’s right, see

Yes my warm loft is only insulated at rafter lever, 400mm rockwall above glued OSB and as @SteamyTea says it works well. I am surprised you only have 1 or 2 degrees temp difference, not sure what your space blanket actually is but multi foil insulation is considered to be snake oil by some but hey if it works. The only MVHR pipes I insulated were the pipes to outside as condensation was forming on the incoming (cold air) pipe in a warm loft. My only comment is if you want your house/loft warmer why not put more rockwall between joists, it’s already fairly airtight so easy peasy. P.S. lovely location.

When planning our build I looked into reed beds fir my treatment plant and contacted a local firm and when I asked him about reed beds he explained they no longer do them as a customer who had one from them got very seriously ill when he cut his finger before clearing some reeds and ended up in hospital for quite some time, his consultant said his “bug” had come from his reed bed. I decided not to bother!

Yes, that is similar to what I did and yes some trap stuff is crap.

What's your biggest DIY calamity?
joe90 replied to Mulberry View's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I did that once when working fir BT, got blown across the room and the customer went mad at me, all his computers went down. All the plaster was also blown off and we could see multiple previous holes drilled (it was a plant room) and every other hole just missed a large cable with no protection on it going across the wall at 45’. After a formal complaint from the customer and my boss being called out the customer was informed that we would not be doing any further work till the electrical installation was “fit for purpose.” . -
What's your biggest DIY calamity?

Almost finished the build and using an angle grinder with a wood carving blade, said angle grinder slipped from my grip (arthritis in said hand) and proceeded to nearly remove my left thumb, oh bugger I thought, quick trip to hospital in ambulance and duly sewed back on. I have limited movement now but mostly useable. (I have photos fir the less Squeamish if required). p.s. I have a reputation fir being careful with power tools, well, used too,!!,! -
I am a convert from copper to plastic but like the look of copper (painted) or chrome pipes when on view.

Possibly interesting book for architects (and self-builders?)

+1. I enjoy learning stuff (but had a head start as I worked as a builder for a few years) and now enjoying the fruits of my labours ? -

United Utilities Water: competent designers?
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Yes, in a former house we had a leak after the meter in the pavement right in the middle of my lawn, Bristol water found the leak, repaired it and waived the large bill (they estimated one from previous months) and advised me to instal a new pipe from meter to house. I was amazed as this pipe was my responsibility!!!, they did however tell me any subsequent leaks would be my responsibility.fair comment . -
I recently had to reduce a lip on my garage floor outside the door which led to rain running back into the garage, I ground off about 5mm to nothing and it worked well. ? I have used it on other places where “lumps”had to be removed.

Above link grinder fits a 4” angle grinder. Surface does not have to be perfect as tile adhesive will level off small imperfections.

Quite controlable if your careful. https://www.screwfix.com/p/segmented-diamond-grinding-cup-125-x-22-2mm/4108v

I think what @Mr Punter is saying is that it looks like the screed rises towards the edge (it certainly looks like that) and suggests grinding it down to be flat with the rest of the floor!

Leaking stop tap: why does it always happen to me?
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Plumbing
I can recommend the squeeze tool, I had a water problem with no stop tap visible (turned out to be buried under the lawn!) and it worked great . As per @ProDave, throw it back to the utilities Co, let us know what they say. Bonkers to not have a stop tap at the boundary!!!. -
I would be sorely tempted if you were not the other end of the country ?

I sooo want a 2 post car lift to rebuild my kit car but know it will only be used fir the one job so can’t justify the cost, guess it’s down to axle stands and crawling under it.

Welcome, another win at appeal, good on you. Don’t forget there is no such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking. Loads of knowledge here and a good bunch to bounce ideas off, bring on the questions!

Not sure you can see from my pic but our kitchen/diner is 4m x 10m and it feels quite big (but there are only two of us mostly) (+ the dog,).
