@Ed Davies I was quoting the above about the caravan remaining after completion only. As per my earlier post, I didn’t ask for permission to put my caravan on site as the original bungalow existed and after it was demolished I told the council it was my builders facilities (tho I did stay In it ?).
-
I would argue that point, caravans are allowed on a residential site and can be used for accommodation as long as it’s not self contained (that means you must come into the house for bathroom facilities or cooking etc) I found this on a caravan website and the info came from a legal beagle. see https://www.inbrief.co.uk/land-law/planning-permission-caravan/

Welcome @Stewpot to THE forum. Yes I should have started at least 30 years ago and I ache all over now!. The main thing I would say is enjoy the build as much as possible, I wanted to do everything but knew this would take forever so i employed a local builder to do the bulk of the heavy work and I did what I enjoyed and knew I could do well, this of course depends on your budget. There is no such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking and getting it wrong, we have all “been there done that”..

Glue / Silicone / Foam Airtightness for Timber/OSB

@Oz07 I have been racking my brain to remember the foam I used and it was the one Peter used as above. -
Not happy with tiling job - or am I being picky?
joe90 replied to sjb1288's topic in Floor Tiles & Tiling
The worst of it??? And you put up with the rest ?. IMO no chance. I could not live with that and being a DIYer I would expect better if I did it myself. As I said before, it’s all in the prep and the floor was not flat. -
OpenReach and flyover rights.

Not required, the cable is fixed to house and walked around to pole and tensioned. Can’t be done if a tall tree exists!. -
OpenReach and flyover rights.

As an ex BT engineer (decades ago!!!) I was stopped from erecting a span to a house over a neighbours garden and the upshot was an additional pole was installed to avoid the “intrusion”. No idea of current policy -

A rubberised paint springs to mind. -

+1, also tiling is like painting, it’s all in the preparation, its got to be flat, I have tried making up with adhesive and got a crap result. -

I would not be happy with that from a “professional”, if I did that as a DIY job, then I would still be a bit miffed. -
I have two thermostats on my DHW tank and I use the upper one for the two of us and switch it to the lower one (greater capacity of DHW ) when we have guests, it’s worked so far.

Help!! Any Solicitors in the house?
joe90 replied to Mulberry View's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Funnily enough I have just lent a “chunk” of money to my stepson to help him buy a house after his split with his partner so he has a decent home for their daughter, against some peoples opinion it’s just an informal loan with no paperwork but I trust him 100%. Life is a gamble and I believe in gut feeling, but I know most people will think I am bonkers. Fastest way to fall out with friends and family is over money issues. -
Glue / Silicone / Foam Airtightness for Timber/OSB
joe90 replied to Oz07's topic in Building Materials
@Oz07 if you want to make the OSB completely airtight just paint it with a non breathable paint ?. -
Glue / Silicone / Foam Airtightness for Timber/OSB
joe90 replied to Oz07's topic in Building Materials
You will need tape etc to seal it up and that’s not cheap. Personally I don’t like membranes and sticky tape even less. As per above, I know OSB is not airtight (unless you coat/paint it) but my airtest was pretty good. I also liked the OSB to give racking strength to the roof. -

Glue / Silicone / Foam Airtightness for Timber/OSB
joe90 replied to Oz07's topic in Building Materials
There was a long thread on another forum about OSB and airtightness, the upshot was ordinary OSB was not completely airtight but it was vapour permeable, some talked about coating the OSB to make it completely airtight, some didn’t. -
I covered the plastic pipe in thin pipe insulation to absorb expansion and stop the wall acting as a heat sink.

We have a dumb waiter........ME things get left on the stairs fir me to shift cuz I am tidy ?

In sentiment I would agree, (as most of us here are self builders intending to stay, which is why we put in the extra effort to get it right!!!!) I know two couples that have “self built” their homes, lived in them fir the minimum requirement then moved on to self build again. It has got them up the housing ladder, are they just “house builders?”

Surely if I built a house (even employing trades) its a self build even if I build it to sell on?

I have done this to avoid pipes coming out of the floor in a cloakroom. Looked good. It was not a service void, I buried the plastic pipe in the wall (protected).

Glue / Silicone / Foam Airtightness for Timber/OSB
joe90 replied to Oz07's topic in Building Materials
As your knicking my idea ?? I used d4 expanding glue, it’s been there about a year and no sign of deterioration. Tip, I lightly sprayed one surface with water (plant mister) and this makes the glue “bubbly” more. -
United Utilities Water: competent designers?
joe90 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Party Wall & Property Legal Issues
Why not cut a small hole in the pipe just after their main connection, call it a split!!! I reported a leak near here after tractors had been over the verge and water was leaking, they were here within hours. If water is escaping they will come out faster. Have a stop cock ready to insert on the boundary so you can install it at the same time. -
Parcels and post are left in my porch, no lock, no letter box, but we are very remote.

This from your original post. It will be difficult to add insulation to the ceiling as this will mean raising the flooring in your storage loft. Insulation does not stop heat loss, it only slows it down so the ceiling insulation is doing no harm. I would add insulation between rafters, either cellotex or rock wool depending on budget or target U value. If using rockwall you will need something to keep it in place. If you use rigid foam it can be fixed in place with expanding foam. The only thing I do not know (and I am sure someone will explain this for you) is a condensation risk from additional insulation.
