  1. friend of mine had auto dip on his car but I noticed that it only dipped after the car coming the other way had been blinded, it cannot see other headlights coming round a bend that a (good) driver would spot and dip before it came into view.!
  2. I am also in a windy location and mounted the vents in the north wall under the eaves, some trees to the North and winds from that direction rare. I am yet to balance the system, we have no heating upstairs apart from towel rads in the bathrooms and not over warm (19’) but comfortable fir sleeping. I prefer to use an electric blanket and decent tog duvet in the cold weather.
  3. I stand corrected ?. I would want a brake pedal!.
  4. yes but with single pedal operation you only have a throttle that operates the brakes when released, in an emergency if you hit that pedal you accelerate surely.??
  5. I am not sure I would like single pedal operation, on my (many) journeys up the M5 I don’t touch any pedals most of the time (cruise control).
  6. Just watched the Merrifield clip above and that made sense to me. The description of Venus and runaway heating was interesting but pleased to hear that we are a long way from that (yet!).
  7. Yes I could understand anything that involves a hammer?
  8. @epsilonGreedy what an elegant description, even I can understand that!!!
  9. But it did everything I wanted it too.........and I can’t find a new one that will.....(I can’t afford a Tesla to resolve my phone issue ?)
  10. ha, my old windows phone did this but it broke recently and the new Motorola replacement phone won’t and according to the web not many phones do nowadays (this is with my old 2008 ICE merc).
  11. what, like a square shafted tool (called a door handle that’s removable) and locked with the key removed?
  12. I think you would get away with locking the door and removing the handle, no chance of accidentally opening it then. All down to your BCO, ours was really good but they are not all like that. You could try it, apply for sign off and if he does not like it ask what he wants. Better than spending money!
  13. cheap as chips to replace!, frankly I consider them a “consumable” (that then get consigned to the garage to drain oil etc in).
  14. Like you I don’t see a problem in doing it but as above if the council noticed/bothered it’s all about the pavement being upgraded. My sister has a drive with no dropped kerb but low cobbles like the picture and they have been using it for the last 30+ years with no bother.
  15. Like you I thought once the “house and it’s contents “ were up to temp they would (mostly) stay that way. I know my wood stove is below room temp but that,s because it has access to outside temps. @SteamyTea will be along in a mo with a scientific reason (again, something I will have to google to try to understand). My original house plan had a north facing larder with cast concrete or stone shelves.
  16. ah, enough said ?
  17. Location also makes a difference, we are in a windy location not far from the sea in a damp environment, @Jeremy Harrisis in a protected hollow so has a warmer micro climate. Not sure how you measure that but it makes a difference.
  18. Seems strange when we have a housing shortage (as long as the plot is big enough?) and the council get more in council tax.
  19. not sure about that, even in our sealed warm roof we got a mouse, he entered the cavity via a brick missing fir an outside tap to be fitted, we heard him scurrying around the cavity (full filled with rockwall), eventually he chewed his way through expanding foam into the loft where I promptly cought him in a trap. We had no food stuffs at all in those area,s. He only got in because I left a brick out fir a week but like @ProDave I think a warm roof is a better idea. Apart from setting traps or having a good mouser (cat) I am not sure what you can do.
  20. What are you doing to them? I think I have only broken one in many years (I did drop a concrete block on it) I always bought cheap and had many of them floating around site. After a tidy up and consolidation of my tools I currently have 10 of them on a shelf above the bench, you can never have too many tape measures.
  21. I think under mounted sinks, Belfast for example, look good with oak worktops but there is the maintenance required. After years of fitting kitchens for other people and fitting all sorts for our build I opted fir laminate and a “cottage” looking porcelain sink. Simple and relatively cheap and easy to clean. I have heard about lots of other surfaces being stainable when people thought they were sealed.
  22. Well, this thread makes me feel a right old dinosaur, apart from power sockets, light switches and switchable 5amp sockets fir table lamps etc I have nothing (apart from a Couple of telephone and tv sockets). One room stat in the hallway and wifi.
  23. I went on several straw bale builds with volunteers and yes enthusiasm was great but the skill is managing who does what as Cpd says above, Most volunteers were unskilled so plenty of humping Bales about for them, chap building the house quickly realised I was a builder and gave me tasks more related to my skill set . My problem was spotting people not doing things right but it was not my build so had to be cautious ?
  24. as an aside I am currently rebuilding the starter motor for my vintage tractor, the part that is broken is a brass connector and non are available (but nearly all parts of the tractor are available!) so I am making the part from a brass bolt, I love this stuff. regarding the above with regard management, I left a well known telecoms business after 33years as management was getting progressively worse, it was a breath of fresh air to be self employed without stupid management decisions getting in the way of my work.
  25. ha, when I installed our sink I hid the plug for the half bowl ?
