  1. This might make my DIY PV instal a Goer, just need confirmation of zero VAT on the kit itself.
  2. +1 to all the above, because we are on clay we run our outlet to a ditch but because it’s dry part of the year it needs to use a rumble drain (this is a perforated pipe buried in drainage stone) between unit and ditch. Our is a Vortex and yes I buried the air pump in the ground to subdue the noise. You don’t need a second pump in my opinion, it’s only the diaphragms that breakdown and I have a spare set in the pump housing ready. The advantage of using a ditch is it saves the cost of burying a drainage field which can clog over the years. Also the Vortex has a collection box at its input, this allows “illegal” items to be collected and not clog up the works. (We had had visitors that have forgotten the rules). Mine has been in three years and not needed emptying yet.
  3. Cool/cold tiled floors is the reason we went LVT in the bathrooms (with electric UFH in the en suite which is rarely used). We have a no shoes policy upstairs (all carpet apart from bathrooms) tiles and Oak flooring downstairs with slippers (mostly). I think it works well.
  4. That’s a problem with dormers through the facia line, many continue the guttering across the dormer, not my favourite but better than what’s there IMO.
  5. 4” single from stove joined to 4” double to go through roof! 🤷‍♂️
  6. Listening to the above i know why I have never been interested in buying a new house 🤷‍♂️
  7. I would only tip someone that went out of their way, not just to do their job! Frankly the same with waiters etc, only the nice ones that make a real effort (and in cash to them, not the “pot”.)
  8. Yes, shit job, I hope you have not paid yet?
  9. I find that odd, my builder did what I told him as I was paying, builders can make suggestions, sure, but they are in your employ surely 🤷‍♂️ Mine is brick, large and floor to ceiling, lots of “thermal mass” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 (sorry)
  10. 👍 make sure you put a grill on it, I got a mouse in my woodstove last winter 😱
  11. Ha, that’s different then, had not come across this before, yes EPS is flammable (Grenfell!) so yes I would duct to outside.
  12. Why the hell not, I would have done this if I had a vented floor void with block and beam. I could understand a timber floor (risk of fire). Mine is vented to an outside wall under an insulated slab.
  13. Most decent bearing suppliers can supply good ones, I once replaced my motorcycle wheel bearings (with decent ones ) for a tenth of the cost of BMW ones. SKF and Timken are the two top bearing manufacturers.
  14. There is a reason it’s being banned (I like wildlife and have a dog!!!)
  15. I tend to use old tins buried in the ground with old beer, they drown happy 🤔
  16. Yes, all available in Screwfix 👍
  17. I always plaster all the way, makes fitting the kitchen units easier, you could always tell the plasterer to make it flat there but not polished!!!
  18. +1 Then make him put it right, there is no way I would accept that, whatever is under that bottom batten needs lowering, water pooling there is unacceptable IMO and a problem waiting to happen (after the builder/roofer has left).
  19. You can hear it when close to it but much quieter than it was.
  20. Right, because I was draining to a ditch that was dry for part of the year a rumble drain was required, this is a perforated pipe laid in drainage stone. The lid of that black box is hinged and the air pump and timer are inside it, very easy to access fir maintenance etc.
  21. Dead easy, dug a hole next to the plant, extended drainage stone below to the rumble drain to stop flooding the unit, installed 2 vent pipes to cool the unit (as directed by the supplier). Put some Astra turf on top and a couple of large rocks, much quieter 👍
  22. Yes I wanted to do this but the DNO insisted on an external duct (can’t remember the proper name 🤷‍♂️) entering their meter box, however I built my meter box onto the rear wall of my garage as I did not want an ugly meter box on my nice cottage, then I ran an armoured cable from garage to house fuse board.
  23. I think you will find we, on this forum, think current regulations are dire which is why most of us instal much more. Who knows where fuel costs are going, the one thing is they will not come down. My build is near passive standards and my heating rarely comes on and the house is very comfortable. I disagree that adding insulation later is easy, far better to plan it from day one.
  24. Welcome, looks a good project and oodles of knowledge here, we never mind questions, even stupid ones, we have all been there, done that. Remember that you only buy insulation once and with the recent price hikes of all fuels the more the merrier along with airtightness. I look forward to your various threads 👍
