Forever (well it will feel like it), try to get it off dry first as it sticks like sh1t when wet and it will go everywhere, then you will end up trying to scrape it off the floor 😱

Appears a good idea but fixed in one direction so only works when wind comes from that direction?

Welcome to THE forum , yes 400 year old will be interesting, lots of knowledge here and we are a friendly bunch (mostly 🤣) whilst the majority here have done (or are doing) new builds I am sure you will gain lots of advice, looking forward to the questions (and photos).

Excess PV to drive heat pump DHW not immersion heater.
joe90 replied to Jwenty's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
This is exactly what I thought of doing, also still diverting excess load (when the ASHP etc are not on) to an immersion to store “energy” in the form of hot water above the temp of the ASHP (48’ in my case) 🤔🤔 -
Yes Zoot , looks great, well done mate.

I am seriously thinking of doing like @ProDave as I have a south facing garage roof at 30’ that will take the panels, as many of you know i don’t do “tech” (Luddite me), but have been wondering if I timed the ASHP to only work between 10 am and 4pm then it will likely use excess lecky if it’s sunny and dump heat into my slab (if the room stat requires it) or the DHW cylinder( if the cylinder stat requires it.) Any excess after that will dump into an immersion in the DHW cylinder. I don’t fancy batteries yet but want to use or store as best I can without them. 🤷♂️

Sorry mate I do not 🤔

How Smooth should new plaster on plasterboard be
joe90 replied to NewToAllOfThis's topic in Plastering & Rendering
I once did some plastering where I polished it like glass, very proud of myself till I tried to paint it, the roller and paint just slid off. I had to sand it all back to give a key 🤷♂️ -
Yes lots of planners don’t like buildings past the front elevation of existing houses, but they do exist, even on new builds. Best to ask (as long as you’re not in a hurry). If you don’t ask you won’t know. Has anyone else done it nearby and set a precedent?

Well it’s got to be a LOT better than it was! Buildings still need to be “breathable” and only airtight if MVHR is Installed. I adopted this attitude with my loft being lined with OSB which some say is not airtight but my air test was pretty good.

Nah, he is just starting, I’ve finished (mostly, thank goodness 🤞)

I did this with my JCB, didn’t cut the cable just folded it tight and the inner core pushed through the insulation which really surprised me with a buried cable, called out the engineers, explained that I, a poor, OAP was trying to build my own house, lots of tea and coffee (and bull shit) and I never got a bill 👍

Appeal Dismissed, challenge it or cut my losses?
joe90 replied to Claire B's topic in Planning Permission
Ah, right, I understand now, very tough call. Or ask the planners what they would accept and go from there. -

Appeal Dismissed, challenge it or cut my losses?
joe90 replied to Claire B's topic in Planning Permission
Eh, not heard of that at all. https://www.gov.uk/appeal-planning-decision and I can not find any indication of a fee if you loose (I was certainly not aware of one if I lost) “There’s no fee for appealing.” -
Appeal Dismissed, challenge it or cut my losses?
joe90 replied to Claire B's topic in Planning Permission
Why great expense?, I did mine myself at no cost!, I found the appeal easier than the planning application!, if you have already employed a planning consultant (which I did for the planning application) I simply copied their work where relevant. -
Appeal Dismissed, challenge it or cut my losses?
joe90 replied to Claire B's topic in Planning Permission
What kind of appeal?, after 4 attempts at planning I appealed to the Secretary of State and they found in my favour saying the planners were not abiding by their own policies (and I have to drive to get anywhere!). -
I agree. I also agree but not always possible within budget. Every little extra insulation/airtightness counts. The first inch of insulation does the most good then it’s diminishing returns so do what you can 👍

How to achieve sound proofing/noise insulation in the house
joe90 replied to Indy's topic in General Construction Issues
This is the only thing i wish I had done on my build, I am a little disappointed in sound transference between floors (downstairs tv can be heard in bedrooms etc) despite good detailing in other respects. -
How did you connect your stove pipe to air supply?
joe90 replied to Adsibob's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
You can always spray the slinky pipe with heat proof black paint or bend a thin piece of sheet metal around it then spray it black! -
How did you connect your stove pipe to air supply?
joe90 replied to Adsibob's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
With mine I had a manifold fabricated locally, 80mm out, 110mm in and a box section vertically between the two, costly, but I was too busy at the time doing everything else, personally I would do the bend(s) in metal to stop heat tracking to the soil pipe (which is what I have under the floor). -
As above, utter tosh, I have a small heat pump and the backup (in case of failure) is an immersion in the buffer tank and another in the DHW tank.
