  1. I disagree Yes, a good example of bad planning but here we are talking about ceiling joists, how are you going to feed non flexible larger diameter MVHR pipes through ceiling joists without leaving a hole in an outside wall 🤷‍♂️ (My I joists allowed 100mm max holes in them and not near the ends.). I used my first floor airing cupboard as a riser to the loft which houses the MVHR.
  2. Where is the kWh price heading in 2022? simples. “Up”. 🤣
  3. I agree BUT, you still cannot feed a stiff (non flexible) pipe through holes in joists. My 110mm drainage pipe had to be installed as the i joists were installed, sooo much easier to use flexible pipe wherever possible.
  4. Usually for warm air heating which needs a lot of air. I also ran all water pipework in plastic (I am a late convert from copper), dead easy to feed through without loads of sharp bends and joins.
  5. I was lucky when self employed, never had a non payer. I did have a doubt about a new customer so declined to quote and found the new builder had to take him to court to get paid, phew!! Nearly all my work was word of mouth which I found the best source of work.
  6. I discounted using larger pipe due to its inflexibility and not being able to feed the pipe through holes between joists 🤔
  7. Blame spell check (I do!!,) 🤣
  8. The other reason for twin wall is to allow the inner skin to heat up more and quicker to create a “draw”, for the occasional use perhaps single skin might do 🤷‍♂️. I like the idea of a scaffold pole to fix it too. 👍
  9. Maybe, but I found i joists cheaper and frankly drilling holes in OSB ( I joist webs) was dead easy.
  10. I agree with everything said but fir heavens sake get your SE to site to check it, if it is wrong and it fails, his insurance won’t be covering it and no insurance can cure injuries or death! This is way too serious to make assumptions.
  11. 🖕 I tend to agree that a hole in the wall, especially under a 6” overhang, will be less problematic than one in the roof!!!
  12. NO, he still has the walk on glazing 🤷‍♂️ 🤣
  13. That’s very impressive, well done 👍
  14. I installed my own and got a local plumber to sign it off, BC didn’t even ask for it when they signed the house off 🤷‍♂️
  15. Come on @SteamyTea, make us a version so we can all make one!!!, good for us in the wet south west eh?
  16. Ha, our building inspector (who was a practical chap) told me I needed to provide a soakaway and I just laughed, explaining that on our solid yellow clay it would just fill up and stay full, currently all rain water from the site went into a ditch at the bottom of the garden so we just directed it there 👍. Result.
  17. I have wondered about this before, my lecky said he mounts stuff between the 450-1200, not centre line in case some jobs worth challenges him!
  18. The mantra on this site is insulation, insulation, insulation, especially with the energy crisis looming. Some here have virtually no heating because their insulation is so good, and you only buy insulation once. My heating comes on a few times fir a couple of months only.
  19. You can make your own using scraps of OSB 👍 Oh shit.
  20. Welcome, they all think that but will (should) be pleased with a well designed/built house 🤷‍♂️, I considered stick build, have a look at “Larsen truss”, less wood and more room for insulation. We welcome all the questions, including stupid ones (we have all been there) and stupid is not asking. A wealth of knowledge here in many different build types. p.s. How can you be an “accidental skydiver”? We’re you pushed? (I am an ex sky diver) 🤣
  21. There is a difference between lowering the tone and basic facts, yours was the latter. 👍
  22. As a slight aside, I often use hardboard to pack a few millimetres. I have never used Fermacell but you could always tape and scrim tapered edge plasterboard (it’s what the yanks do!!!) I have done this a few times and if not perfect the top coat is very easy to sand!
  23. Our treatment plant discharges to a ditch that is wet most of the year (vortex).
  24. Ha, he is new here so will not know our previous discussions on the subject, the thing is we all know what he means!, I just say “heavy” nowadays 👍
