  1. I agree and they are easier to handle 👍.
  2. IMO That’s a whole new roof, those “w” trusses can’t really be altered without massive work, the flat roofed dormer will give you much more room but i agree with you will not look as good as the individual ones, then again, can it be seen much and by whom? i think you’re main problem I’ll be height, with only 2.25m you will loose lots with roof structure and bigger floor joists so may not leave enough head height.
  3. Ha, don’t hold your breath, I have other matters at hand before I can contemplate that one (unfortunately). Luckily my incoming meter is on my workshop where I propose to mount the panels so connecting to the incoming is a Piece of cake and no distance 👍
  4. I just don’t like hollow walls so would not have dot and dab, I had cement render followed by wet plaster finish, this was specced but me after the initial quote from the main contractor and it did not alter the price!!! I can hang anything anywhere with no worries.
  5. Just had an Email from Octopus energy to say my standing charge is doubling soon but prices guaranteed to be £50 below the cap. They also re iterate they are a non profit organisation and have doubled their hardship fund for those struggling to pay. At least they have not gone bust like so many others. Self generating using PV with the price of panels coming down in price is my next project to ponder.
  6. Great reply from our @Gus Potter, well done mate 👍 (I think you may get a few clients here 🤞)
  7. I am a bit late to this thread but I have done quite a few loft conversions and apart from ridge beams have always avoided steels. I like glulam, easy to fix too but larger than steel. I don’t like sistering ceiling/floors joists and prefer additional larger floor joists in between ceiling joists, that way noise is transfered less into the rooms below.
  8. The only thing I have heard is that this is called a “slip plane,” but as you say, no difference to a .DPC.
  9. Having worked on rubble filled walls, how the hell are you going to get the resin all the way to the outer skin and past all the dust and rubble in the middle 🤔
  10. WARNING I will be starting a thread soon on DIY installation of PV!! 🤞
  11. But almost half of the fuel to provide electricity is gas!.
  12. It also depends if you want carpet on the stairs and how the stairs finish at the top, it’s all in the planning.
  13. @saveasteading, is this to tie the wall together?
  14. “According to Moh's Scale of Mineral Hardness, granite is typically a 6-8 on the scale (1 is the softest and 10 is the hardest).”
  15. Good, perhaps consult a specialist in lime and/or period properties!
  16. We went to committee and it was a joke, my wife explained our plan to fit in and the efforts we made, next our neighbour spoke and told lies, which we were not allowed to question, even a committee member I knew was originally on our side would not look me in the eye and they all voted against our proposal. I then went to appeal (myself) and we won hands down, the inspector actually informed the council in the appeal decision that they were not abiding by their own policies. I am not saying all committees are the same but our area had a reputation for being very difficult to deal with. A close neighbour told me it was because I didn’t give them a big enough bribe 😱. It also depends on whether the objections are valid, one neighbour objected on several issues but each one was thrown out by the inspector as invalid.
  17. However Perhaps if they were treated this would not have happened 🤷‍♂️
  18. Kingfisher extreme climate, recommended by my builders, not cheap but I found it very good and easily applied by brush.
  19. Well I did not instal UFH pipes under kitchen cupboards, stairs, toilets, basins shower trays and anything fixed to the floor.
  20. I have treated my west facing (new) brick wall as it catches rain from the Atlantic and the first winter it was saturated , since treatment rain water runs off it like glass and yes it’s breathable.
  21. I have engineered oak flooring with UFH ETC as wood is an insulator then I guess the thinner the better (can’t remember what mine was), mine has been down a few years and still looks new. Are you going to glue it? ( I can’t stand floating floors 🤯).
  22. Here it is. https://web.archive.org/web/20200923193339/http://www.mayfly.eu/
  23. The overhang at the back is to store logs and at the front to stop rain driving in if I have to work with the door open. Also the overhang allowed me to build under permitted development (eaves height) and hide the roller Door mechanism higher to allow vans to get in.
  24. Easy to do with these, it’s what I did, the spec came with the roof trusses, although I have a 700mm overhang both sides of my garage and live in an exposed site close to the Atlantic these latest storms failed to move it 👍 https://www.screwfix.com/p/sabrefix-heavy-duty-restraint-straps-10-pack/74769
  25. I don’t see why, only a small “hole” in the inner skin filled with the hanger, steel unlike timber won’t shrink with age , the hangers don’t even go right through the blockwork 🤷‍♂️. Again I don’t see why, springy floors are caused by flex with the joist.
