  1. Thanks Dave James Hardie to quality cladding they do a vertical cladding that’s looks amazing but it’s not available in the UK .
  2. As we wait for our planning content to come through via Flemings we exploring finishes on the external walls thinking of mixing cladding possibly fibre cement or a new cladding board and batting from Millboard. The Millboard is super light weight stuff considering it's 20 to 25mm thick comes in at £130 including vat per sqm 😱. Drawing of build below Does anyone have pictures of using brick slips and cladding they would like to share
  3. not sure of the amount of sun light but on the windows we talking with a window manufacture in The Netherlands who product glass that helps solve the loss of heat during the winter due to reflecting glass capabilities so we hope to control over heating and heat loss also by installing a air circulation unit thats temperature controlled. We have a problem with over heating in our current house with 2 large windows facing south one in the lounge other in the bedroom above. Its a timber frame build house by Laing back in the late 80s 3 bedroom in the winter downstairs used to be warm and really cold upstairs since we installed an air circulation system a few years back it now keeps both levels warm and really helps in the summer keeping it from over heating. Before installing the air circulation system if could become unbearable in the livingroom with the south facing window your would have a sorehead in no time with the heat.
  4. @recoveringbuilder aye it's windy alright we planning to live in the canary islands for most of the winter months or possible 2 or 3 months at a time watch out for the build starting drop bye say hello.
  5. Hi Johnmo, we going with Fleming homes with upgrade installation and we have finalised the internal floor space 110sqm ground floor does have vaulted ceiling half of the house and useable loft space on the other half, interesting on the use of thermostat Johnston Jgas was explaining the same to use the other day
  6. Hi Jilly, after researching the last few days we have decided on LPG after a chat with Worcester Bosch very helpful team who had taken us through all the options including ASHP and LPG. Flemings are producing our kit with the upgraded installation under floor heating to a concrete floor finish. The second floor loft space of the house has a large single room which we going to use infrared heating panels the house faces south with 4 large floor to ceiling sliding doors to maximise the solar gain. Like you I think the upfront cost has pushed us towards LPG.
  7. Hi Jack thanks for the interesting reply nothing negative about it at all, the family member who installs heat pumps by the size of business which is not just hear pumps but also includes commercial FM , house building and installs and maintenance of commercial fridge and freezers to supermarkets. Not sure of the property types for housing associations but he’s does install for a few national house builders . On infrared heat panels running on solar power don’t think you could run 100% on them but with good battery storage some people are getting over 60% on solar during winter but does drop to 20% on really bad days. Have meet a few guys on the Shetland islands running their house and EV on solar 100% in the summer and down to 20% in the winter but they have invested heavily in the solar collection and storage.
  8. Have been researching alternatives sources of heating our self-build which is off grid for natural gas. We started looking at air sources heat pumps and asked a closed family member who sells and installs air source heat pumps to housing associations and he said no I would not sell one to my worst enemy you will hate me if I do and stated why. Hes direct us towards LPG gas that can operate using a mix of hydrogen and LPG gas said it’s the future for gas heating once it’s approved as worcester bosch are trailing. He also pointed us towards infrared heating panels he’s carried out a few installs that run off solar and works well in Sip homes and passive builds. Has anyone had experience of this heating in their self build and would like to share
  9. Oh thanks @recoveringbuilder if possible could you share contact details for both as I have tried to reach out to both of them and ended up being past around door to door Scottish Water total nightmare
  10. Don’t use drain chemicals they burn the rubber seals on joints and seen it melting pipes several times in the past, also if you get a splash back it will burn through burn into skin through clothing. Have 20 years experience running my own cleaning clearing and repair business just hate the stuff should be banned from selling the stuff.
  11. Hi it’s south Lanarkshire I do have a other plot in West Lothian just sold it
  12. Big thanks for providing this post and link saved us thousands as our solicitor was demanding we paid the tax on our plot until I sent them the link you provided. thank you
  13. We managed to secure a plot for our self build and getting down to design but cant decided on a single single storey bungalow 100sqm or a 1 and half story with a foot print of 75sqm not sure which would be the more expense and input on this would help please. The plot has a slight slope having this investigated Looking for input if anyone can
  14. I have used a guy called George McKee's He out in Livingston has been installing windows for over 20 years he’s done a fair bit of work for me last job solid oak flooring and doors with skirting look him up George McKee s and son
  15. Hope someone can help point me in the right direction, we are at the point of narrowing our choice of the 2 plots on offer. Our preference has services nearby we have been told also the plot next to this one has just completed building other plots have been completed over the last few years. The plot has full planning permission granted and we would submit a new design and layout. What is the best method to establish the location of the services in the South Lanarkshire Council area? Would it be best to have a GeoSurvey carried out? Have experience dealing with Scottish Water which is a total nightmare. Have access to free use of a CCTV drainage camera and CAT & Genny if this helps.
