Dry Hip and Dry Ridge problem on new build
Russell griffiths replied to Tomfromsurrey's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Nope, not comparing rolls Royce to Chevrolet comparing a new car with a new car, not a second hand one if You paid £10,000 for a car or £50,000 you would expect it to come without faults, the engine might not be as smooth as the £50,000 one but you would expect the doors to fit and the boot to shut properly. The original poster must have noticed the faults as he posted the pictures up ??♂️ -
Dry Hip and Dry Ridge problem on new build

Nope, a house is the biggest investment you will make in your life ( probably) most people spend more time looking at a new car than they do a new house. If you compared that house to a car you would be walking around it seeing that the door doesn’t shut properly, the sunroof leaks. Why would you put up with glaringly obvious faults. -
Just starting out! Two storey extension
Russell griffiths replied to RoseD's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
Have any of your neighbours done similar stuff, have a walk around and be nosey. Knock on a few doors and say, I love your extension, this normally gets people on your side and there only to happy to show you. On a different note, have you thought of moving. Putting £150 grand into a house might get you another rung up the ladder if you move or a better neighbourhood -

Not sure what you mean by turning an external wall into internal, you would normally just plaster over the bricks so it becomes internal. You dont sort of take half half of it down to make it thinner, it stays there as it’s holding the roof up, you just hide it. -
I’m looking for a trim @nod that I want to put on the edge of the boards that go into a window reveal. I want to thin skim the reveal but want a clean line against the windows, not a plastered line that will crack and require caulking. Hunting around and just just looking for recommendations. Cheers.

Dry Hip and Dry Ridge problem on new build

I don’t think it’s amateur builder, I think it shows a rushed cock up, so what else is hiding, missed insulation, forgotten cavity trays. The list could be endless. -
Dry Hip and Dry Ridge problem on new build

@Tomfromsurrey Better to walk away ready to fight another day. Imagine what is lurking underneath if that roof is what’s on show. I put a deposit on a plot and walked away when things didn’t add up, lost loads, don’t worry move on. -
Table saw, but make yourself an 8x4 table drop a sheet of ply over the table and then make some legs up for it. You can then screw a timber down as a long fence for cutting multiple cuts. Forget the extraction and set up a leaf blower pointing directly at the blade, any dust extraction gets blocked quickly, better to blow it away from you. Sod the neighbours.

Floorboard quotes - what am I missing?
Russell griffiths replied to AlanUK's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
Then it’s a no brainier really one of the protected chipboard floors, all glued and screwed, get it 99% finished and then a nice engineered wood board on top. Gives you the chance to change colour scheme, and also if your budget gets tight towards the end you can wait a while and fit the finish floor later, just leave the skirting off. -

Why is the porch roof not running in line with the garage roof. Walk away, will be a valuable life lesson. -
Connecting-up my empty meter box…
Russell griffiths replied to Dreadnaught's topic in Consumer Units, RCDs, MCBOs
They are built in flush face type boxes look like ours, but metal with a metal door with a couple of rows of louvers. Seems like an easily achievable solution. -

Is this going in a finished house or are you building new. If it’s new won’t it get messed up with the rest of the build. Better to put down chipboard and put the finishfloor on top. -
Should this have been included in the price?
Russell griffiths replied to Jimbo37's topic in Costing & Estimating
If it doesn’t state what it is to be the coating how would he know how to price it. You might want to coat it in gold leaf. Sorry not included in my opinion.- 11 replies

I’m unsure why nobody does what we had in Australia. You mark out the house footprint and get the recessed box installed in the correct location but fixed in place on two posts, dno installed the meter, as the brickies bring up the brickwork they remove the wooden posts and build the box in, there is enough movement in the cable to wiggle the box to get it to line up with the brickwork. ?♂️?♂️?♂️?♂️ -
Every day of my working life I’ve been on price work, so I’m always looking for efficient methods.
-
Oh didn’t know that, buggers aren’t they.
-
Because, if you carry them up a staircase and into a tight room, you then have to spin around in the room to get them oriented the correct way around. If the tongue was multi directional you could carry in and drop straight down. If cutting to length outside the room you need to make sure you cut the correct end off. It just seems that it’s another system that nobody questions, so it’s not been looked at, we just get on with it. I question everything in life looking for improvement.
-
Yes. Why??
-
There’s a lad in nailsworth who built with nudura, he sized his openings to match the width and height of the blocks, he had very little waste, also look at the length of walls, i resized all my wall length to 50mm increments as this is a cut point on the blocks I used.
-
Tell me what is the reason for the chipboard flooring to have an uneven tongue and groove on it. It just seams like an over complicated system that each sheet has to be the correct way up. Why, not a joint so a sheet can be laid either way up and any way around. Now or I know this is possible as the stuff in oz and America has a removable tongue that you tap in so you don’t have to trim off the tongue if fitting against an edge. Just seams like an overly complicated system for no reason.

There’s no sharp sand in that mix of yours. You can try fine sharp 2mm or less or Leighton buzzard. Have a trip around all the local merchants and buy half a dozen bags and just have a play.
-
Have you looked at Stroud, few plots popping up there. your garden ideas would fit in there.
-
Your cold bridging should have been minimised with your design and insulation, plasterboard is really just a decorative finish.

I would walk away, looking at the brickwork on the gable, if that’s what you can see imagine how crap the bits are you cannot see.
