  1. The beggings of three stable doors, tenons cut and window frames made now time to cut all the mortises and then see how well it all fits together, no major problems so far except when i was cleaning the tenons i got distracted my my young boy and then slamed a very shart chisel into my finger.... luckily no tendon damage but a deep cut to the bone. Rest it they said...... the windows are all slightly different sizes as they are all free bees from one of my benefactors !
  2. I can relate as the house i live in has virtually no insulation and the electricity cost per year is barbaric (£2000+) i had hoped to have gotten round to this house but got carried away on the cottage next door and due to a prolonged health issue it got delayed but the electric bills did not...... having found this forum i am completely sold on the idea of “insulate, air tight and ventilate” being a key mantra. Its been said so many times that unless you are either doing the work yourself or are on site all the time and know what to look out for then the “devil in the detail” is easily overlooked and then covered over and forgotten about.... until the gas / leccy bill come in or some such thing. Hope that when you get it all fixed up you see a really good improvement.
  3. Welcome and another very useful addition of skilled knowledge willing to help on what is an amazing resource for self builders And the like.
  4. Great job mate, a word if caution though..... i would not make it available on the net until you are 100% sure that its at a point where there is no outstanding reasons for guests to give you anything but a bloody good review. Your first reviews are there to stay so you want them to be good. List it on the sites but have the opening date set for when your 100% sure the important jobs will be done. Dont leave anything to chance like assuming the new wifi router will be delivered on time........ be honest in your description and your guests will be very forgiving. Gloss over something and they will drop a bombshell that's going to leave you really annoyed. It looks great and well done, i am sure it will be a big hit and bookings will flood in. Good luck.
  5. I get a lot if support from really random people on a regular basis , it bolsters ones dull hope for humanity when you are on the positive end of others good will.
  6. Its the absolute pits man, i will be so glad when i am done with this stuff..... if i could have foreseen how horrid using this stuff was before i got commited i would have definatly gone another way. I always wear a propper PPE but its still hell.

  9. One roll and i can get someone to pick it up. Hands off bad boy !

  11. Yup thats a great way to make an expensive peice of quality hardware look like shite. Hope you get it fixed up.
  12. Great looking job, and a lovely spot. Well done !
  13. That realy is something ! Just love the curve. These are a set i built a few years ago, would go well in your garden.
  14. Very similar to what i did but i only had one plank width to share with my piles of slate....... lovely looking house.
  15. Agree, i made mine out of wood and heavy galvanised tie down strip, worked great. These look like a lot less work.
  16. I have too many old door..... always getten given new blanks for free from the builders merchants as when people buy a good door it comes with a new blank on top to protect it...... go figure. The openings are all quite wide 870mm so i will have to have a dig round the shed to see what ive got but am pretty set on the idea if making the doors myself from scrap materials. I have all new seels and latches so no compromise there. Have various old brass door nobs. Its just a bit of fun and a way of learning a few new tricks.
  17. Three door frames all made from wood on its third tour of duty, will need to cut a few blocks to fill the holes from its previous lives. Next doors.....
  18. Wont your digger lift most things ? If i had a decent digger and a dumper i would be unstoppable. I am delaying so many jobs as i dont have a digger and due to location hiring one on an ad hoc basis is just to expensive. Been offered the loan of one at the end of summer so will have all the jobs lined up and just hire a dumper and grab a sidekick to drive that while i go crazzy on the digger.
  19. I also treat my refurb as a day job, on the tools 8am sharp, 10 min tea break at 11.30 and a one hour lunch at 1pm then another tea brake at 3.30pm and tools DOWN at 5pm. Weekends are for doing stuff i really Want to do. I find i am most motivated when working with others, i have volunteers around most of the time and though they can be work in themselves i do find that its so much easier to smash out a few big gnarly jobs if you have one or two young keen sidekicks riding shotgun. I also cannot even start to think about my day without a really big cooked breakfast, a decent healthy lunch and a feast at night. Gave up alcohol seven months ago as well as refined sugar, dairy and high carb food which has been great for my health and mind. I wake up every morning champing at the bit to get out there and build, i have to force myself to stop at all the designated times.... but thats the trick.
  20. Try us islanders, the delver man sends parcels over only on Saturdays......
  21. I repaired my old landrovers diesel fuel tank with CT1 ...... worked great ! And was still working months later when i got round to putting the new tank on. Crazzy stuff.
  22. Decided to start by replacing the three doors on my shed, i hope by the time they are done i will be competentat at door and door frame building and be ready to build the cottage doors. I had some donated hardwood that i have decided to cut and join to make the cills. I need to research a really bomb proof paint system for the cills as they will get a lot of wear. I could cover them in aluminium as i have a whole bunch old velux flashings free from the hardware but think i want to save that stuff for the cottage. Any ideas on the paint system ? Have got all the various seals and hinges so just a matter of working slowly through it all. Next are three frames and then three stable doors.....
  23. Yes i drilled all the holes and hand nailed everything as i dont have a nail gun, only one line of nails per board in my case to prevent splitting as the timber dried.
  24. Thanks, love building stuff.......
