  1. This is the way I will go….
  2. Part of my workshop when it was tidy 😎 OSB against the wall with screws in….
  3. Good shout out, I needed a new secondary drill as i have a massive property and it can be guaranteed that when you need the drill someone is using it at the far end of nowhere…… wasted far to long wandering round looking for the only cordless drill…. And two more batteries to boot. Not sure about the charger as I have two already…..
  4. I guess your going to be constrained by the SE but what about filling the trench with stone as you have suggested and then trying to acquire some large cut stones to lay dry on top of this instead of blocks, when I built a road in Australia I used over one ton sandstone blocks purchased from a local quarry, they worked out very cheap for what they were and will be there is a few thousand years. Tightly fitted they will go nowhere and if absolutely necessary you can join them in the middle with stainless steel rod, the stones I laid were just put down on a crushed stone bed and laid without mortar between the joints (there is mortar in the middle of the track but it’s not structural to the outer stones, just there to “look” like loose crushed sandstone) these stones were aprox 1200mm long x 600mm wide x 250mm deep. The road was full designed by a structural engineer to closely resemble my design.
  5. Ignorance is bliss……..
  6. Sometimes I wonder if buildhubbers are just secretly posting random internet images of hatchet jobs just to watch the rest of us go of our nuts….. If it’s the real deal - as I Expect it is - then I agree with all the above but just wanted to add - cowboys - bodge it and scarper- don’t pay !
  7. Never to late to start ! biggest problem I have is dealing with slugs ! keep us informed on your progress.
  8. It’s all been said already…. Get it redone properly.
  9. @Lesley72 I just put in some random vent axia extractor which does the job but is bloody noisy ! Drove the person nuts but it did sort out the problem, I now have the house back and have moved in and will be replacing it with a remote mounted inline fan. Still to decide on model.
  10. Yes I much prefer OSB behind the plaster board as well, it’s an extravagance but I still do it…….
  11. West coast of Scotland for me and Amazon is my go to for so much stuff…. It’s quick, nearly always free delivery and very quick with prime. Delivery charges are always a hindrance when buying non Amazon based products. Hmmm, well I live on an island but fortunately my postcode is registered as the mainland so the suppliers have no idea ? 99% of the stuff gets past on to two local companies who do delivery’s once a week so it’s pretty good. Royal Mail still do daily deliveries do that’s great.
  12. Maybe post some photos so people can get a better understanding of the site, I have this problem with an area of lawn and dug it out and it filled with water and made an instant pond, there are two kids living next to it at 2 and 1 years old so I have drained it until I can re visit the landscaping plan at a later date.
  13. I would definitely say OSB rather than ply and not quite sure about membrane without knowing what you are doing.
  14. Agree that stove design should fit the style of the interior, finding a quality make that has the appeal you want should not be hard. I have had a clearview for 10 years without fault and will be fitting another soon. Endless research and critiquing of reviews is how I buy expensive stuff…..
  15. There are so many views on how to insulate an old building like this…. It’s always the same with one team firmly set in the traditional camp with lime being the key word and the other team at the very far end of the field talking about PIR and Gypsum ! If your stuck in the middle god help you…. Your either going to get converted by one side and hated by the other or both sides are going to kick the shite out of you for sitting on the fence.
  16. Yes…. In another building I have 170mm of rockwool between the roof joists and 70mm if PIR below, seems to work well ! Always put the more breathable insulation to the outside, but on a recent new build I have seen it done back to front…… not sure if this is a good thing. - I am not an expert by a long shot so don’t take my view as gospel….. If you do this you have repetitive cold bridges at every stud and could cause problems with condensation forming on the cold areas.
  17. I have often thought this would be a good solution but don’t know of people who have done it. - I don’t think you need the plastic batten just treated wood in a vented void would be fine.
  18. Option 3 would be my choice but if possible I would have a small amount of ventilation in the void, nothing crazy but some sort of airflow to allow any damp to be removed when the wind was blowing. I am thinking that on my renovation I will use 75mm pir between studs and then 50mm over the studs followed by PB. I have no issues with noise as I live in the sticks.
  19. And me…..
  20. Acoustic guitar ….. I expect Banjo very different, but I am not an expert…….
  21. I prefer the render version….. the rustic look is very different and I can see why it’s causing conflict. Personally I would cut your losses and remove and redo it and agree never to talk about it again……
  22. This is totally right, I spent years jackhammering all sorts of stone and granite really is a show stopper when it comes to hand held equipment, we used to have it blasted in remote locations but if you can get in a big machine then that’s the best option.
  23. Were they velux ? Did you use the insulation kits they provide ? I insulated my own as I went so that I could be sure it was well done.
  24. i spent 4 years drinking water from the roof of my building in Australia with no bad side effects, there were also kids and babies and no problems, totally untreated.
  25. Are you sure you have the right threads on both sides ? i used the same make valves as the fittings without a problem…. if your mixing brands of fittings this may be a problem but not something I came across. i have just checked my coupling between the two particles filters and it’s exactly the same as yours and mine does not leak, so I can only assume you have not got enough PTFE tape….. strange
