Think it was about 4-5 years ago that we had to make our final choice. Either the mcz stove or an ashp. Didn't know a sinner who had an ashp but knew a few who had the mcz stoves. The choice was pretty limited. Either 15kw or 22kw in a few of the mcz range or the much bigger pellet units upwards of 45kw. If I had to make the same choice today would I still go for biomass. Honestly I doubt it because I now know through here and ebuild much more about ashp so could have adapted my system better to suit one. But you have to make decisions along to way of every build based on what you have infront of you at the time so it will do me till it's time is up.

I have a biomass system and it takes a fair bit more work to maintain. It needs cleaned out every 3-5 days depending on how much you use it. It will have some sort of ash tray that will need cleaned out. Every month it gets a proper cleaning which takes maybe 20 mins work. Then you have the storage of the wood chips/pellets. They have to be kept bone dry or it will wreck the auger. The more you order the cheaper you get them but the more room you need to store them. I can fit about 1.5t on a pallet but they are stacked maybe 7ft high. Who is making you choose between the two options?? Is gas not an option or even oil??? Your u value for your openings is high. Most good 2g will be lower than that.

I think they love visiting new builds when they see a someone who has busted a gut to end up with a house on a different level to the usual mass made crap.

As Built SAP
Declan52 replied to Gone West's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
It gets worse when it's done as you are that used to doing things around the house you kind of feel a bit lost for while. Take a well earned break for 6 months and recharge the batteries. -

Don't forget the smaller the mesh the more it will act like a sail when the wind gets up. -
Safety Netting for scaffolds
Declan52 replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Do you have some of the fencing you used to keep the newts out left over?? I have seen everything from netting to chicken wire used. Most of the stuff that falls from a scaffold is kicked over not dropped. It's important that the out side plank is flipped on it's edge so it sits up and gets held in place by the other 5 planks then you have a double hand rail which will catch most things from going over the edge. -
You can get away with less screed depth to give you more insulation. A sand/cement based screed can be 75mm and one of the liquid screeds can be 50mm deep if you got one of them. Both options will help with the heat loss.

Polished Concrete Flooring
Declan52 replied to laurenco's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You can still put in your slab but it leave 75-100 mm lower. Then when your house is done and ready for the finished floor who ever will do your polished concrete floor will come in and work their magic. As has been mentioned above it is definitely not a cheap option.- 13 replies

Think of all the heart felt messages you can put on the display like Clarkson did. It was very impressive even he really liked it. Just the £150k price tag that was a slight issue!!

I was on a sweat big time for a few days logging in and checking on the post office web site where it was. Was glad to see if finally delivered. I also got a similar letter. -

I scanned every page that I filled in plus all the different receipts and then sent it recorded delivery. -
You could put in a steel hook low down so it won't be seen and use a ratchet strap to keep the tower in place. As @Russell griffiths says carpet and planks is the way to go.

Snug passivhaus dwellers?
Declan52 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
True we were drilling boreholes in 2010 when it went to -15 here. Every time we set a drilling rod back on it's rack it froze to the others and had to be hammered apart. We only had 1 hole to do and headed home by 11. Took 2 hrs to drive 18 miles. Was a fun drive home!!! -

All workplaces have to abide by the health and safety rules which include working in low temp. If they don't provide you with a means to stay warm i.e clothing or temp heaters then you can go home. The min temp is only 16 degrees so if your works heating has broke down you are well within your rights to pack up and head home if it's below this. -
I have a 350l and that looks slightly smaller. Mine is 22 inches X 72 inches.

The vast majority of all the mass builders here use them but it's there standard 2g units which are cheap and you get what you pay for.

Yeah they are one and the same company. Munster joinery just trade as baskil in northern Ireland.

You can put additives in the mix like kill Jack but it's better to just wait.
