  1. They cost around £5k and where installed by sun renewables from dromore but I think they have ceased trading.
  2. House is 220sqm and the PV is a 4kw system.
  3. Yeah any that would normally be sold back to the grid is used to heat the water. The device is one of these. https://www.marlec.co.uk/product/solar-iboost/?v=79cba1185463 Last year I got near £480 for the amount I generated plus £65 for the excess I sold back. Not sure how I would calculate the amount it saved me by heating the water. As the tariffs have all changed you would get less though.
  4. I was all set for an ashp but we went to maybe 2-3 of the self build shows in Belfast and spoke to every one there who done them and every single one told you something different. Knowing what I know now about them they where all just winging it to an extent. Withthe rhi scheme dead here there is hardly anyone out there left that does do them. I would put the money towards PV and use an E7 style setup until such times that gas is available. Put all the pipe work in so it just needs a gas boiler put in and connected up when the time comes.Even here we get enough from the PV for my hot water needs for maybe 6 months of the year.
  5. I used to use both of the hand twisters and the drill type when I made up piling cages and to be honest there isn't much in it. The drill type does jam up but it's usually because the wire it's bent so misses the guides where it feeds in and bends.
  6. A proper hard hat will have a date stamped on the inside on when it needs replaced. Sun light supposedly makes the plastic brittle over time. A beanie hat under a hard hat helps to keep it in place but then it gets to warm when you start working. I would just wear the bump hat and be comfortable.
  7. The simple fact is very few would make any money out of it. Most of the jobs that we have attempted have taken maybe 3-4 times longer to finish. Everything from painting and putting skirting on to boarding out all will have taken much longer than someone who had been doing it for years. You could possibly do a project manager/ site foreman type role but after completing just 1 build are you really that experienced to over come any hurdle that might arise. You could gain experience by doing older houses up like people do on TV shows like homes under the hammer but this requires enough capital to buy a house at auction first. But it would be an easier way in than dealing with peoples dreams who are self building as most of them are certifiably nuts.
  8. I can neither confirm nor deny that allegation.
  9. I know a guy who is a bit stuck doing his bathroom up. Has been at it for a while now.
  10. Search for boreholes local to you using this and see what it turns up. That's all the site investigation company will have done. http://www.bgs.ac.uk/data/boreholescans/home.html
  11. Another reason is that having looked at the geological maps of your area they have seen that the ground is very stiff and in order to get to 10m they will need a shell and auger type rig. Bigger rigs means bigger mobilisation costs which could account for the extra costs involved. Where did the 10m depth come from as that's a long way down for just a house Foundation??
  12. If the soil is stiff it won't but then if it's stiff you won't need to go to 10m. But if you have to go to 10m and he can get to 5-7m using the sampling tubes you can probe it till you get to 10m. This will give you an indication of the soil strength but you don't get any soil samples. The probe is just a much thinner rod with a point that gets banged in till you get to the depth you need.
  13. Would it not be just easier to sell the land and use this money for your own. You will have no hassle of building other people's houses which considering your going to be moving next door will be blessing.
  14. The plumber (jury is still out) had set all mine to high to begin with. There was a tiny plastic clip on the unit where the water comes in. I just removed it pushed it down a few clicks and put the clip back in.
  15. I used more or less the same method for my 3.2m concrete heads. Setup a bay in the middle of the opening. Clamped a ledger across in the middle to attach the pulley block to. Used the pulley block and lifted the head up as much as the slack on the chain would allow. Set the head down across 2 planks then moved the pulley block up and repeated till I had the head up. Took maybe 30mins work but was a safe and controlled lift. Just make sure whatever chain/sling is rated for the weight plus all your shackles are in good condition.
  16. If you have some blank round bracing pipe you can use them instead of transoms and some couplers you can make a bay as wide or narrow as you like.
  17. They would need to be some set of coasters as a single lift with 4 standards, 4 tranny's and 4 ledgers would be heavy indeed.
  18. Could you go down the route of noise at night regulations with your local council. Unless what they are doing is an emergency repair to a pipe/cable then why is it not being done during the day.
  19. Welcome aboard. You could do a blog type post detailing the choices you made and why you made them. Might help other people who could be going through a similar process. Pics also help!! Not like we're all really nosey but you know we are a bit. Am sure like everyone else there is a SD card somewhere jammed pack with a collection of photos. Solar PV will definitely help getting that electric bill down. Here in the sun trap that is Northern Ireland my 4kw system covers nearly all my electric bill. Will obviously depend on where you are and what tariff you can avail of.
  20. This is the guy I used. Of hand I think it was only about £50 but that was over 3 years ago. My architect gave me his number and I phoned him up and sent through all my bits and he done his work. http://www.ctlindsayarchitect.com/sap-epc/
  21. As Peter says its all about how you set them up and if the plumber fully understands the limitations of an ashp. You can't run it like you would any other type of boiler they don't work like that.
