House is overheating
SteamyTea replied to Savage87's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I suspect that the outside air temperature is so high that without active cooling you are going to struggle. My house, when there is no heating on, is usually about 3°C higher than the outside temperature during the winter. During the summer is is usually cooler than the outside air (though 24°C would be a treat down here). So I suspect you are getting incidental gains i.e. cooking, washing, entertainment systems and people, plus if your MVHR is not well insulated, that is heating up in the loft. -
Hot tub waste water - where can it go?
SteamyTea replied to readiescards's topic in Waste & Sewerage
I would worry more about Folliculitis more than the waste water. It is very often caused by spa baths. Worse job I ever had was cleaning the DE filter at the Sheffield YMCA. I have no idea what those young men got up to.- 27 replies

Would that have been in one of the coldest winters down here, with a unique weather pattern.- 42 replies

Yes and no. The CoP will drop below 1 while the defrost cycle is happening (and this does depend on where it draws an elevated temperature from), but once it has defrosted it is back to running at a higher CoP. They are designed to do this. I can wreck the fuel consumption, and the maximum speed of my car, just stick it is first gear, floor the accelerator, and watch the unburnt hydrocarbons pour out the exhaust. It does not make my car useless, or incapable of being operated as intended.- 42 replies

That is enough to still be corrupted if the wind blows just slightly from the East.

Yes it is, but they say Cornwall starts at the three rivers. Tamar, Tavy and Torridge.

"Near Holsworthy in Cornwall" @joe90 is your neighbour then. Glad to see you got the cream tea the right way around.

Wax (PCM)
SteamyTea replied to MortarThePoint's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
I wonder about the fire risk with a wall full of lard. I think, assuming that insulation is fitted correctly, airtightness is the important one, even without MVHR. It is also the sort of thing that anyone can do, it is not a skilled job, just a bit of training and understanding why it is important. Off to work now. -

Probably, it was a number I remember for years ago. May be worth calling it 2 times now. I am lead to believe that was why the Sunamp was developed. It is a Scotch product and they have lots of low carbon energy, and domestic heat loads are the biggest in a house (up there, usually). So as a direct replacement for an E7 system, there are not so highly priced and offer some space saving and user benefits. Still way to expensive for a box of candles mind. -

The trouble with batteries is that you have to oversize them. So if you want 1 kWh delivered, you probably have to buy in 3 kWh. This does depend on the load they are expected to deliver, the coulombs, as well as the chemistry and operating conditions. -
ASHP DHW monitoring tank temperature
SteamyTea replied to Far2wired's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
I made one for a Solar Thermal system. Was a bit crude, just a 'relay as a switch' to sense when the pump was on and a couple of 1Wire temperature probes to sense the temperature differences. Then an assumption about the flow rate. Was wired into a Raspberry Pi ZeroW. It worked. -

You have to use the Kelvin scale to get the true difference. To be honest, we should all use the Kelvin scale, for everything. Phase change thermal batteries are not cheap. I think in the order of things it is: PV (if used when generating) Water Storage Battery Storage PCM Storage This is more to do with the scale of production and the usefulness (entropy) -

Bonkers idea or a great idea?

Our chicken ends up on a plate, for between £3.50 and £12. -
Will be interesting to see a years worth of data, nothing much matter this time of year when there is excess, excess. I was surprised how quick my E7 200 lt cylinder settled out, with the bottom being close to the supply temperature and the top pretty stable, even with usage during the day. Posted up the image on other threads of the temperatures.

Have you tried to compare the losses of the battery and water storage?

SSE are not a DNO as far as I know. They are only interested in the billing side really. You should be able to find out who your DNO is with a bit of googling. Ah, seems SSE are the DNO in Scotland,

Is it worth paying £9000 more for better U value
SteamyTea replied to Happy Valley's topic in Windows & Glazing
So if, for easy of calculation, you loose 100kWh extra a year, and energy cost go bonkers to £1/kWh. Then in 30 years you will have saved £6k. -
I have a cheap fitness tracker watch somewhere. That can take a signal from the phone. Can't you make up something like that, a band that vibrates when someone rings your bell, or at least vibrates your ring if you are worried about snagging your strap.
