  1. Are there any of the street work improvement schemes in your local town/village. If so ask them for it. If your closer than the tip they are using they will do it. I got around 10 loads of rubble for mine for free.

  3. I m another for whom the forum died just at the wrong time - just as my timber frames were being erected. So what's happend in the meantime - the frames are now up, my cantilevered stairs in, and most of my roofs insulated and covered (epdm), my windows and doors have been measured, and I ve contracted some Welsh guy to design my hot water system ?. I put the second house on the market hoping to generate some interest ready for when it's complete, and have agreed a sale less than a week later (now it's with solicitors but hoping to exchange/complete this week). Next up is a quiet few weeks whilst windows are made, followed by floor insulation and ufh, and the start of first fixes.

  4. Hello I came across the ebuild forum whilst researching lending and warranties for timber frame timber clad builds. I had already met the MBC guys at a trade show and had them price my frame and slab, so was pleased to hear good reports about them on the forum. I knocked my existing house down in March and MBC started the slab 2 weeks ago just as the other site stopped. With no where to post any longer I set up my own blog at http://www.passivehouseselfbuild.co.uk/ which I will try and keep up to date with progress and my thoughts along the way. I spent the morning today connecting the ufh pipes to pressure test tomorrow for the pour on Tuesday. Exciting times.

  5. First post on this site, in fact a first post on any site ever - no clue about that nor about how to build a house. But 7 months ago we bought a bungalow that probably should be demolished (thermally awful and everything dates from the 1960s) and we are keen to go down the passive route for a new build. So pleased to have found you all and hope to learn alot, share the journey and build a home before our kids want to leave it....

  7. Hello all, as complete newbies, we started our Berkshire build last August after over a year of devouring e-build for advice. We're a fairly standard MBC passive house above ground with a passive basement below which is apparently a first. Now at the plastering stage so plenty of experience under our belt to share and still plenty of advice required! It's good to be back, Mumsnet was not doing it for me.

  8. XPS has a better lambda damp or dry than EPS (doesn't change much for either, TBH). XPS is also a LOT nicer to work with than EPS as it cuts more cleanly. I've used loads of it for lost foam composite moulding, where the clean working is a significant advantage. The only downside is that it is a bit more expensive than EPS and that it tends to have a structural "grain", in that it has a higher compressive strength along the direction of extrusion than at 90 deg to it. Probably not worth worrying about for a foundation. XPS is often slightly more accurately sized than EPS, as it cuts more cleanly when sliced from big block into sheets in the factory.

  10. I'm BACK! Evening all, old and new. Greetings from Kent. I'm originally an apprenticed mechanical & production engineer by trade working in my day job on lifting and access equipment tending towards the electrical / plc side of things. Proud owner of a large, detached money pit, you name it it needs doing or re-doing. Wish I'd found the old eBuild site sooner as I'd have done so much differently and saved a bundle of money to boot. Learnt a hell of a lot and hope to continuing doing so here! And no, I've not finished the BATHROOM yet!

  15. Well I for one very much enjoy your videos. But, as for filming down the front of crevices. You should be slightly ashamed of yourself

  16. I couldn't agree more, Tony. I think the thing that annoys me is ordering a load of 2400 x 1200 sheets, because you want them to fit on 400 centres, only to have the BM deliver 2440 x 1220.................

  21. Welcome Dean and Hannah, I too would be interested in how Graven Hill works out, as we're looking at the possibility of doing something on a much smaller scale as a part of a Neighbourhood Plan. It's early days, and I'm keen to find out if there is a way of making the process simpler and cheaper than the serviced plot with approved design option that seems to be the way Graven Hill have got around what seems to primarily be a VAT issue, as I understand it. Maybe a new thread on that might help, as I know that some other areas are looking doing something similar.
