Why do water butts prevent reduction in charges?
Hecateh replied to Ferdinand's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
Yorkshire Water has a different policy. Only if your rainwater harvesting is used in a way that If you’ve got a rainwater harvesting system fitted at your home and any water used from it eventually finds its way into the public sewer there will be a charge for this. So water butts don't matter - only if you are using the water in the loo or whatever- 12 replies

CRL underwriter declared bankrupt
Hecateh replied to divorcingjack's topic in New House & Structural Warranties
What's worse is that the loan company then accepted my statement that it was in place but no evidence until the end so i needn't have bothered anyway. Another 2.4k down the drain -

Yeah - bank transfer. Only got it because the loan company insisted. They made one visit and haven't seen or heard from them since. -

House Cooling ideas
Hecateh replied to mike2016's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
This time last year no one would have been worrying about this. It would be nice (in some ways) but unusual if we have this problem for a couple more months. In my current house my bedroom is to the north so is generally cooler than the living area - but I like to sleep cold . I like 14 to 16 degrees and use a fan at night frequently. Being just me I can have all the house doors open and windows open on all four aspects. For many people, at night, the issue is getting to sleep not staying asleep (not for me, I wake frequently but when I was younger I didn't) So - very damp flannel in hand; fan on; wipe face, neck and arms (and other areas if required) with wet flannel (doesn't need to be cold). Lie where fan cools your skin, when feeling slightly cold, pull over a sheet or empty quilt cover and go to sleep. Wet flannel stage may need repeating a couple of times if very hot. Used it all the time on kids when I was nursing. Flannel was actually wet with warm water as cold may cause shivering which raises temperature. I know this is about house temp but sleeping is VERY important -

Finally got round to doing the back garden.
Hecateh replied to Declan52's topic in Landscaping, Decking & Patios
That's just the kind of planters I want - unlikely to happen though. I've got a load of old decking that was taken down before the new house was built - I will just have to see what I can do with that. -
Welcome - and this is a great place to start. So many on here, me included, found this site when we hit a problem - and then found out so many other ways in which we wasted time and money on doing things wrong, paying stupid money for work - often to people who are incapable of doing the job they took on and many other reasons. The refrain 'I wish I had found this site sooner' echoes through a lot of posts as does 'Thank goodness I found this site'. You would be welcome to view my little 'folly' but I'm a long way from you.

This is who I used http://www.bore-it.co.uk/ A small family company, very helpful

It kind of makes sense - There are economies of scale if they can plan the whole job from beginning to end. His response suggests that he wants to make it work - but if they are having to work round other people, so may plan to do something on a specific day, and then your other contractor lets you down then that's them left up shit creek. It sounds like you have a good relationship. And that they can do the job that you want. Why not ask him to visit to discuss the bigger issues or even go back and say that you have been advised to get other quotes and it makes sense to do so but, as your preferred supplier, you will discuss with them before ordering elsewhere

It's kind of better if it was very new cos then you can blame a fault. When it's been working well for a time it's natural to think it's safe n

Not actually bought from WREN as they refused to even quote based on plans. 'Let us know when you are in and we will come and quote 'dear'' (They didn't actually say dear it was the tone of voice.) Crossed them straight off my list.

No need to draw attention to the fact that you were a child when I was married ? I was a child bride ?
-
Probably - Way way back in the 70's when I was first married our first house (a late 60's estate semi) had a mock stone fireplace with one of 'those' modern gas fires. The first thing we did was take it down, then covered the rough place where the mock chimney breast had been with cork tiles and a picture mirror lol. ?

Hecateh replied to Hecateh's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Nope - already so far over budget - there is no point in paying an extra £200 to have one wall hung toilet. Advised by architect - and then by builder - could do it all for 100k. Budgeted 25k for contingencies Spend so far £137k -
showers, washbasins, toilets etc.
Hecateh replied to Hecateh's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Had my heart set on wall hung. Cleaner, easier to clean, room looks bigger extra cost does justify to me BUT I haven't got the extra cost SO Back to wall it is
