  1. Terry Pratchett - Wee Free Men anyone? all these are in here
  2. Wow! That is a house I would have loved to build - If I had the sort of money to throw at someone who came with personal recommendations to do everything for me - ready to just walk into at the end
  3. Maybe they should - but they don't and if it is not written down it ain't happening. I have been a recipient of this and have never felt 'shamed' by the people on here. (IN fact I blame myself FAR more than I have been blamed or shamed by anyone on here.) Fact remains I didn't get in writing everything I expected. Ergo I didn't get everything I expected. The builder should have made me aware of it but the twat was no more aware than I was until the money started running out. He not only shafted me' he then wanted to exhort more money as he said he had already done work that wasn't quoted for. (He didn't get it) Buyer beware. AND unlike the banks etc, there is no way anyone is ever going to make any money out of 'miss selling' with sole traders or small limited companies
  4. Oh - and it is not coming from Nigeria or anything like that LOL - totally bona fide
  5. Sounds good - if funds permit I will ask @Ferdinand if his handyman can borrow his spray kit and get it sprayed all white while it's still empty. Just got £1500 tax back - I knew I was owed it but wasn't sure when I would get it, very timely!
  6. Thanks - that's very kind, I may take you up on that
  7. Decorating may have to wait I think. Anything that isn't VAT reclaimable is having to wait until this house is sold and paid for I know I probably won't be in before end of September but without deadlines nothing gets done and things just keep slipping further and further. This house isn't sold yetso I do have a bit of slipway but things have slipped too far already - as they do.
  8. I should have done this last year and then I definitely would have give it ago. I'm still aiming to be in the property by the end of September lol
  9. That's my normal modus operandi - my head is spinning with what I am trying to 'project manage' at the moment lol
  10. Not even that. The first guy that quoted £5,200 was doing that I think. This guy knew I had other quotes. I'd told him that they was a wide variation and that I had totally discounted the £5.2.k as being silly. He seemed genuinely gobsmacked that it could be done in a couple of weeks. Jeez - I think I could do it myself, with help from @Onoff, in 10 weeks.
  11. And all this is in the deprived area of Barnsley - makes you wonder. My plumber asked if I could do books - told her yeah ... £50 an hour. She actually responded - "need to be a plumber to get that flower".
  12. floor 96 sqm, footprint 64 sqm. I had one joker quote me £5200 but others have come in between 2 and half and 3 and a half. God knows what this one will quote - if he bothers now LOL
  13. Nope, we had discussed when he could do it. I told him that someone else had said about 10 days and he said "they must be getting a dozen guys in then and that's pushing it." It's 400sqm, not the Taj Mahal footprint around 64 sqm floor area around 96 sqm
  14. Had someone out to quote today - seemed like a really nice guy - and probably is BUT when I asked him how long it was going to take he told me 8 to 10 weeks. What??????????? How come others have said 1 to 2 weeks. And, apart from the first quote, I've had quotes ranging from 2.5k to 3.6k. Which in no way would pay 2 people for 10 week and yet he seemed genuinely surprised when I told him others had said 5 to 10 days. Is it me? 10 days at 2.5k = 2 people at £125 - which is lowish although probably not equal shares. If that was 10 week it would £125 a week. How could it take that long - that's an average of 3 boards a day. I know there are some awkward bits but there about half that will be just full board onto timber.
  15. Most of us have more questions than answers - and asking is good. The problems for many of us start when we not only don't know the answers ... or even the questions - we don't even realise there is a question to be asked - until we do!! Or we ask the question and don't realise we don't understand the answer - well that's true for me sometimes anyway
  16. Definitely right to sack him. I doubt if it's worth the stress of fighting for the extra money back unfortunately. Lots of stress and no guarantee of success. I wish I'd only lost a couple of hundred!
  17. I think the 'truth' as spoken is very different from 'fact' And the best liars are like Trump because paradoxically however disproven they have no trouble convincing themselves that what they is is true.
  18. Welcome When I moved into this house 18 years ago many people suggested the garden was ideal for new build and I dismissed it out of hand. Through the years people suggested it repeatedly - with ever decreasing objections from me. 8 years ago I decided to look into it and was told by the planners 'No chance'. Put it away for 4 to 5 years. I'm getting older, planning conditions change. Yes it could be done. Currently 80% finished, I'm frequently regretting it. BUT I know I would have regretted it forever if I hadn't done it. More nightmares than dreams at the moment but I have done (nearly) what few people will get chance to do. And I have (nearly) a unique and very special house. Dream on AND enjoy the dreaming - you may or may not get chance to do it so it is very important to enjoy the dreaming
  19. NnnOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo Have you no soul????
  20. Shit collects in corners
  21. @Becky M close enough for me to make a visit next time I'm down - I'll let you know when I'm coming and we'll see if we can arrange something. Close to the end of my build now though so pretty hectic
  22. Love it - would it be possible to put glass at water level, lighting etc above (maybe even wine storage) and then another glass at walk on level.
  23. @Becky M Definitely will - whereabouts are you. My sister is on Knowle Close - it's gorgeous round there isn't it. (She is a lot wealthier than Me lol). PM me rather than putting your specific location on here is prob best
  24. The drawings say half an hour - it isn't 3 storey in height anywhere - is like 2 storey with a mezzanine
