Controlling underfloor heating in passive house

Interested in your heat coil for upstairs. Do you any more details? Is it simply an on/off switched unit or connected to a thermostat? Have you used it in anger? -
Controlling underfloor heating in passive house

Another great thread. One very related question: "Controllers" ............. are the ones supplied with the ASHP generally fine for the scenario's we're discussing here (UFH, Buffers, DHW etc)? Are they all unique to the ASAP (I note Samsung ASHP state you must purchase with their controller)? Or are there "better" generic controllers? -
It was tongue in cheek. We've discussed this a lot on other threads and I agree that they provide a good service. They've clearly made a concerted effort to increase product quality. Some of the "Silverline" tools though are utter pants.

Ah Toolstation. Poundland for the building trade

Very interesting. Looks like I'll have to see one in the flesh. @lizzie do the logs look real? In that video they look a bit "plastic"

What a fab picture. In years to come when she inherits the house I'm sure that picture will become a prize possession. -
I thought you might find the following release from the HBF yesterday interesting: Home buyers would pay more for better health and wellbeing Almost a third of all home owners and renters would be willing to pay more for a home that will not compromise their health and wellbeing according to new research carried out by materials giant Saint-Gobain. The results of the survey of more than 3,000 renters and home owners are revealed in "The UK Home, Health and Wellbeing Report 2016" launched this week. The analysis finds that 90% of respondents are concerned about the impact their homes have on their health and wellbeing. Respondents were asked to select key features of their ideal home, with safety and security coming out on top ahead of running and maintenance costs, low energy bills, a low level of noise, good natural light and no damp or mould. Each of these factors was valued as three times more important than a home that will improve in value or have desirability when sold. "People are becoming more interested and concerned about their health, wellbeing and the positive choices they can make to improve their lives," said Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland regional ceo Mike Chaldecott. "Our homes have a strong impact on our daily lives. The results and conclusions (of this report) will give far greater insight into this area and identify opportunities for those with a role in developing, designing, delivering or managing housing." * The findings of the survey were debated at a Housebuilder magazine/Saint-Gobain round table this week - a full report will appear in the April edition of Housebuilder

It is almost impossible (if not impossible) to get a T&G section out of a floor without cutting it, so you gain almost nothing by not gluing the joints.

We've got a fair number of door thresholds both ground and first floor and I'm soon going to be asked what the intended floor finish is going to be so that we have the correct FFL. My challenge is "the boss" is still a little undecided on floor finish in a couple of rooms. So........... Are there some "standards" for the various finishes? E.g. Tiled, Carpet etc etc. I'm fairly certain the answer is "No" as there are so many variables but thought I'd take the collective view here.

Perfectly normal. Its why we're all here in the first place

Material to Subdivide Warehouse bays
Barney12 replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Just a thought but have you considered the issue of sound proofing beteeen the two units? It might not be an issue for you. When we did the same thing at our unit we ended up with a simple stud wall, filled with rockwool and skinned with OSB, It worked out cheaper than anything else. -
Alas Ecobuild as a show is a 'dead duck' even for the trade. Before it was sold to UBM it had become the go to event but the Goliath that is UBM pretty much destroyed it within a couple of years and lost all their money in the process!! Hopefully the management that have bought it will do what they say and return it to the excellent show it once was. http://www.constructionenquirer.com/2017/02/22/ecobuild-show-sold-for-nominal-sum/

standing seam roof and roof lights

I think the issue is the same will the full fill on the MBC 225mm rafter (which is effectively a plated standard web joist). Its a detail which is not common. I agree with with you that having no ventilation gap "feels" wrong. Being an early adopter (in general UK building terms) is not much fun at times. It brings a lot of indecision from suppliers!! -

Out of interest is your roof make up something like the tech drawing that I've shown below? I'm waiting for Tata to confirm the make up as it seems to be causing some confusion (largely caused by my architect!). Tata's technical guide isnt exactly clear on pitched roof makeup as to whether the ventilation gap is required in all scenarios. I know @JSHarris considered Tata on his MBC build? On the strength of this drawing I've suggested: (from inside) 1. 15mm Plasterboard 2. 22mm Service Cavity Batten 3. Airtight Membrane 4. 225mm Rafter 5. Airtight Membrane 6. 50mm Counter Batten on Rafter 7. 18mm OSB3 Deck 8. Breather Membrane -
I was taught to use pipe cord on BSP threads and I have to say I have never had one leak when using it: https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/adhesives-and-sealants/pipe-sealants/55-pipe-sealing-cord-50mtr/p/LOC7255800A?

+1 on the 22mm chipboard. Glue the joints if you want to make the whole thing bullet proof. Or brush a PVA solution into the joints afterwards. Don't be shy on the screws!

I really shouldn't have started researching rooflight installs. Its another bloody minefield of information and confusion. why do Velux specify such a large opening? This seems incredibly thermally inefficient when you have an insulated roof structure (Such as the one from MBC)? Am I missing something?

Thanks! Managed to find a picture in the end.

Sorry, good spot. Lazy copy and pasting! I've edited the original post.

Looking at the install guide it really doesn't look much and is only I would guess 50mm x 100mm No idea of material, there are scant details of any technical nature.

Hi Guys Just a quick sense check? I'm intending to fit the following windows: VELUX GGL UK04 2066 White Centre Pivot Window Laminated - 134cm x 98cm. Its a triple glazed unit with a quoted U value of 1.0. On the basis that the roof makeup is actually 0.1 then clearly there is a drop in efficiency here. But enough to worry about? I can get better (0.8) but I'll need to compromise on size and the cost rockets. Lastly has anyone fitted the insulating collars supplied by Velux? https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/velux-bdx-uk04-2000-insulation-and-underfelt-collar-134cm-x-98cm.html I cant seem to find any real detail about their make up. TIA!
