that's a very broad brush. \As a parent who has just had a youngster get through his GCSEs and seen the amount of graft and determination required to get a commendable outcome I cannot agree with your viewpoint. Although in NI we're not saddled with the comprehensive system...

Is a crust normal? I've never seen one on ours. -
Slate Verge, Nudura and no Barge Boards
dpmiller replied to WiltshireLink's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
we went with a continuous dry verge. Have a look at Kytun; ours was supplied by LBS, sized to match their tiles. -
Are there big long hold-down straps as well?

put the DW drain hose straight onto a spigot on the branch. The DW is trapped in itself and the vented stack will ensure no gurgling.

What colour to use where on interior face of dormer
dpmiller replied to Queenie's topic in Decorating
with the volumetric & single-angle spectro systems that are used for this kind of paint, matching will always be a bit more "approximate" than the gravimetric systems w/ multi-angle spectros that are used eg in the motor trade. With car colours, spectros trump original formulas now... -
ASHP Issues Leak & Buffer Tank with Loxone Thermostat

2. have you checked the air pressure in the pressure vessel? Might someone have isolated the vessel? A problem here will cause the pressure to fluctuate unexpectedly -
ASHP Unit distance from property?
dpmiller replied to ashthekid's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
ours goes through a phased shutdown, delays to allow the valve to move over, then starts back up; ramping up as the DHW tank heats -
Our guys put a treated 6x1 along the rafter ends and some day I'll clad over them...

Mini Store - Heat Geek / Newark Cylinders for ASHP
dpmiller replied to Nick Laslett's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
not everywhere. Mains gas is still quite a new thing in NI and going from a vented tank/ oil boiler/ Willis combo is a steep learning curve for many... -
what is the manner of the expected light pollution- out over the countryside or reflecting upwards off the hardstanding in front of the glazing? Dark Skies is all about upwards emission AFAIK. might there be some merit to an overhang/ brise soleil in terms of solar gain but also upwards transmission?

don't understand why someone who has done so much of the build wouldn't just hire a van and do a bit of graft?
-
for a given power consumption, lower voltages mean higher currents and so more voltage drop or "transmission losses" along the resistance of the wire.

having spent quite a number of years installing and commissioning fumecupboards and BSCs, the airflow required to achieve containment at even quite a small aperture size is large. Conversely the velocity required to allow good capture within a carbon filter is... very low. eg. a schools portable fumehood requires a sash opening of perhaps only 250x600mm (say) so that a low face velocity of 0.3m/s give reasonable containment and time for the filter to adsorb. Vs a ducted fumecupboard that will be around 1m/s average face velocity to contain within a sash opening of 450x1200mm. That's a lot of air...

does that not create smoke that needs :ahem: extracted?

completion is different to needing to pay rates surely? We're resident and "substantially" complete so LPS want their pound of flesh, but BC aren't interested in visiting until I ring'em and ask for final inspection
