Building into a sloping site. Methods and details.
Gone West replied to Dee J's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You need to consider orientation carefully and it's effects. As Jeremy @JSHarris found digging in could create an unexpected micro-climate which may have a large impact especially with a low energy house.- 21 replies

Mobile signals frustrated by house wall insulation
Gone West replied to Auchlossen's topic in Boffin's Corner
If it's possible to measure signal strength outside and inside the house wouldn't that be enough to see what effect the house construction was having? -
+1 In my case their design was not the best but everything turned when they said it would. It's not the very best of quality but well built and strong.

Very true. That's one part of our build where we were lucky to get good plasterboarders and an excellent plasterer.

Mobile signals frustrated by house wall insulation
Gone West replied to Auchlossen's topic in Boffin's Corner
It's an interesting point where reception is good outside but poor inside. For instance I don't have any problem at all with mobile reception inside my new house. I can also use my cordless landline phone inside the new house from my bungalow next door. Perhaps we should create a list of new house, wall construction type, along with mobile reception. I could start it off with 50mm high density Rockwool and 350mm Icynene and good reception. -
The problem with steel rusting under render is that the steel expands when it corrodes and the render will crack. On my last house someone had fitted a steel bracket in the mortar between bricks. The bracket had broken off and been pointed over and over the years it rusted and pushed the brick out around 1/4".

I bought several rolls from C&A Building Plastics with some polycarbonate sheets. It was very sticky, couldn't get it off once stuck down. It was a few years ago though.

Part 23 - Final Groundworks and Landscaping

Well done, stunning in every respect. -
£25k for an integrated lift might be a bit high. Stiltz quote around £14k which includes all standard site preparation work and all standard installation costs. Don't know exactly what that means though.

It's not only the spacing but also the size of the flange. I have, 122mm flange, metal web joists spanning 5.9m at 400mm centres and there is no deflection at all.

I've never 'lost' any tools from site, but I have gained some and hundreds of nails and screws.

A friend who build her own house used chains which were held in place with rocks over the soil pipe. They work just fine as long as it's not windy.

Hi Tom, welcome to the forum. If it's classed as an agricultural building is it possible to apply for Permitted Development Part Q?

MVHR visible ducting
Gone West replied to graeme m's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Yes it's an Eclisse glass door kit. We bought several from Ironmongery Direct in a sale. Haven't found any problems yet. -
MVHR visible ducting
Gone West replied to graeme m's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
We also have vaulted ceilings upstairs and had room inlets at around 500mm above the floor. We used 204mm x 60mm ducting for that short length. The extracts in the bathrooms were through an extra wide internal wall between the ensuite and bathroom where we used 125mm round ducting. -

Help! Floor being poured tomorrow. Lots of air in UFH loops
Gone West replied to oranjeboom's topic in Underfloor Heating
That's looks odd to me. I've never had concrete I can gouge with a tape measure after a week of hardening. Get him back asap and see what he thinks.- 63 replies

This is not an easy post to write.....
Gone West replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Don't give up Ian. You are certainly capable of doing the work yourself. It will take a bit longer, but just pace yourself. What's the rush, there's always tomorrow.- 62 replies

@RichS I can't find the spec. at the moment but 5mm max. sounds about right.

Under my PH slab I have 250mm type 1 compacted and on top of that 50mm granite fines then the insulation. What you need must surely depend on the ground conditions.
