  1. Hi John, welcome to the forum. Plenty of newbies to self build on here including me.
  2. Yes, Wendy's a real help, couldn't have got this far without her. As complete amateurs I guess things aren't too bad but we are into the seventh year of the build now, and you think you're slow!
  3. Now that's where I struggle on both counts!
  4. I found filming the labour aspect of our foundations a crucial part of our evidence when the foundations had to be replaced.
  5. It certainly did. Well done for stripping it all back and starting again. You would have been worrying about it if you hadn't. It's a stressful time but when you're past this stage it'll be lost in all the other things you'll be doing.
  6. +1 for EverEdge. We're now using EverEdge Halestem Rigid, 150mm for the drive edging and 100mm for the pathways.
  7. It's been there getting on for two and a half years but is looking a bit tatty now. We have replaced one section with galvanized steel and will do the other section later in the year.
  8. Bit early in the morning for me! I'll have to read it more carefully next time.
  9. To check gaps like that I use plastic packers/spacers pushed in. I have a collection of 1mm to 6mm.
  10. On the internet I have a large folder and sub folders containing all the bookmarks of everything I come across that is of interest to the build. On my computer I also have a folder and subfolders containing all the PDFs and other documents relating to the build. My memory is terrible so I use the computer to help.
  11. We had those fitted on our roof. Cut like this at the roof angle, ideally straight cuts. Covered with something like this: https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/marley-modern-plastic-hip-apex-cap-for-36-45-degree-pitch-grey.html More help: https://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/user/u/files/marley-dry-fix-brochure.pdf
  12. Very tidy, looking good.
  13. I'm sorry I can't remember how many drums they used. I do know they under estimated and had to get another one.
  14. I bought three Silverline 150mm flush cut saws six years ago. I bought three because they were only £2 each and I didn't think they would last long. They are still going strong having cut timber and Rockwool batts. I think I was just lucky.
  15. I have metal web joists and used a rigid plastic branch system. It's no problem as long as it's well thought out before fitting.
  16. I had Amtico laid in my bathroom and ensuite. I had glued and screwed, at 100mm centres, 10mm marine ply to the 22mm Caberboard and filled and sanded the screw holes and joints. The fitter still went over it with a compound saying it needed to be perfectly flat to do a good job!
  17. You will need to take account of fire regulations in Part B.
  18. This is a starting point. http://www.ikeahackers.net/2017/05/classy-high-gloss-bespoke-loft-wardrobe-eaves.html
  19. We used grass block put on top of our front garden. It survived lorries and a crane and nothing got stuck. We took it up afterwards and most of it was reusable. We are in East Kent and it is pretty dry here although it was down for a few years.
  20. Hi Russ, welcome to the forum and good luck with the project.
  21. We used Lindab guttering RAL 7037 which was the same RAL as the windows, doors and zinc(Lacomet) work.
  22. I used Ipe but it it was for the decking. For my situation it seemed the best choice. I used this data to assess different timbers. Decking Timber Data.PDF
  23. Sorry to hear about your problems. There's always one thing that goes wrong in a big way, with me it was the foundations, let's just hope everything goes smoothly from now on. You'll be amazed at how these disasters fade into the past as the build progresses.
  24. Only a fool thinks they won't make mistakes. It's learning from them that's the trick!
  25. A starting point. Don't know how prices compare. http://www.postsaver-shop.com/
