Nightmares: a calm analysis
vfrdave replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I can relate to this, I lost 4 block piers that hadn't been backed up because of other failings that the contractor had made (who also took on too much work and didn't really have the time for mine, he is now gone) one evening when we had 40mph gusts. They had stood for 3 weeks prior to this. It made me realise the power of the wind and put into perspective the wind posts for my walls and block on its flat inside skin that the SE specified to account for wind loading. -
This seems an all to common problem. I have got rid of the contractor for my build after multiple errors/issues. On confrontation it was everyone else's fault but his and he accepted no responsibility for anything. He even accused me of checking too much on my own house build! He suggested walking off the job to which I agreed and then he had the cheek to ask to be paid. That was some 8 weeks ago and I am still working out the issues he has left behind.

Balancing MVHR system
vfrdave replied to Stones's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Hi @JamieM did you install the system yourself? -
Some nice roof porn there! I too hadnt heard of the Kytun dry verge but they look like a neat addition to the roof edge. Any idea on the cost? Then I will need to source them in NI.

Does anyone have any contacts or suggestions for purchasing slab oak? I would be looking 3m x 500/600mm x 40/50mm. Looking to get 2 sliding barn doors made for the new build. I am based in NI so transport may be an issue but we will see. I have searched locally but have drawn a blank. Thanks in advance.

My SE specified 8mm diameter bolts at 600 centers staggered either side of web

@dpmiller with regards the consent to discharge do you know what sort of treatment plant you are going to install? Viltra in Newry is one option available. Colm Gribben will handle the consent to discharge for you for a smallish fee and if you end up using Viltra products they knock his fee off the total cost. https://www.viltra.co.uk

To keep this current our solution was in fact determined by the structural engineer and consisted of a concrete pad shuttered and poured in the wall within the subfloor area (not bridging the cavity) to allow for the wind posts to be increased in height.

On holidays and swmbo announces that she fancies a wet room style shower for the en-suite as she likes the one in the hotel. I have read @Nickfromwales detailed post re tanking and formers. Any idea how this would be done on ground floor when I'm intending to use liquid screed for FFL.

Sounds like a sensible option will run it past BC just to check. Thanks

I have 4 wind posts in my new house which were made as requested by contractor, unfortunately this is incorrect and they are too short. What options do I have? Can I get them extended with a welded section on the end or do I need new posts? All ideas welcome. PS said contractor is no longer employed for a number of reasons.

Welcome I'm up in the dromara hills getting blocked laid currently. @dpmiller have you spoken to kudos formerly advanced timber craft regarding timber frame.

Probably better with a router that will accept an onboard 4G sim. Other options maybe worth looking at http://bluebox.network/ depends on availability by line of sight from their broadcast locations. Their customer service may not be the best you will ever experience, they dont like declaring their broadcast site locations. The other option is http://airfibrenet.com/ similar to the above with different coverage and much better to engage with. Both options above are not satellite but WiMax options.

Yes a cname should do the trick assuming you are appending different services on different points to the same fixed up address. For example web services at www.mydomain.com and ftp.mydomain.com these would be your cnames that would point at the mydomain.com A record. Hopefully that's clear enough.

The kitchen is beside the utility, I have attached another picture for clarity. The soil stack in the kitchen is in the horizontal bit of the U island so quite a run to get a fall from the utility. To be fair 3-4m run in the floor would see me get outside below finished floor level but maybe not low enough to hide it within the ground level outside and then I still need to get it to a main sewer run. If only my contractor had put a soil stack in the subfloor as instructed! New Picture (3).bmp

Yes I suspect that we should have had a waste pipe through the subfloor like the bathroom and kitchen, but they didnt do it and didnt like it when I questioned it. Slowly are relationship is becoming more fractured as I question things. Any way out of this now? can an internal gully be placed in the insulation layer as my subfloor has already been poured? Really want to avoid a visible waste pipe on the outside beside the front door.
-
Where should my drainage pipe be located? I have a utility room which will have a washing machine and probably a sink and therefore a waste pipe. The area in were these would be located is not on an external wall, the only external wall area is beside my front door. Builder has told me that washing machines/waste etc come out above the sub floor and into a gully but this doesnt seem right with me as I definitely dont want a waste pipe tracking down the curved section of wall beside my front door. Should this have been treated the same way as the bathroom/utility room wastes and piped through the subfloor? Thanks in advance. New Picture (2).bmp New Picture (1).bmp

Folks hopefully you can help me out here I am a good bit off rendering but trying to make decisions. I am seeing more and more houses rendered down to ground level in what looks like a continuous pass, I assume bridging over the dpc, is this correct? There doesn't appear to be any stop beads or bellcast beads which are usually pretty obvious. Can this be done and does this not cause issues with damp, reading on the internet I get more and more confused.

If @DeeJunFan delays by about 4 months (ever the optimist I am) you could swing up through co. down and do mine also!!

Are there any structural engineers on here that I could get an opinion from?
-
welcome to the forum I sympathise with you regarding design issues. I am battling through a design by the structural engineer for a block on the flat internal wall which brickies are not liking the prospect of. Look forward to some blog posts, I havent managed that yet with my foundations poured 2 weeks ago.
