Combi microwave oven? gimmick?
Simplysimon replied to Trillip's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
that's one thing i really like about the air fryer, it's quick, cooks a small chicken in 40 mins -
personally if i'm paying for a footprint i want the same floorspace on all floor, i've no interest in paying over the odds trying to impress others and therefore have no need of wow factors. when we bought our plot the design had two mezzanines and four beds, we've now got four beds and no mezzanines. house next door, same footprint has 5 beds and two mezzanines, go figure the room sizes. they also have floor to ridge 2g glazing in two of the gables and steel colums sitting on the foundations. we have 350mm blown cellulose walls and roof with 200mm recticel under a 100mm floor slab and 3g windows and doors.

Combi microwave oven? gimmick?
Simplysimon replied to Trillip's topic in Kitchen & Household Appliances
got a sharp jet convection with double grill, second one as first wore out, wonderful for pizza and baked potato. oven doesn't get used as much other than pizza as we also have an air fryer which isn't that good for pizza. -

seems to be a helluva steep roof? so top two course are laid in direction of fall, i certainly wouldn't want to disturb them in case they decide to slide. what about running a quick cut parallel to the edge of soakers and carefully fitting lead into that? may not look too odd as both roofs at differing angles

yes, but i would put a wide piece where the one horizontal on the page first and screw it to the one vertical on the page then fix diagonally into studs -
1930s Bungalow part-reno / loft / extension in Twickenham!
Simplysimon replied to -crashd's topic in Introduce Yourself
the house 10 doors down seems to have a nice extension to the rear but may be out of your budget, lift the floor dig out insulate and ufh an option? -
did that in first rented flat half a lifetime ago, put it across the full window to stop draughts, don't know how good it was for heat retention but it stopped the draughts which was a winner. i'd do both, insulate at night and through the days in at least one when cold. i suppose that will be most of the time up there.

brick bond on the walls every time, just looks wrong when straight. how about 30deg angle on the floor to be different? 😉

Timber frame vs ICF vs Traditional masonry for a new build
Simplysimon replied to Indy's topic in General Construction Issues
most of our ground is clay, however, where the house sits there is an outcrop of whin not far under the surface. bc wanted us to dig it out to replace it with concrete until we had a discussion and made them see sense. strip founds and beam and block here. -
you may need to specify you don't want a meter. if you have one fitted they will apply a standing charge

dpm, dpc and a well fitted and sealed vcl - negligible chance 300mm+ i beams exceedingly good sound performance see above, 350mm i beam with blown cellulose = 0.1 well put an expensive rain screen around it then, you are already ???? i'm not, it you lot griping about how difficult it is to fit insulation to an inner leaf blockwork wall and considering eps blown beads and hoping your price work brickie isn't leaving snotters to bridge the cavity, i'm putting foward a build method to mitigate these issues. along with the lake district and wales, scotland does have its fair share of rain, usually driven on a strong breeze as has been shown over the last week or so ?
-
why oh why do you still build with a block inner leaf instead of a timber kit down there? move into the 20th century folks, heaven forbid, you could actually move into the 21st century with i beam kits......... ?
