I’m in the process of building my ICF basement walls and looking at the manufacturers video it shows that the services can be placed into ducts cut And foamed into the ICF. What’s not clear is whether I can simply plaster directly onto the ICF. What have others done?

You can beat having a digger, mine’s a 2.8 Tonne Volvo. Having one on site has saved my thousands in hire costs.

This morning I started settling out the ICF basement walls. Lots of double checking setting out dimensions and making sure the blocks are level.

If wondered about using an outdoor ground coil as the heat dump. You could simply pump the UFH water out and around the ground coil and it would loose heat to the ground outside.

Theyve quoted that I need 2 of the UniQ eDual 12 units at a total cost of £7,250. This is to provide ufh heating and hot water in a four bed house with three bathrooms and a kitchen, occupied by two people. They’ve also included their calculations which I need to double check against my heat loss calculations.

The architect detail has the water bar glued and nailed in place down the centre of the joint. I can’t get a scabbler in due to the bars, I might try a needle gun.

I’d say you’re missing a rainwater connection top left of the plan. For the utilities, I’d take the shortest path around the house. Where’s the meters going? Some utility companies want them facing the road or at the side, but accessible, so no gates.

I don’t have a power washer so I’ve removed th surface dusty layer using an angle grinder and a cup wire brush, I’m now on my second angle grinder and third cup wire brush. Below you can see the difference where I’ve cleaned off the concrete dusty layer.

I’m about to start building my ICF all off my freshly cast concrete raft, then someone said have you power washed the joint face? Really, this is news to me!! Thoughts!

No doubt you’ll be getting a procession of ‘officials’ coming to visit, I’d keep a site diary and record your daily doings. I’d Also record time and date of every official visit and make each ‘official’ aware of previous ‘offcials’ visits and your concerns about the neighbour. All this won’t make any difference, but at least if it becomes a trend the officials can take this into account.

I’ve walked on a good number of tin roofs and they do bend and dent if your not careful. -

Does self building improve health?
Triassic replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I’m physically fitter doing this self Build. In the last four weeks I’ve taken delivery of the insulation and the ICF block, this has involved me walking up and down the drive, a round trip of 200m, 170 time’s carrying the stuff. Im doing the labouring as it saves me money. As others have said getting quotes that are realistic can be a challlenge. Mentally I’m a fairly chilled sort of guy, nothing gets me down, mind you, everything takes longer than you think and this can be a problem for others around you, my wife is always pointing out that “you said x would take four weeks, it’s taken you six weeks”. The finances can be a challenge, stuff is expensive and you do need to shop around. On the plus side my wife has just been made redundant after 32 years at the same firm, so she get a reasonable redundancy packeage and I get an extra pair of hands! The aim now is the complete the build on or below budget and be mortgage free with a bit left over. -
Why use 16mm rather than 15mm? if you use 15mm you can use any left overs for other water supply jobs. 16mm just adds to the plastic waste problem!
