  1. After such a long wet period finally some sunshine, but what’s this, my conservatory is full of flies!!,! And I mean many hundreds. There is a slight design flaw in that where the sloping roof fits the timber there is a tapered gap that flies can get into. I meant to fill this with foam strip but forgot last year. It would appear the flies have “hibernated” in this gap and come out into the warm. There are no flies outside to indicate they are coming in from out there. answers on a post card to........
  2. that makes me feel better, not as thick as I feel sometimes.
  3. mines not like that, the controller requires a degree in techno speak (which I failed) so my ASHP delivers at 48’ whether to UFH (blended down by the manifold) or the DHW tank.. I have never noticed the ASHP defrost (an indication youre COP will be lower).
  4. Wot he said. I have a buffer tank fir the UFH, some don’t. @ProDave and I heat DHW to 48’ which we find very adequate but may mean a larger DHW tank as you won’t blend it down to use. I have a couple of immersions in the buffer tank and DHW tank fir back up or to top up the DHW if necessary. no such thing as silly questions, we have all been there so ask away.
  5. if you do this, lots less work and mess and the existing “mass.” Will reduce noise transference.
  6. hence the reason I gave up with this thread.!
  7. Frankly @DavidHughes if you don’t want MVHR then don’t have it, mine cost relatively little to instal, unit from Ebay, self made manifold, terminals, silencer. DIY instal so the costs were minimal. Regarding benefits my air quality is very good and consistent so in my opinion well worth the costs and effort, if (and I am not likely to at my age) I did another new build it would be on my “must have “list.?
  8. Just had a shower, MVHR came on boost automatically to reduce RH and it will go off automatically when it gets back to normal. No trickle vents to create cold draughts, what’s not to like. edit to add, like Jeremy I have found clothes dry quite quickly with no condensation and I banned a tumble drier in our new build.
  9. My “professional” design had loads of pipes in doorways and I changed it to run some pipes through walls in a conduit, it also shortened some pipe runs, I don’t like the idea of many pipes close together in a high traffic area.
  10. if that’s the case you have no idea the breadth of knowledge and information @Jeremy Harris brings to this forum, he is very good at discussing facts without getting personal.
  11. yup, see my post above.
  12. As yet another (retired builder) who has encountered planning officers who don’t appear to have a clue, after 4 planning applications and an appeal to the Secretary of State (which we won hands down) we got what the vast majority who live near us wanted and what we wanted. The Secretary of State even told the LPA they were not abiding by their own policies. I did employ a planning consultant for the fourth planning application and frankly I could have done better myself. I did the appeal myself (smug emoji). Our builder informed us if we lived a couple of miles south, we would have come under a different authority and got planning first time round. I have also been dealing with different LPA,s in different areas and found NO consistency whatsoever.
  13. No idea but I am of the school of “never a lender or borrower be”.
  14. I have one but it came with the range cooker and is part of the “cottage” look, I do use the light in it but rarely the fans. It is a recirculating one with carbon filters but the MVHR does most of the work anyway.
  15. Us men have a very responsible position, if anything goes wrong, we are responsible ?
  16. Yes, In a previous life I had a small holding and breed geese and other things, I love geese and may even get some fir here (when I have finished my 1001 other jobs ?)
  17. Actually I think geese are more noisy than a dog and many people won’t go near them.
  18. Many years ago I built a “poachers trap” which consisted of a trip wire and a shotgun cartridge (empty of shot) as were were aware of people entering our small holding during the night, unfortunately the only person I caught was my wife who forgot about the trip wire when feeding her horses first thing in the morning?her ears were ringing fir days?.
  19. I have not installed any alarm in my new build, there is a dummy box on my workshop with a flashy light. All windows and doors are very well locked with the latest protection. (I got a certificate to show it’s class of protection).
  20. I am lucky to be already drawing my private pension and I love staying at home pottering with a 1001 jobs, my wife works in social services but I am urging her to work from home as much as possible (otherwise I will have to stick her in the caravan on the drive ?).
  21. Mine is only audible when on boost in those rooms nearest the unit.
  22. I agree with all above and whilst planning our MVHR asked if it was possible to have it running only when the air was stale but this is more trouble than it’s worth. For “boost” I have a humidity stat mounted in the exhaust manifold, I can set the RH level at which it comes on (Bath, shower, cooking) and when the level gets back to a set normal it simply switches off. For the very small amount it costs to run it might as well stay on, but you could always switch it off during fine weather. Just had a thought, if you switched off (by having a switch to the trickle setting) it would still come on fir boost if you wanted it too. (I might do this myself).
  23. my builder and I erred on the side of caution by putting it in a location accessible and any gas escape thro damage would not build up under the house.
  24. Don’t fight gravity, let it help you!?
  25. no substitute fir getting “it right”.
