  1. My builder, despite being “well able”, gets a company in to liquid pour screed, he told me the labour and materials were not worth the faff, cheaper in the long run and guaranteed dead flat. confusius, he say “work smarter, not harder!
  2. yes as long as it looks “right”.
  3. Jeremy famously said “90% completed, only 90% left to do” ?‍♂️. Plus what are you going to fill your time with when you have finished?. I think the answer depends on the questioner. 1/ friendly neighbour with a sense oh humour = “cheeky bugger, it is finished. 2/ persons unknown = “how long is a piece of string?”.
  4. Ah sorry. Why steel? Do you mean along the house wall to rest the beams on?
  5. Cost of retaining wall vs cost of beam and block ? Amount of work building retaining wall, filling with stone vs amount of work for beam and block? You pays your money and takes your choice.
  6. When I was working I used to have three saws in the van, newest was for proper woodwork (me only) second was for anyone else on site to borrow or me to cut old stuff, third was knackered fir plasterboard only. When the “best one” was a little blunt I bought a new one and they all moved down the scale and I threw out the oldest ?. (I hate blunt tools). ( I never lent out my wood chisels either).
  7. Nah! Just do it, councils are too busy to notice and if the contractor looks “pro” who is going to question it . ?
  8. Pissup in a Brewery springs to mind ?
  9. Also you would need a step at every joint ( I believe) ?
  10. yes that is what I used to do with those odd bits that go wrong, makes the corners more stable!
  11. yes, that might lead to unstable corners beads ?, @nod will be along in a mo with his thoughts!!!!
  12. Only two applications, you had it easy, we had four ?, seriously, we had a similar experience, the committee was “got at” (so I am told) and the appeal officer (who granted our appeal to the original application) told them they were not abiding by their own policies. Yes we get so many passers by commenting on how nice our build is ?
  13. Is it still the case of no VAT on propane?
  14. rubbish, we have a range cooker and 19kg bottles, no flow problems at all!!,!
  15. I run my range hob on 19kg bottles and they last forever ( I just can’t remember when I last had bottles delivered). Just been to look and one is empty ready fir changeover and the other nearly full!!,? I do have a spare (left over from the caravan days) so will wait till two need changing before arranging full ones.
  16. If I remember correctly it was his Mother, despite him telling her he did not need it and she should make sure she used it to be “comfortable” in her final years.
  17. That diagram (grey area) extends 300mm above cylinder only. As @ProDave says, ask him to recite the regs to which he is referring!
  18. When I fitted my windows the cill was brick which protruded into the cavity a little, I simply (with the help of the builder for the large ones) lifted them onto this lip and propped it there whilst “jiggling” left and right to be central. It worked very well.
  19. when I was a child I remember my father and grandfather arguing about politics (on which they always disagreed!) and my older brother joined in and spouted stuff I knew he didn’t believe. After it was all over I asked my brother what had changed his mind and he told me he had not, but added he was playing devils advocate to stimulate conversation ?.
  20. Didn’t know that, what else (apart from water) does it emit? is it not the mining of precious metals by poor people around the world a big concern as well?
  21. Gosh that’s expensive for a plastic water tank ?
  22. ha, take a couple of days to sort that little Space out, I have an Acre of “paddy field”, just had 40 tons of top soil delivered to be distributed about, will take me all summer I reckon (when the ground is dry enough to walk on ?).
  23. If it drains to a ditch that does not “flow” does it not wiff a bit???
  24. I watched one of those programmes that converted an old classic to EV (which is a crime!) and the conversion was £30k ?
