  1. If the taping is continuous and goes from sheet to sheet it will act as a VCL (vapour control layer ) and airtight layer all in one at this point and would not need another. Some people like to add in a layer of polythene as a vcl just to be 100% sure. adding another layer of inundated plasterboard does not act as a vcl ( I think) but will stand corrected if need be
  2. I take it all back….. it looks fantastic! Well done
  3. There is a LOT of stuff going on here and it’s going to be a messy thread if lots of people start answering multiple questions, it may be better to start again and ask a single question at a time and then move onto the next question…… and try and ask the questions in the right topic area. Hopefully this will entice people to provide some helpful answers. I will try to come back and chip in something useful soon.
  4. Not going to be a lot of space in there after you insulate the floor and ceiling and put final coverings on……..
  5. You need to buy an expandable foam gun and gun grade expandable foam. make sure that all the insulation is flush with the face of the wood, check with a long straight edge over a few at a time as it will make a BIG difference to how well the 25mm stuff goes on.. are you having a service void ? Either way I would be filling ALL gaps with foam, cut it back and silver foil tape over all joints before starting the over boarding. if you use 100mm tape it should bridge right the timber - it will stick to timber but better to foil faced boards. there are numerous threads on how to do this… you should read them before starting the detailing.
  6. That’s not far away in regards to a length of buried water pipe. Sound terrible... just connect to the water connection 120m away and install a proper sink and tap. These look very cheap and not very cheerful Why not connect to the tap 120m away and then you have endless water ? as @TonyT says do you have power on site - do you need to legally provide hot water for hand washing? using stored water should be a last resort. I think you will need a much bigger tank than the ones you are looking at. are you even allowed to install a septic tank or does it have to be sewage treatment plant ?
  7. Ha, I am in a similar position with two ageing parents and wondering what building I will have to convert when one of them drops of the perch and I need to adopt the other !
  8. Welcome to the group, wow it sounds like your very organised and have all your ducks lined up. Great idea to build a luxury garage to live in first as it saves money on buying a dodgy caravan! I’m sure someone will be along to help you on your technical issue.
  9. From what I remember the slower the air is circulated the better the heat recovery also oversized means the fans can go slower and create less noise. Undersized units will have to work harder and potentially generate more fan noise. I cant be sure about these facts but maybe a starting point of the thread is me getting corrected!
  10. I liked the initial idea of using these as a retaining wall but after seeing what you have done I am not sure it’s justified using such heavy duty materials..... you could have purchase some standard creosote fence post that will last for 30+ years driven them in and attached a top and bottom rail and then attached your panels, would have been quicker, easier and cheaper (or maybe not as I have not done the sums ? ) if you had taken the whole fence line back a meter or two they would have been a great solution. If your happy with he result then that’s all that matters. I have some areas that need retaining and will keep my eye out for a job lot of these as I think they would be great at retaining a slope.
  11. Second that @Big Jimbo change is inevitable don’t fight it but go with it.
  12. This has been talked about before and without making something bespoke there seems to be little available on the market that represents quality / accuracy at an affordable price.
  13. I don’t know enough about it but as you say it will all be to late if you go forward with the project and then find it’s a dud...... I would be looking at returning it and going with a reputable brand name.... I have just fitted two Mira non slip shower trays and both were fantastic quality.
  14. Fortunately I got a pallet load of cement that was out of date pre lockdown - now before anyone starts shouting about out if date cement - I pretty much only use out of date cement as I get it for free though I expect those days are over.... I have never found it a problem - have not seen any degrading compared to in date cement- and it’s free ! A month ago I turned down a full pallet of out of date plaster..... and a full pallet of lime.......
  15. I have the top one. I installed it in the same location you talk about but my situation was different, shite house no insulation at all and mould forming on the hallway walls as well as other rooms, After instaling this it definitely stopped the mould on the hallway walls but did little to help in other areas - can’t expect miracles. It’s virtually silent and the air is diffused by the cover over the inlet pipe. I really don’t see how these can be effective as a way of ventilation in a new house as they pump cold air into the house in the hall and in theory as the pressure rises that cold air escapes through gaps in the building therefore giving you an air change system.... in reality I think the air escaping just takes the easiest route and pretty much bypasses everywhere else. I am just in the process of insulating the house and will see how it performs then but it would NOT be my go to solution for ventilation on a new build.
  16. That’s the bit where you either love them or hate them, it’s just part of the package of owning a Land Rover. I have two, one of them is just used as a non MOT off public road vehicle and despite its terrible condition it just keeps going, if you applied the same amount of neglect to any other car they would just NOT work but Land rovers are so chunky that they are very forgiving when it comes to neglecting repairs and maintenance.......
  17. This thread makes grim reading for potential self builders on a budget never mind those who are a little better off.
  18. I used this company for my kit James Rolland Sales Director (Commercial/Trade) https://www.gmautoflow.co.uk/ They were helpful and the kit was top quality and reasonably priced. I have no connection at all beyond being a happy customer! I already had a good idea of what I needed as council had already done a survey so it was just a matter of asking them to provide me with the equipment that would satisfy the council’s requirements.
  19. No the results were really very good, it’s a deep water spring that comes out at the top of a hill !
  20. This would be my first line of investigation mdpe pipe is not expensive - how far away - a small digger will dig an awful lot of trench in one day. I treat my own spring water with particle filters at 10 micron and then 5 micron and then UV it’s a very cheep instal as my water quality is so good already it’s more belt and braces as I rent out accommodation and it’s a requirement from council. There are grants of about £800 per household from council.
  21. this is what I do and am fortunate to have hillsides of good shale to excavate as required. I did this area last year and it extends 50m to the right (out of photo) where the road goes, all the materials were won from where the digger is and the small cutting to the right of it. took me about 5 days with a dumper and digger but it’s super solid and only cost me the £400 in hire fees plus the fuel and my time.
  22. I have not read this thread so excuse me if I have this wrong - rushing out of door - I would not use pine ply anywhere as it really attracts mould in my experience - got to go.....
  23. thats my take on it as well, so glad I stockpiled a few years ago.....
  24. exactly the same experience about 5 years ago, really nice old guy who was very helpful. Did he give you a reason for turning up ? In my case he was instructed by council to do the survey as something had been brought to there attention that had raised a “red flag” anyway he came did the survey and everybody was happy so that was that.
  25. Don’t underestimate the cost of building a structure from scratch- especially if you are going to dismantle it at the end, I can’t see you building something for less than 7-10k and your return on it at the end will be zero and probably cost you a bit just getting rid of it...... I would go down the static route and add on a lean to to house work ware, washing machine etc.
