Roof insulation. Internal,external
Cpd replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I believe that the less permeable the insulation should be on the inside. So ridged insulation on the inside and rockwool up above. -

Building in a Specially Protected Area (Scotland)

Thank GOD I am not...... its a fully unprotected swamp........ just don’t tell the powers at be how much wildlife habitat I have created....its amazing, the increase in flora and fauna you get when you get the sheep off the ground, fence it in and plant thousand of trees and flowers. Six years from barren farmland to a flourishing oasis and I am only just getting started. -
It’s not on discount but so far my research has led me to this stick welder..... not rushing to buy one as funds are tight and my landrover needs a full brake overhaul...... but it’s on my “next” tool purchase list after a bit more research.

The Build - Getting there
Cpd commented on Redoctober's blog entry in Our Journey North of the Border
Phew ! I thought it was an expansion gap but was shocked at how obvious it was ! Great to see you have a plan to hide them. It really does look great ! What sort of guttering are you going for ? I recently got some plastic “fake cast iron “ and a blind man on a galloping horse would not be able to tell it was not the real thing ..... in all fairness it’s actually quite good and a hell of a lot cheaper than cast..... but...... -

The Build - Getting there
Cpd commented on Redoctober's blog entry in Our Journey North of the Border
As always it looks fantastic and super clean but what on earth is that big dividing line in the front stonework! . Please don’t take offence I am sure there is a rational explanation (expansion gap) but as a guy who has worked stone most of his life I am a little shocked ! Maybe I need to read earlier bogs to find out what’s going on. As i said it all looks amazing but I am baffled by that joint.. the family are away and I had a very very rare glass of wine so maybe it’s me overreacting on alcohol. -
I demolished your house, but I'm not moving the debris!

Same here, it’s my preferred choice. It’s not for everyone that’s for sure and I don’t push it but for me I love being resourceful and tracking down second hand kit and materials. I have been in both camps, once I ran a company that made a lot of money and I had less time to do the whole up-cycling, but that money enabled me to buy my place for cash. I now have VERY little money but I have an amazing property and am really enjoying the challenges of doing things well on a very small budget. Yes it’s taking an age....but I love the journey so it’s all good.- 192 replies

Kids.... off topic but..... we don’t have a TV..... our kids were round at a friends farm house, all the other kids were watching the Tv my ones trooped in looked at it for a few seconds and trooped back outside where I was talking to the farmer. “What’s on TV I asked ?” ‘Bull shit dad” and off they went........ I love that my 3 year old knows how to use a bit of quality language in the right context.

Nice work, looking real solid. Yup if your not in the procrastination camp you better get on and get super organised! Good luck and keep the pics coming.

Treated timber such as dimensional 6x2 etc are treated but I WOULD not recomend using these outside without further treatment. The reason I say this is because I get given all the old wood from the builders yard that’s fallen of the back of the stacks or is dirty / damaged. The stuff that’s been lying for a few years definatly does start to rot ! I have primed and painted this timber and it’s been fine but an extra treatment of quality preservative would go along way to extending its life I think. If the wood is not going to get wet then I think it will be fine.

Wall Tiles ....... Have been playing with a bit of tiling round my fire and thought I could do a bit in one of the bathrooms at some point..... so was looking online for any opportunistic tiles that might be available locally...... hay presto ! Got rather more than I need....... 720 brand new still in the boxes British ceramic wall tiles..... all totally free from a loving home. Crazy what one can get if they look. What I’m going to do with the 700 I don’t need is beyond me...... I tracked them down on line, the ones I got were a slightly pink granite effect as shown in second photo.

The wood is already treated C16 I expect. It’s dry so Just ignore it and carry on would be my suggestion.

Dedication ! After recutting every slate by hand for my roof I said “never again.....” would you do it again ? The flint work that is.

If they had the cheek to take away all the stuff worth something and leave the shite I would be pretty pissed. Without a written contract of what was agreed you don’t have a leg to stand on. Sounds like “poor planning” = “poor results” no disrespect intended. If you read the blogs and threads it’s one of the BIG issues. Everything needs to be agreed, priced and written down before works are undertaken.- 192 replies

Genius mate. I have a never ending supply of pallets and they get used for all sort, I don’t have a pallet buster only pry bars.... if it all works out then maybe you could post the plans / dimensions so that people can print it of and go build there own. I know I would like to have a go. Great excuse to buy the welder I have been eying off.......

I have absolutely no interest in this device as I have great water straight out of the ground...... however I am really enjoying following this debate, it’s great that Polly has put herself in the firing line to stand by the product she promotes and i love how some of our keen buildhubbers are questioning the company’s claims. It’s all being kept fairly formal and non personal and I think it’s a great debate and offers a good insight into how consumers can see behind the glossy sales pitch. I am curious as to how this thread will end and I don’t care either way..... either it will 1. be proved categorically that this device does what it claims. (Polly gets a badge) 2. Proved that it does not. (Buildhub investigators get a badge) 3. We will all get tired of non definitive answers and go back to watching funny cat videos...... Right back to work ! Bravo !

Welcome on board ! And greeting from the West coast of Scotland. Your better of having a long time to learn by all our mistakes than make them yourself..... this site is just a huge wealth of information and knowledge and one can learn so very much by reading the blogs and threads, become informed before you even start and be one step ahead of the game before it even begins !

Seen this done on a property down south, worked really well.... just need to consider condensation? And the ability to clean the underside of the glass and get to the lights.
