  1. Started a bit of cladding on the posh shed, despite the rain.
  2. +1 for above, and parts are easy to get if you need some.
  3. Just twist them all together, and chuck em in the trench.
  4. Great to have good tennants, and to look after them. I like the idea that they can buy the place off you when then can afford it.

  7. I know Peter. I would love to build mine out of i beams. To be honest, i just worry about re-sale, non standard construction etc.. It's funny, building control have always said to me, you don't see i beams used on domestic extensions. But they all like the fact that i had used them.

  12. Hope you get on with the neighbour for when your soil pipe blocks, and you have to go next door with the Dyno rod man. Still could, and should have been done when the house was split.
  13. So you have no manhole in your garden ? No way to maintain the sewer on your property ? I'd be digging a hole and fitting one. That's the problem with splitting a house and not doing it properly.
  14. Say you have got 5 houses in a row, and a soil pipe that runs across your 5 gardens. I believe that the main run, as described above will be the responsibility of the water comp. This i believe was introduced by legislation to prevent Mr Smith who is on the end of the run, (last house) always being the one who ends up having to pay Dyno Rod, because the soil pipe is blocked, but the other four say that there soil pipes are ok. (Because it has not backed up to them yet, and might be coming out of a manhole in Mrs Smiths garden) However, each house will have a trunk off this main pipe, to take the soil from the house to the main pipe. You want to join onto your pipe for a new bog etc, you crack on.
  15. There is a lot of work in the painting, hence the hike in price. If you rip apart an old house, say pre 70's, the windows are usually primed in the good old fashoned Pink primer on all edges, not just where you see. I would'nt fit wooden windows unless they were fully primed on all surfaces prior to fitting.
  16. I did a similar thing on a workshop. just laid the battens down on the concrete, (which did include a dpm) and used 18mm t n g on top screwed to the battens. Nice warm floor, and my fee were never cold.
  17. I personally would'nt use anything that i cant get at again, unless it was solweld. Flexi pipe would be a no for me.

  19. Just read that thread, and i am none the wiser. From what i have seen, even if joint gaps are left, they end up getting filled with basecoat before the mesh is put on. One of the reasons i asked is that i saw that effect of a house at BRE in Watford. The one in the thread looks very bad. I feel for them. Imagine trying to sell the house with it looking like that. Just as bad is the fact that nobody seems to understand what has caused the problem. The gaps specified for brick outer on a timber frame are quite large, so the timber must move a lot.

  21. I'm easily confused so forgive me. If you are building a timber frame property, with an external brick skin, i believe you have to account for the timber frame settling. Ie; brickwork gap to soffit, window head and sills etc. So say you build a timber frame, and instead of putting on a brick skin, you slap on some renderboard, and K-rend etc. If timber frame settles, why don't all the render boards buckle etc.... Just a thought.
  22. Joe90. Go straight to jail. Do not pass go, and do not collect £200. I once used structural calcs for a steel beam from one job for another. BC fella didn't even take them off me, just said he wanted to know i had some !
  23. I like the above ProDave. we should build on stilts, or pillars more often. I get all the thermal stuff etc, but having a home that is isolated from the ground appeals to me.
  24. That is a micky take. Put a match to it. All it's fit for. I was offered a garden room that cost 25k a few years ago. They wanted 10k. They ended up paying £2k to have it ripped down, and carted away. I had to laugh, as i had offered to take it down, and get rid for free previously.
