  1. It is a pain Russell. I am part P, and 16th edition (now at 18th) but i never joined any of the niceic's etc. I have explained in the past to the BCO who has been happy to accept a test and cert from an up to date sparks, (without confirming the install). But there are some who won't. They are, or were supposed to offer that service themselves, but i have never come accross a council who does. If you have a good read up, and try and get your head around what is required, You might be able to find a single one man band sparky who will be happy to work with you, and cert your work. If however, he gets a hint that you don't know what you are doing, he will refuse to cert at the end. I am lucky, i have a good guy that will cert my work, but they are hard to find. To be honest, i'm not sure that if i could cert, i would be happy to cert work i had not seen or done myself.
  2. Michael foot (Labour) once had a decorator i knew stick leaves from his garden onto the walls of his downstairs loo. No idea what he did with the coat though.
  3. My daughter lives in a semi detached cottage. She has had a problem with her ground floor lights tripping for a while. I ran an insulation test and got some nasty results. I took down her 6 lights, and ran tests on each section of the wireing. I found that the leg from the dining room to the bathroom was the problem, and i was able to pull a new leg through. The wire had been chewed by a mouse, through the outer, and inner insulation. She has concrete ground floor, with no gaps around the perimeter, and so i think they are coming through between any gaps at ceiling joist level from next door. I had to cut a hole in the ceiling to get the new wire through, and i did shout up the hole to any mice, that they should desist from chewing the wires. I have taped over the hole in the ceiling, ready for a new bit of plasterboard and skim, however, before i repair it shall i put some poison up there ? I would normally prefer to live trap, but just not pratical. If i do, and she ends up with a few dead mice in the ceiling void, will they stink the place out ?
  4. Welcome, great looking building. Enjoy the ride.

    We have a leak

Hope you find it with the Saturday test. Fingers crossed for you.
  6. Well although i'm dead posh. Born in Hampstead. I am entitled to an Irish Passport due to my ancestry. So you could have a good point.?
  7. Bit more done. Starting to look like a mobile home rather than a posh shed.
  8. No problem, and the doubled up joists should be bolted together at 600mm centres
  9. Good job for sorting it.?
  10. Rafters should be doubled up either side of the roof window. That looks a bit rubbish to me.
  11. i personally would not trust glued down insulation. i got to a site one morning to see loads of it all over the place. The cloth surface had been let behind...Mech fix for me, all day long.
  12. Cork is a fantastic product, but hideously expensive.
  13. I don't see why not. I know some piling companies that won't touch unless they do the lot, and some that are only interested in doing the piles. I see no reason why with the use of a lazer level you can't do atleast the ground reduction. Most tree roots, are in the top meter of ground. If you have to reduce the site by 600mm how are you going to protect the roots ? Don't say hand dig.
  14. Be careful, re venting at the ridge, or not as the case may be. I can't remember the technical, but something to do with the pitch, and the lenght of the rafter. It is not just as simple as saying, "I have gable ends, and vents at the front and the back" I recently designed some trusses, and the engineer said if the pitch was 1 degree higher, i would have to vent the ridge.... So in my opinion, i would either vent the ridge, or have it checked. You do not want a soggy roof.
  15. Yes i do roll it. Don't use too much glue, and wipe up any that squezes through with a damp cloth. (Have a cloth in a bucket of water.) I usually lay 3 rows at a time. I will cut, and dry lay the three rows, mark the edge with a pencil, lift the boards back towards you as a stack. Lay down the glue, using the pencil line as a guide. Picking the boards from the top of the stack, lay, roll, and wipe. The last one i did was 60sq meters including 4 door ways, and it took me 2.5 days. Have fun. Re the glue. Don't use too much. The first time i layed it, i did, and it slides around like a pig, and takes forever to dry.
  16. You are right Carrerahill. I have laid tons of Karndean over the years, and never had a problem. Post some pics when you are done, so we can all admire.
  17. Or some fluffy stuff, which will be easier to fit. Anything, except leaving them empty. Nice job on cutting in the PIR. You are not as green, as you like to make out.
  18. My gut says 65 to 70 K. Although plenty of good builders i know would be happy to be charging as per your quote.
  19. I bet it will look great. Post some pics when it is up. I will prob get some comments from some other members for my next comment, but it's a bit like houses. Most of the houses that get built are $hite. We should be building houses, that are as efficient as they can be. Should have a large proportion of the materials used to be easily re-cycled at end of life, and after 60 years we should be pulling them down. My headstrong daughter is about to buy an estate house built in the early 90's. Anybody on here going to tell me that it will be a great house ???? In my opinion built in 1990......Should be pulled down now.
  20. Welcome, where are you based ?
  21. James Hardie. Sooooo much cheaper than Cedral, and comes with a 10 year paint G/tee unlike Cedral.
  22. Nah, just winged it. So far no cladding waste.
  23. Not raining, so a bit more cladding done. Pleased with the contrast between the cladding and the doors and windows.
  24. Exactly, and i got to chat up his French, Model, stunning girlfriend. My biggest dick up was another Arsenal player, who when i was leaving, after a 3 week job, asked me if i played golf. I said no, and he said to help myself to a set of clubs from the garage.(He had about 10 brand new sets). I thanked him, but said i would give it a miss. When i got in the van with my 16 year old summer helper, he said, what's wrong with you, the cheapest set of clubs in there is £3k.....Doh
  25. That has come up well Bitpipe. The One in the video above, still looks a bit naff when he has finished.
