In the past i have supported soil pipes below BandB floors on a bit of leanmix concrete every 2 meters, with shingle under the remaining. Not saying that's right, but i've never had a problem.
-
I know that's not cheap, but i have used them in the past, and in my opinion, there are a quality piece of kit.

Most expensive trade, you’ve had.
Big Jimbo replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Back in the good old days i made 8k in One day. I supplied and fitted 3 marble fireplaces in One day. To be fair, i charged 12k, supply and fit, and the nearest quote to me was 14k. The other good one was 1 hours work, in the house of an Arsenal football player. I think i charged him £1200. -

Well, that did'nt cost £12.50 did it.

Let the piling begin

Nice to get started. I always thought that you could not use crushed Tarmac (tailing) on a new build, because it was considered to be a contaminated material ? -

I would say steep, but it is a fair while since i employed a roofer. -

That looks like a low threshold. It will be screwed up from underneath into each jamb.
-
Or you could cut it with a junior hacksaw. ?
-
Put a nut on before you cut it, you tart.

Nice gaff. You know you are dealing with a posh bugger when they have stainless vent outlets.
-
The motor oil, helps to get the MDF started. It's a bugger to try and light on it's own.

Grade II Listed cottage with leaky wall

I like the idea of your tar soaked rope. On a logical basis, the bricks won't move, but seasonally, the timber will, so you will always get cracks between the two. -
External electric and gas meter boxes in single skin walls
Big Jimbo replied to Moonshine's topic in Electrics - Other
I think the reason for external only, is because they have by law ( i believe) responsibility for the supply up to the meter, so they don't want it burried under your house. In parts of London a few years ago they came along, and moved all the gas meters to outside the house. As far as i know, in England, you have not been able to have a gas meter internally for years -
Also, once you are under the floor, and, or, above the ceiling, i would go from 40mm to 50mm then into the 110mm. You will prob be ok with short runs, but i would still go to 50mm

As above, or use unistrut. Dont forget you need a fall.

Bit more cladding done. Doors and windows arrive Monday. One of these days, I'll stick the rubber down.

What would you do about this?
Big Jimbo replied to recoveringbuilder's topic in Building Regulations
I would rather have 3 turns, or whatever it takes, than look at the back of that. Perhaps if you were to paint the underside in white, or to match the wall colour, it would help to make it less in your face. -
I have permission to extend my current property to six times it's current size. I may go back in to planning to knock and build (smaller house) I have a posh shed currently under construction. Can i live in this while i am either extending my house, or building a new one ? I will be the builder, and the eventual occupier, when the house is finished. Do i need to get planning permission.

As Ferdinand said they are ways around it. Whole house sprinkler systems must have come down a lot in price ? I think you now have to have them in all new properties in Wales i believe.

Zoot the Hoot. Dont trust the squares marked on the boards would be my first tip. Wear a mask, my second, and a first fix hand saw will cut it for you. Not a large area, so won't take long.

As some of you may remember, i got permission to extend my bungalow in the Green belt from about 500sq ft to 3000sq ft. I then went back into planning to see if i could get Two instead of the One large. That was refused by L.A. and refused on appeal. The permission i obtained took away my class E permitted devl rights. I spoketo the planning officer re a "posh shed" and he said build it before i started work, and i would not need to apply. This is what i have done, and what you are starting to see in the pictures. Now, i have decided that my extended house when built, will be too big (I added it up the other day, and the internal floor area is about 3200sq ft. ) I have decided that i am going to go back into planning for a knock and build with a smaller house of about 2500 ish sq ft. What i am not sure of is. If i apply to replace existing house, will this cover me for the demolish part ? I don't want to have to apply for that on it's own. The second thing is under the same application can i apply to live on site during construction. Ie; either in a caravan, static, or my man shed ? and do i have to state which ? Thanks for your help as usual.
