It's not the upstands alone Tony. The whole roof will have to be done with the contact adhesive. (The waterbased one can only be used in summer) The contact type adhesive is One go. Get a bubble and it will be staying.

I have done One GRP roof. Never again. It is messy and hard work. If you want GRP use a professional. I have done about 20 EPDM roofs including lots of roof lights. Don't be fooled by the video above. The weather will prop now require you to use the solvent based adhesive. That is very hard work. The newish rubber systems, i will be exploring for any future flat roofing. P.S. My oldest EPDM roof is about 12 years. None of my EPDM roofs have ever leaked.

GRP (God-awful Rubbish Period)

Good for you. Tell him he has missed the firing pieces that provide the fall to the roof, so he will need to rip off his badly done grp roof, and the rest of it, back to the timbers so that the firings can be fitted......... -

Yeah, Roof structure going on. All you need now are the firing pieces on top of those timbers to provide the fall for water run off !!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

My wife has the exact same barrow. It cost £80 !!!!! It's a girlie barrow for light gardening, not for building work..... -
GRP (God-awful Rubbish Period)

Your roof should have a fall. 1:80 To explain, for every 80cm of travel, it should drop (be lower ) by 1cm. Your roof has no fall. I would make him rip it off and start again, or sling his butt off site. people keep going on about boats lasting forever etc. Now, i am not a boat builder, but i have built 1 grp boat. I started with a mold, and i laid in a couloured gel coat. This was followed by atleast 5 layers of matting. So overall the hull was about 7mm thick. That is not how grp roofs are done. They have no comparison with boats. Your roof might be ply, or osb. They have gone over the joins in the wood with One layer of 100mm wide matting. They have then laid matting (ONE LAYER) over the whole roof. They have then put on a top coat over that (no matting) This give it the colour. IT IS NOTHING LIKE A BLOODY BOAT. Get the crap builder to rip off the whole sodding roof, and start again. Unless he said to you up front "Here is your quote mate. It's very cheap. It will a lot cheaper than any other quotes you get, because i am a bit of a bodger. Don't complain if it don't look like Buck Palace" That is One large roof. Get it done right, or you will regret it forever. If you put your house on the market, and i came to see it. I would be telling you to knock 30k off the price, because i am going to have to rip that crap roof off......... And, forget about boats. -

I do agree Jo90. Grp done very well can look fantastic. However, i have not seen it done well very often. That roof has not been done by a pro. It's been done by a chancer, and badly. I have a pal, Jimmy the lead. He don't do tiling, Grp, Epdm. All he does is lead, and it shows. There is not a chance i would put up with work like that. This is not one of the gang on here, trying to do the best they can to save a few bob. Canalside is paying for this crap. -

I know others are a fan of the old GRP. I could not live with that. I would be having that whole roof ripped off. I have built atleast 20 flat roofs, and i have never built One Flat, for the reason that, regardless of what you cover it with, it will look like yours. I am not saying that it won't be ok, but it looks dreadful. What do your drawings say ? have your drawings asked for a flat roof, or do they show a fall, constructed by perhaps firing pieces. If your drawings ask for a flat roof, then that is what you have got. If your drawings ask for a flat roof will falls, i would make him rip the whole lot off. -

Permitted development confusion 200mm setback loft
Big Jimbo replied to Emmerski's topic in Lofts, Dormers & Loft Conversions
I generally means that you can build your dormer off the wall below. The soffit and facia of the existing building will normally give you the 200mm you need. I would do you a simple drawing, but i am utter rubbish on computers. What you can't do is join the dormer onto the wall below and have it all as one flat face. -
Yes Steve, to prevent water penetrating the bricks.

Looking great Pocster. Dont use white after all that hard work fella.

Water pipe depth - urgent!

Wow. could they not have got them any closer. That is real world, rather than the paper drawing. -
I loved the smell of those old shops years ago, where you could drop in your chisels and saws, and get them back like new.

I think the first thing i would do would be to remove all of the slabs, leaving the epdm exposed. The second thing i would do would be to coat all of the brickwork inside the balcony area with a good couple of coats of Thompsons Water Seal. The above Two things would give me a good idea of if the rain water is bouncing off the slabs, and making the brickwork above very wet. I would have the coping stones removed, and have dpm run under them from the inner face to just more than halfway across the outside brick. I would have the copings re-laid but where they meet the wall, i would have lead saddles, rather than mastic. Providing that solved it, next years i would have some of that fancy plastic decking put down on plastic bearers. Sorry, but i just don't like those slabs. Hope you get it sorted. I would defo be doing some experimenting before i started having it ripped off. especially with winter coming along any day.

8 weeks to give you a not validated. Council officers all sitting at home watching TV and not actually bothering to do any work ? Got to be one of the best jobs. "Work for the council, you can be crap, but we still won't sack you"

Perfectionism, finishing quality and builders
Big Jimbo replied to ReX's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
The thing is Peter Starck that If you and Wendy did it yourself, You get a sense of pride, and even if it is not perfect (not saying the work you did was not ) it can be done to a standard that you are happy with. I think Pocster is a professional. A total professional B. S.er.??? -
Water pipe depth - urgent!
Big Jimbo replied to Dreadnaught's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Agree with the above. I punctured a yellow gas pipe, 250mm below surface. Transco came out and fixed it, then sent me a bill. I sent the bill back and said that the pipe should have been deeper. Never heard from them again. So in that house, it is still 250mm below the surface.
