  1. as already said ,you have to go with what your SE advises ,as he will have the insurance if he is proved wrong later I would comment that when making a basement in dubious ground most Icf systems go for a wall at twice as thick as the one standing on it above ground with drains etc and that will be with no extra load from another building very close your plan shows same dimensions as above ground ,which has no side loading on it at all . I,m certainly no expert in any way -- but that just looks wrong
  2. even cheaper https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Willis-Jacket-Complete-External-Immersion-Heater-Prewired-fully-assembled-/202416631247
  3. Yes i got one of them, had it for years for another job -- could be used in new house and then see if i really need an ashp ,assuming by that time battry storage has dropped in price -loads of space fro solar pv
  4. or use that endless cable tie material with the plastic penny washer loose end plates which slide on and lock , or cut bottom section to to be a tight push fit between beams
  5. that seems just the solution for a problem i expect to have on my build --due to exsisting house being built on bed rock no space for insulated founds without jacking up whole build ,which then would mean raising all exterior ground level or ramps will examine that option closely
  6. on the same subject of temporary residence is there a time limit -
  7. highly unlikely the extra cost of making another framework that is adjustable would ever pay back the extra cost but ground mounted could be different as you already have to make some sort of mounting anyway. If you look at commercial solar farms --i think you answer to this question is there not worth the extra complications
  8. really you want the angle the same as your latitude with solar thermal for summer, and even steeper for winter due to low angle of sun --hanging vertical almost 54was my best summer angle
  9. hey --don,t joke about that --just back fromn dumfries hospital ,visiting my older brother bonfire on staurday night and few beers and stood funny on a wee log ,went over broke his ankle in 3 places pins through it --waitng for swelling to go down then plates abd screws ,if no other problems he is 72 --so not going to be quick mending
  10. we had to use them as a divider in our workshop -up to 8ft with butress --then metal stud wall up to roof absolute back breaker to work with blocks on the flat would be easier in hindsight
  11. you can come and quarry your own in my quarry if you like .lol
  12. why they so small --plot prices?
  13. 4 x7 =28 ? 6 x8 =48 got a plan of it for interest sounds about right sizre for a holiday chalet
  14. drill a couple of hole from outside inthe wall recess and use expanding builders foam ? patching will never mtahch the coulur of what you have now and as @ProDave say it never wotks tap outside of render with small hammer -in various places --if it sounds hollow ,then it is not stuck to wall
  15. so it has a foot print less than 6m x5m-? my living room is that size --and its not a big house
  16. isit not the same fitting as the std "toby key"looks vaguely like it https://www.toolstation.com/multi-purpose-stop-tap-key/p30620
  17. never seen one of those looks good
  18. cut hole in base of sink unit so you can get at it easily from inside the cupboard ?
  19. or rental from 20 illegal immigrants for housing.LOL
  20. any body done the costs calc on using thermalite type blocks against std blocks for a load bearing internal wall contemplating easiest way to rebuild this granite monster maybe leave outside wall and just build another house inside walls are 700mm+ thick -- so rooms would need up small if i dont, remove the interior rubble wall and replace with something thinner and which will give the insulation yes i know pull it down and rebuild it all -- just seems a shame to disturb perfect solid wall so cost of doing a thin joint mortar block wall using thermalite type blocks verus std 100mm block + of course tieing the 2 together
  21. my suggestion is when you lay your concrete base -put bog pipe in there just under surface _and any other service pentrations (service ducts )- block up-and cover with thin concrete --then easy to open up later, even if you don,t connect to drains at this time --easy to dig soil later work out your drops now
  22. that will be the trigger its then no longer a garden shed
  23. you can see them -so just brush them off
  24. its manchester for nairobi , no wood boring bettles in uk and wood worm don,t like osb just dust them off -it will be fine bear in mind OSB is not thick enough to make shelves that will have weight on them, unless you going to have brackets every 12" needs to be 1"thick plank or blockboard
  25. ssshhh --we are quite happy that most tourists coming to scotalnd just keep on going up the motorway past glasgow ,before they even think they are in scotland a very much forgotten and beautiful area --it si changing --but not as quick as i thought it would when i came here 40 years ago now its beginning to move and plots /house prices are moving up ,even in this terrible climate . yes there have been english folk that moved up 20 years ago -- panicked and sold to move back across the border with INDREF ,expecting prices to slump and less are running away now has brexit came along .,as many new ones coming in
